Look for the Ocean Wise symbol on seafood-counter products and feel good about making ocean-friendly seafood choices.

“Ocean Wise is quickly expanding across Canada. Retail partners like MarketPlace IGA make it easy for consumers to enjoy a diverse range of seafood while making smart, sustainable choices,” said Mike McDermid, Ocean Wise program manager. “Ocean Wise is the trusted symbol of ocean-friendly seafood choices and we encourage consumers to purchase sustainable seafood at MarketPlace IGA.”

Sustainable seafood is, very simply, seafood caught in a way that ensures the health of our oceans for years to come. Consumers can make Ocean Wise seafood choices at 43 MarketPlace IGA retail locations across B.C. MarketPlace IGA joins a growing group of environmentally-conscious retail partners that are helping to protect the world’s oceans by encouraging consumers to choose seafood products that are abundant, well-managed and caught by fishing methods that do not harm other species or the ocean habitat.

“With roots as a community-based retail market, MarketPlace IGA is responding to consumer demand for sustainable seafood,” said John MacNichol, vice-president, merchandising, H.Y. Louie Co. Limited. “Consumers looking for ocean-friendly choices can take comfort in choosing Ocean Wise recommended products at our seafood-counters.”

August has arrived, the fireworks have ended, and BC Day long weekend celebrated. With so many festivals, events and things to do this summer — we have those “little extras”  to make your summer celebrations taste great!

Whether it be a picnic, a BBQ or just a quiet evening in the back yard or on your patio — we have everything you need to make less work for you and more time to relax and enjoy the summer.

New Arrivals

Cantenaar Cheese

This Dutch cheese, prepared according to the highest principles of craftsmanship, distinguishes itself from other cheeses by its delicious full flavor. Moreover, because Cantenaar contains less fat and salt than ordinary cheese it is the perfect compliment to a health lifestyle.

This cow’s milk cheese is a low-fat light cheese containing 17% Milk Fat.

Cablanca Cheese

Cablanca is an excellent ‘entry level’ goat’s milk cheese if you want to try something different but are not so sure about the usually assertive taste of traditional goat cheese. Cablanca has the characteristic of goat milk but is milder than traditional unpasteurized goat’s milk cheeses. This cheese has a delicate, citrus tanginess and firm but creamy texture and a snow-white color.

This gourmet cheese is perfect to serve at breakfast, on a cheese platter, in salads, melted on toast, and tossed with cooked vegetables. Cablanca is also very low in cholesterol.

Galloways Opens in Burnaby

Galloway’s Specialty Foods’ owner Annie Kara is proud to announce the opening of her 2nd location. The bright, spacious store on Marine Way in South Burnaby offers more than 9000 products, from black cocoa to red quinoa (keen-wa). For years, customers have trekked to the Richmond location for specialty food that offers the world – fine spices from the sunny West Indies to exotic Africa, rich oils from Portugal to Australia.

Galloway’s first opened in the 1940s and shoppers today often reminisce, “I went to Galloway’s on Robson Street with my grandmother.” Today, Galloway’s is a support system for foodies and  kitchen pros who have an appetite for experimentation, look for specialty diet items such as gluten-free and sugar-free, appreciate the hard-to-find items such as black eye peas, and like to converse about recipes.

Since the Robson Street days, bins of dried fruit, nuts, beans, seeds, flour, grain, and spices have been replaced with several sizes (50g to 2kg depending on product) of Galloway’s packaged goods: calimyrna figs to goji berries; roasted pepitas to dry-roasted edamame; black turtle beans to channa; chia seeds to black sesame seeds; amaranth flour to teff flour; quinoa to spelt; ajwan seed to tukmeria (as well as 8 blends of curry).  The promise, however, remains the same: freshness and quality.

Shelves overflow with exceptional baking items and decorations, glace fruit, and Callebaut chocolate. The gourmet collection of international food includes Carnaroli rice from the Andes Mountains (the preferred rice for risotto), rose and orange water from Lebanon, harissa from Morocco, roasted piquillo peppers from Northern Spain, double 00 flour from Italy (the best for pasta and pizza crust), sriracha sauce and coconut cream powder from Thailand.

“With its quality spices and reasonably-priced, one-of-a-kind items sourced from around the globe, Galloway’s has contributed to Vancouver’s gourmet food landscape,” says Julian Bond, award-winning chef and Executive Chef and Program Director of Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. “It’s a place where the future chefs at PICA get inspired.”

Ganache Patisserie’s – Seasonal Inspirations For Spring & Summer

Ganache Pâtisserie is pleased to announce its newest creations for this year’s combined Spring/Summer 2010 collection.  Light and fruity, Framboise et Yuzu ($5.75) encapsulates a Japanese-style yuzu cheesecake centre, green tea ladyfinger sponge and fresh raspberries with an ethereal framboise mascarpone cream.  Taking the best of red velvet cake and coconut cream pie, Coco Velours Rouge ($5.75) layers moist red velvet cake with a dark chocolate ganache, coconut cream cheese mousseline, and a frosting of vanilla chantilly and coconut flakes.  A subtle combination,  Rooibos Abricot ($5.75)  pairs a milk chocolate rooibos tea parfait with a brandy parfait centre that sits on a sacher sponge foundation with layers of praline crunch and housemade apricot-ginger compote.  From the retirement of Guava Exotique arises Guave et Fraises ($5.75): an exotic strawberry-guava bavarian cream compliments a vanilla-rhubarb compote centre, lychees and layers of strawberry madaleine sponge.  And for the chocolate lovers, Chocolat Cerise Epicée ($5.75) surrounds a white chocolate crème brûlée and sour cherry core, with a dark chocolate molé mousse and spiced chocolate sablé base.

On Saturday June 19th, 2010, everyone is invited to our Yaletown location for the official launch of our Spring/Summer 2010 menu.  Throughout the day, there will be samples of our new Spring/Summer desserts, draws for doorprizes and much more.

Loblaw Sustainable Seafood Campaign

As part of Loblaw Companies Limited’s (Loblaw) ongoing commitment to help educate Canadians about the challenges facing our oceans Loblaw has extended its in-store sustainable seafood public awareness campaign to all its participating corporate and franchised stores across the country.  This public awareness campaign is in support of Loblaw’s efforts to source 100 per cent of seafood sold in its stores from sustainable sources by the end of 2013.

Additionally, Loblaw has launched the first phase of its sustainable seafood web site www.oceansfortomorrow.ca.  This web site will provide a resource for Canadians to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our oceans and the importance of sustainable seafood.  Loblaw is also pleased to announce that it has increased the number of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified products to nineteen, the most of any retailer in Canada.

“As a leading food retailer in Canada, we play a key role in feeding Canadians and we take our responsibility very seriously, including our commitment in supporting the health of our oceans,” says Paul Uys, vice-president, sustainable seafood, Loblaw Companies Limited. “We believe that an engaged and educated consumer is the ocean’s most powerful ally so we remain committed to our public awareness campaign about the importance of sustainable seafood in an effort to keep the issue top of mind with Canadians.”

In February 2010, Loblaw kicked off its public awareness campaign in select corporate and franchised stores across the country and launched a facebook page www.facebook.com/LoblawSustainableSeafood.  In May 2010, Loblaw made available the documentary about the state of our oceans, The End of the Line, to more than 700 Canadian schools across the country.

About New MSC-Certified Products:

In an ongoing effort to continue providing Canadians with additional sustainable seafood options, Loblaw is now offering a new MSC-certified product, PC® Blue Menu™ Wild Pacific Cod Fillets, that will be available at participating corporate and franchised stores across the country.

Also select Loblaws, Loblaw Great Food, Zehrs and Zehrs Great Food locations in Ontario will offer MSC-certified Wild Planet® Canned Sockeye Salmon and Wild Planet® Canned Pink Salmon.  These products are the first national brand MSC-certified products available at stores operated by Loblaw.  As the availability of the MSC-certified species needed for these new products increases, they will become available at other participating stores.

“With nineteen MSC-certified products, Loblaw remains the largest supplier of MSC-certified products in Canada,” says Mark MacPherson, senior commercial manager, Marine Stewardship Council.  “With the increase in MSC-certified products and a keen focus on their public awareness campaign, Loblaw continues to raise awareness of the need to protect of our oceans.”
