The 7th Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival is pleased to announce the special guest speaker for the 1st Cowichan Wine Symposium presented by Vancouver Island University at their NEW Cowichan Campus on Saturday, September 17th and Sunday, September 18th.

“Our community is thrilled! Vancouver Island University is hosting our first Cowichan Wine Symposium and John Schreiner is our special guest speaker,” commented Mike Hanson, 2011 Festival Director. “We are so grateful to have John join us and share his wealth of knowledge with our visitors at the Symposium and the Stone Soup Inn Dinner.”

John Schreiner is Canada’s most prolific writer of books on wine. Since his first book in 1984, The World of Canadian Wine, he has written 15. One of John Schreiner’s newest books is BC Coastal Wine Tour Guide (Whitecap Books, $20). BC Coastal Wine Tour Guide is laid out to be a practical tool for touring wineries.

“I persuaded my publishers that the coastal wineries needed a separate guidebook to help them raise their profiles. The coastal producers are every bit as colourful as wine producers elsewhere in the province. Because the wineries are small, there is always a good chance that the owners will be hand to welcome visitors,” said John Schreiner. “It is a real pleasure to be able to present at the 1st Cowichan Wine Symposium. My newest book will be available for purchase and signing at the end of each of my symposium sessions.”

As part of their 20th vintage celebrations Kettle Valley Winery is pleased to announce that they are hosting three Celebration Dinners in September. The dates and locations are: September 10 in Naramata at the winery; September 19 in Victoria at Lure Restaurant at the Ocean Pointe Resort; and September 20 in Vancouver at Boneta restaurant.

Through the upcoming Celebration Wine Dinners Bob Ferguson and Tim Watts, Co-owners & Co-Winemakers, are not only celebrating their 20th vintage with guests but expressing their thanks to all of those supporters who have become their friends and joined their extended wine family over the past 20 years. The dinners will include wine pairings with current wines and library tastings going back to the early 1990′s. Tickets are $125. and can purchased at the winery by calling 250-496-5898 or emailing info@kettlevalleywinery.com.

LURE Restaurant and Lounge, located in the beautiful Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa, offers floor to ceiling windows with an unsurpassed view of the city’s beautiful Inner Harbour. Enjoy food created from the Island’s finest local ingredients in a casual setting. A local favourite restaurant for fresh seafood, regional cuisine, mouth watering cocktails, and award-winning food with personalized service in a spectacular waterfront setting.

Boneta is a Gastown bistro and a local hideaway, with a mission to celebrate and share local foods and their neighbourhood with guests. The menus, wines and drinks are lovingly edited for minimal fuss and maximum pleasure. Owner Neil Ingram comments on the Kettle Valley Celebration Dinner, “We are honoured to host Kettle Valley’s 20th Anniversary dinner. Bob and Tim are pioneers and standard-bearers for the BC wine industry. Their 94 Pinot Noir was a personal game-changer and we’re selfishly hoping for another taste.”

Kettle Valley planted their first vines on the Naramata Bench in 1987 and harvested their first grapes in 1992, making this year’s 2011 harvest their 20th vintage. Winemaking started as a hobby 25 years ago for Bob and Tim when they planted their first vineyards. By the time they opened their tasting room doors they were the 4th winery on The Naramata Bench, and the 23rd in the Province. The Winery is on The Naramata Bench, and now produces 10,000 cases a year from 28 acres on The Naramata Bench and 14 in the Cawston / Keremeos area.
