A highlight of Vancouver Island’s festival year — chefs from some of the finest restaurants on the West Coast are working together to raise public awareness of local sustainability issues and support for locally produced food.

Island Chefs Food Fest focuses on personal experience. In addition to sampling some tastes of the Island, guests will also learn about growing more of their own food, composting, the ethical harvest of seafood, the work of food-related special interest groups and farmers’ markets. We’re a family-friendly event with great kid focused food activities too!

Food Fest is a great time, but principally it’s a fundraiser to help local farmers and processors grow our local food system. We hope guests will keep this in mind when attending the event. The event isn’t meant to be an all-you-can-eat buffet — exhibitors donate their food and time — its a way to try new things and connect with the chefs, farmers, and advocates working hard to defend island sustainability.

Thanks!

The event is being held at the Port Moody City Hall Galleria on Saturday, May 26th, 2012 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. Each season this event grows larger and we are pleased to be featuring over thirty-five of the best BC wineries at this upcoming tasting.

This season one lucky guest will win a VIP package including dinner for two before the tasting at Onyx Steakhouse & Lounge in Port Moody, two entry tickets to the wine tasting, a gift set of four professional Riedel wine tasting glasses to use at the event and take home, and a prize bag courtesy of our sponsors.

Local BC wine expert, John Gerum, remarks, “Legislation will likely be passed to permit BC wineries to sell wines to other provinces in Canada. This will be a great opportunity for BC to gain exposure across the country, however may reduce the number of quality wines available to consumers in BC. Come out for the Best of BC Wines Uncorked and enjoy an evening sampling new spring wine releases before the legislation is passed and other provinces in Canada are able to purchase BC wine. Not only will people be able to discover their favourites but they’ll be able stock their cellars before they are sold out. We look forward to seeing you there!”

Top B.C. Wineries

Support the local BC economy while sampling tantalizing wines from over 35 local and Okanagan wineries. The wineries will be tasting over 125 types of vintages, including some new releases!

Now, the EAT! Vancouver Food + Cooking Festival on June 1-3 is jumping on the pop-up bandwagon by presenting the Pop-Up Culinary Centre in conjunction with long-time EAT! exhibitor, Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (PICA).

This isn’t your typical quiche or cookie baking home economics class. Nine different classes – teaching hands-on fundamental cooking techniques like deboning, knife skills, shellfish shucking, and pastry plating – will be taught by PICA’s internationally-trained Chef Instructors under the leadership of Executive Chef Julian Bond.

“Each hands-on class provides a unique bird’s eye view into the foundation skills taught in our professional culinary programs,” says Chef Bond. “No matter your skill level, we’ll jump start your culinary prowess.” Chef Bond recently became the inaugural recipient of the Mentorship Award at the 23rd annual Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards.

The full schedule of classes can be found on EAT! Vancouver’s website at www.eat-vancouver.com.

Attendees can sign up in advance on EAT! Vancouver’s website for $25+HST per session. Classes are limited to 16 people each.

Speaker Line-Up

Ethan Adeland (@EthanAdeland)

Whether it’s through his blog, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, he shares his honest adventures with the world around him. The stories usually involve being in the kitchen, behind his camera (or iPhone), traveling and simply living in both the online and offline world. In April 2012, he was also named one of the top food bloggers in Canada by the National Post. Ethan also takes the idea of community-building to heart and in 2011, he co-founded the Food Bloggers of Canada with two other Canadian food bloggers. Most recipe books and restaurant foods are not vegan and too oily and high in fat and many modifications are needed to tweak things in the right direction. She decided enough was enough of modifying and altering existing recipes, and started writing down and photographing her own to share on her blog, LowFatVeganChef.com, and writes her own recipe ebooks now.

Ian has been the Director of Marketing at HealthCastle.com since 2007. He is also an avid photographer. More important now than ever in online publishing is to engage readers and leverage their viral power. Ian will show you how HealthCastle.com reach new readers and increase engagement with current ones by using food photographs.

No stranger to technology or business, Ian successfully started his web development company in 1996 and began managing websites and e-commerce initiatives for small businesses in between classes during graduate school. In addition to small businesses, Ian has worked for clients such as the Canadian Federal Government. Ian earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the University of British Columbia.

This event is hosted by HealthCastle.com - the largest online nutrition network run by Registered Dietitians. Contact @HealthCastleGlo if you have any questions.

This will be the location of the second Chef in Residence, by Butter on the Endive on Saturday, May 26th & Sunday, May 27th. Chef Owen Lightly is also very excited to be collaborating with Tonio Creanza, of Creanza Olive Oil from Puglia, Italy. As part of the dinners, Amanda Michas (of Blue Owl Antiques) and Mr. Creanza will host an olive oil tasting in the Blue Owl shop before guests move upstairs to a plated, 4-course intimate dinner prepared by Owen and the collaborating chef.

We are thrilled to have Amanda Michas, owner of Blue Owl Antiques, be not only our lovely host, but also curator of the space. She will curate a small collection for the dining environment, all of which will be available for sale. Luis Valdizon will be gracing both upstairs and downstairs with his artistic eye, photographing the magic.

Throughout the days of May 26th and 27th, we invite friends, community, and Blue Owl community to come up to the residence, hang out and meet the BOTE staff and see what they are up to. Chef in Residence is a happening that plays on ‘artist in residence’ – it is a curated series that provides an opportunity to work with community, offer a salon-style space in which to share creative ideas or to simply enjoy casual company. Each night will offer an Italian inspired 4-course meal – a natural choice since we are featuring Tonio’s beautiful olive oil from Puglia. You can RSVP and buy tickets via PayPal below. Each dinner is a minimum donation of $65 (not including gratuity) and requires a ticket. Check out of the menus below.

Saturday, May 26th

Collaborator: Adam Chandler of BETA 5 Chocolates

This could be the beginning of a brotherhood: Butter on the Endive was lucky to have Chef Chandler be a collaborator at the first Chef in Residence, and they are back collaborating again since it inspired such a beautiful creative process. There were simply too many ideas to fit into one menu! As you read this, they are working on honing their ideas into a four-course meal, and we will post the resulting menu ASAP, so that you can plan your wine pairings. The first seating will be at 5:00pm and the later seating will be at 8:30pm.

Collaborator: James Town of Mikuni Wild Harvest

Many in the local food community know James Town as the passionate sales rep for Mikuni Wild Harvest, but many do no know that before that he was a chef in Vancouver for 15 years. Butter on the Endive has cherished our relationship with him since we first started up and are excited to plan a unique Italian inspired meal using many of Mikuni’s fabulous porducts.
