Fifth Annual Five Nations Cup

7- 9 pm

Location: Listel Hotel, 1300 Robson Street, Vancouver, BC

Our Speaker: past SWWS Cellarmaster and wine educator

$44 per member/$55 per non-member
(includes wines and appetizers)
Book by January 7 to avoid disappointment.

This is a wonderful Christmas present for family and friends who like wine!

In South America, countries vie for the Copa Sudamericana trophy. With Australian Rules Football you have the Premiership Cup. South Africa participates in the Standard Bank Cup for cricket. New Zealand has the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy for cricket. In keeping with this competitive vein, we will have the South World Wine Society’s Fifth Annual Five Nations Cup.

This will be a blind tasting consisting of a red and a white flight of wine. Each flight will include a one red varietal and one red varietal from each of the 5 southern hemisphere nations. It will be a hotly contested battle with your votes determining the winner. Who will be crowned the next SWWS Champion? There are sure to be some surprises. So come out and kick off 2010 by tasting some great wines from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and Argentina. In past 5 Nations Cups, Australia and Chile have been winners. Will this be the year for New Zealand, Argentina, or South Africa? Come and find out!

As this is a BLIND wine tasting, the wines will be revealed AFTER we vote for our favourites, so you will not see the wine list in our announcement. As usual, along with these wines we will be providing a great selection of appetizers.

Our speaker is Mr. Paul Watkin, past SWWS cellar master and currently wine educator and wine agent with Seacove Group. Paul is a very knowledgeable speaker about wines, and wine/food pairings. People eagerly wait yearly for this event and to hear Paul. So sign up before it’s too late!

These tickets would make a wonderful Christmas gift to family or friends that enjoy wine.

REMINDER: Your reservation is only confirmed when we receive your cheque in the mail, or credit card payment. No cheque or cash at the door.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES – POPLAR GROVE

Poplar Grove Pinot Gris 2008: Floral and quince on the nose. Honey, apple and lemon pie in the first sip with hints of mineral as it lingers in the mouth. A good crisp finish makes this a foodie wine, ready to take on the creations of the hidden chef in all of us.

Poplar Grove Chardonnay 2008: This classic Chardonnay has aromas of green apples, peaches, & a hint of cashew nuttiness. Nectarine, honey & pear flavours arrive on the palate. Mineral & citrus notes come through on the finish. 20% of the grapes were barrel aged, which adds a hint of toast & caramel while the stainless portion brings on solid fruit & clean acidity.

Poplar Grove Merlot 2008: Cherry & cocoa aromas come through on the nose. Rich, long-lasting tannins overlay full-bodied Italian plum & blackberry flavours. A touch of spice appears on the finish. This Merlot is complex, round & exhibits well-balanced fruit, tannins & acidity. Enjoy now & take note that it will continue to improve with cellar aging. (shown, but not served)

Poplar Grove The Legacy 2005: The strength of this signature blend begins with the elegance of Merlot. The power of Cabernet Franc and the richness of Cabernet Sauvignon bring out a medley of blackberry, plum & spice. Malbec picks up the backbeat in the mid-palate. Ripe tannins build length in the finish. As big and brooding as it is now, it will develop gracefully in the years to come.
