On Friday, October 7 from 5pm-6:30 pm at Marquis Wine Cellar, several members of Les Dames d’Escoffier will be pouring free samples of Dames White and Red all paired with cheese and charcuterie. Dame Mireille Sauve will be on hand to discuss the wines AND update us on the new rose she is currently fermenting AND Dame Jennifer Schell’s latest cookbook, The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine and Cheese Maker, By The Sea, will be available with a generous $10 going to women’s scholarship funds. It’s not too early to start your Christmas/Holiday shopping!

About Dame Wines

Sommelier Mireille Sauvé capitalized on a local abundance of female talent and, leading a group of BC’s most wine-savvy women, recently launched the province’s newest wines; Dames White 2015 and Dames Red 2013, with 100% of the profit going to fund women’s education in the fields of food and drink. The wines have now hit the shelves in BC’s top private liquor stores and are featured on restaurant lists throughout the province so that consumers province-wide can #drinkforacause!

Sauvé reached out to established women within the industry to source the grapes for the Dames Wine and is using #girlpower right through to the sales channels. Industry pioneer Anne Sperling of Sperling Vineyards runs the vineyard where many of the grapes were sourced, Katie Holmes of Summerhill Winery and Janice Meyer Stevens from Meyer Family Vineyards and tolled alongside Sauvé from the cellar to the bottling line and Kirsten Munro heads up sales in the Okanagan, and these are just a few of the fine women involved in the project.

The 2015 Dames White is a dry, aromatic blend of 80% Pinot Blanc, 10% Riesling and 10% Gewurztraminer. Light-bodied with a lively acidity, it pairs best with shellfish and seafood, especially California Rolls. The 2013 Dames Red is an organic blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Syrah and is a luscious, fruit-forward wine, with flavours of plum and toasty vanilla that complement good cheeses and meats. Both wines are made exclusively from Okanagan Valley fruit and were produced at Meyer Family Vineyards as a custom crush, with Mireille Sauvé as Winemaker.

These wines celebrate the work that women are doing in the province’s wine industry, while providing funds for education for those rising up in the ranks. Sauvé herself was a scholarship recipient through the Les Dames d’Escoffier program where the funds will be channelled, and credits the contribution for allowing her to complete her dream of becoming a Sommelier – in fact Canada’s youngest female Sommelier – graduating from George Brown College in 1997.

520 cases of wine (6,240 bottles) were produced and are selling fast; the wines retail for $25 per bottle, exclusive of taxes, on www.dameswine.com and in private liquor stores and restaurants across BC (prices vary – click here for current list).

Nourish Your Inner Brit For The Royal Visit

The Royals Are Coming – Celebrate Regally

Pinkies up people, the time has come for some afternoon tea, perhaps some fish n’ chips or a proper sausage roll, in honour of the royal couple, and their visit to town. Prince William and Kate will be in town on Sunday, September 25, 2016 and we’d love to know where they are staying, and exactly what they are doing, but alas it’s as top secret as 007. There are, however, some British-themed activities you could choose to partake in this weekend to nourish your inner Brit.

Tea at The Wedgewood

This is a must for anyone who enjoys a good afternoon tea, the sandwiches and service are top notch and the scones have been baked with all the butter in the pantry. Go for the Royal Afternoon Tea and add a Kir Royal. Menu. So good I’m having my birthday here this year.

The London Hotel

The Loden Hotel is so into the visit that they’ve re-branded themselves as The London Hotel for the duration of the stay.  Out front, a red carpet will welcome hotel guests and for the duration of Will and Kate’s visit, there shall be Elevenses in the lobby. The British flag will be draped from the lobby walls, and guests are invited to pose for a Royal selfie with a life-sized cutout of Will and Kate. I’m getting a sneak peak so will advise shortly.

Each day during the Royal visit, from 11am to 2pm, polite conversation will be made about the weather and pinky fingers will be extended over hot cups of TWG Tea and proper British biscuits. When it comes to bedtime, knackered guests can embrace their inner Brit by requesting a London turndown service, which includes a room with a touch of British décor, a souvenir Brown Betty teapot, British TWG Tea and English sweets.

Home to the original homemade Mad Brit Sausages, Home on The Range Organics at 235 East Broadway, just east of Main, is throwing a British Bash with sausage samples, specials on Mad-Brit Sausage Rolls, bone broth samples and many other treats fit for royalty. Owners Allen and Jackie Ingram, native Brits themselves, expect the Royals may stop in at some point if they get a bit of homesickness, and suggest they, and you, bring in the kids. The Boat Show at the Creek Brings Previously Owned, New Boats and Floating Homes to Mosquito Creek Marina

Growing up in Kelowna, boating was almost a daily activity in the summer. Vancouver moorage is a bit more pricey, but when it comes to enjoying the outdoors, there is no better way to do so than on the West Coast. Boating has recently made it’s way back into popularity with people of all ages and backgrounds looking for some adventure.

In it’s 10th year, the Boat Show at Mosquito Creek Marina is Vancouver’s premiere floating boat show. The show is an excellent way for those who are in the market for a new or previously owned boat or yacht to have a look at various models, check out what’s new and get some sound advice from the experts.

In addition to attracting boaters, curious ‘floaters’ who want to own and sometimes downsize to waterfront living come through: the marina is home to the Spirit Trail Ocean Village, a small community of floating homes. Feast of Fields 22nd Annual – Sept. 11th

I won’t be missing this one this year, last year I was away and had severe fomo.  From 1-5 pm at Laurica Farm in Aldergrove wander through the farm and chat with farmers, chefs, winemakers and artisans. Live music, lots of BC wine and beer and gourmet creations from BC top chefs.

Feast of Fields is FarmFolk CityFolk’s largest annual fundraiser. Funds raised from these events support FarmFolk CityFolk’s work to cultivate a local, sustainable food system in British Columbia.  Tickets

Chefs’ Table Society of BC’s Slow Fish Dinner – September 18

The evening starts with PICA culinary student-prepared canapés, and libations including BC wines. Next, attendees move through the school’s eight professional teaching kitchens to meet the visiting chefs, who will each offer a tasting-sized portion of local sustainable seafood delicacies paired with wines from Salmon Safe wineries: Culimina Family Estate Winery, Haywire Winery, Inniskillin, Jackson-Triggs Okanagan Estate, Kalala Organic Estate Winery, Sage Hills Winery, Seven Stones Winery, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards with more to come! The event will end with gelato from Bella Gelateria.

The event is presented by The Chefs’ Table Society of BC, whose mandate is to support sustainable food production and BC producers. Leading the event is Chefs’ Table Society chef Darren Clay, executive culinary chef instructor at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. Chefs’ Table Society Brings Chef Collaboration to Yaletown – September 13

Restaurant and Food Truck Chefs come together
On September 13, the Chefs’ Table Society of BC, in partnership with the Yaletown BIAand the Streetfood Vancouver Society host the inaugural event Chef Meets Truck in Yaletown at the intersection of Hamilton and Nelson. The event will run from 6:30pm-9:30pm and consists of Vancouver restaurant chefs hopping on board local Food Trucks to serve up the foodie event of the season. This collaborative event brings Vancouver’s hottest restaurant and food truck chefs together for the first time ever.
Tickets include food samples from the eight participating food trucks, as well as, wine and beer samples from Nichol Vineyard, Lock and Worth Winery and Brassneck Brewery.
A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Chef Curtis Luk at Edible Canada

Chef Curtis Luk Cooks Up Chinese Feast at Edible Canada.

If you’ve eaten at Fable, Bambudda or Mission (in the running for the top new restaurant in Canada btw), you’ve likely sampled Chef Curtis Luk’s culinary creativity. We love Mission for the drinks and the tasting menus and are lucky to have it in handily in our neighbourhood.  On September 19th you can catch Chef Luk cooking up a Chinese Feast at Edible Canada.

Chef Luk was Born in Hong Kong and raised in Toronto, and discovered his love for cooking while studying at the University of Waterloo.  After graduating, he decided to make his ambitions a reality and entered head-first into the restaurant industry by washing dishes at some of top restaurants in town.

Following jobs at acclaimed Canadian restaurants such as George in Toronto and Atelier in Ottawa, Curtis fulfilled a long-time goal and competed on Top Chef Canada, where he met Chef Trevor Bird.  Drawn by the potential of ingredients on the west coast, Curtis helped Trevor open Fable Restaurant in Kitsilano after the show aired.

Mission Kits

After Fable, Curtis went on to head the kitchens of The Parker and Bambudda before realizing his idea of a west coast-focused restaurant that specializes in seasonally changing tasting menus, where he now resides as chef and business partner with sommelier Chase MacLeod. The stunning space at Mission Kits fits in with his vision perfectly!

What’s Good This Week in and Around Vancouver

We are well into July, which means into the second half of the year! Time is flying by this summer. Last week’s Deighton Cup was a grand success and this week we are heading to a White Caps Game, Vancouver Theatresports newest show, Firecracker, checking out the newest hot spot in town, Fable on Broadway, and starting a new radio segment on spirits with Joe Leary and TSN1410 with the first recording at Mission with bartender Marc Smolenski. What else is up you ask?

Watch out Vancouver as we light a fuse to Vancouver’s comedy scene – shattering stereotypes and sparking a lot of laughs. Firecracker! features an all-star cast of female improvisers. It’s a different improv experience with an all-female cast, resulting in stories told from a uniquely female perspective. The ensuing comedy is inventive, unpredictable and uproarious.

Through the medium of improv comedy, Firecracker! will explore what it means to be a woman in Vancouver with audience suggestions inspiring the improvisers’ wicked wit. The inaugural shows will honour a special female guest whose stories of their life, work and achievements will inspire the performance. Bistro Pastis is touring France with theme menus. Until July 3, the menu includes recipes for some of owner John Blakeley’s mother’s her favourite dishes including crepesand Kig-ha-Farz.  There’s also frog legs, blood sausage, tripes, porc rillettes, and trout in papillote with a camembert sauce to be enjoyed.  Santé!

Fundraiser to support Shawnigan Lake as it fights to stop the dumping of contaminated soil in its watershed. 3 Vancouver chefs and 3 island chefs will compete for culinary supremacy where you are the judges!
