The 2011-12 season of the Winter Farmers Market will start November 5th at the Nat Bailey Stadium site that was so popular in 2010-11. We’re very excited to be returning to the “centre of the city” and look forward to a great winter season. Its hard to believe that we’re already planning for Winter but applications for the winter season went out last week and vendors are in the process of securing their schedule all the way through April 2012.

The market will take place in the parking lot and plaza of Nat Bailey Stadium, Saturdays from 10am – 2pm, November 5, 2011 – April 28, 2012 (no market December 24 or Dec 31)

Canada Safeway is pleased to partner with Food Network celebrity Chef Ricardo to launch Safeway’s annual October fundraising campaign in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF).

This unique partnership was inspired by Safeway’s longstanding relationship with CBCF and Ricardo’s personal connection to the cause, as his wife is a Breast Cancer survivor. During the campaign, Canada Safeway customers are invited to make a donation at the check stand when shopping at their local Safeway. When a donation of $2.00 is made, customers receive a limited edition “Eating Well” booklet featuring recipes from Ricardo or a coupon for Safeway products including the new Open Nature Ice Cream and Salad Dressing. Ricardo and Safeway have also dedicated 10% of the sales of the Ricardo cookware line to CBCF during the month of October.

Over $8 million has been raised for CBCF by Canada Safeway during the past nine years that has helped to create research projects that are bringing treatments to patients more quickly and efficiently. The funds are also used to bolster one of the most critical aspects of breast cancer treatment – early detection.

“Medical science in the fight against breast cancer has come a long way in the past decade. We’re glad that we could be a part of the evolution and honoured that our efforts have helped save lives,” saidChuck Mulvenna, President and Chief Operating Officer for Canada Safeway. “The encouraging research results and the utilization of services to aid in early detection are proof of the power of partnerships between businesses and medical science.”

Safeway employees are known for their enthusiasm and support which make all of this possible. During the campaign, stores and employees are decked out in pink decoration and attire. Employees often volunteer their time, plan special events in the community and utilize their talents to raise money for the cause.

Safeway’s Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser is the second of two annual cancer campaigns. Each June Safeway raises money to combat prostate cancer, one of the most prevalent forms of cancer in men. To date, the company has raised more than $15 million for cancer causes. Canada Safeway also contributes to a broad range of charitable and community programs and in 2010 donated more than $24 million to hunger relief, health and human services and programs focused on assisting people with disabilities.

On Friday, Sept 16, Galloway’s celebrates 75 years of business in Vancouver. Today, the family-owned business still sells dried fruit, nuts, and spices, as well as 9000 other food items, many of them hard-to-find, such as Aleppo Pepper from Syria, teff flour from Ethiopia, marcona almonds from Spain, manuka honey from New Zealand, rose water from Lebanon, kombu from Japan, and Hunza apricots from Pakistan.

Shoppers often reminisce, “I remember going to the Robson store with my grandmother.” Galloway’s is not just your grandmother’s store. Today, chefs, home cooks, foodies, moms and dads shop at the Richmond or South Burnaby store, or online (serving customers from Japan to Jamaica).

Celebrate With Galloway’s

In honor of 1936 and the humble beginnings of nuts, spices & dried fruits, we’re having three daily sales: Thursday Sept 15 – 36% off all nuts; Friday Sept 16 – 36% off all spices; Saturday Sept 17 – 36% off all dried fruit (think Christmas fruitcake). These deals are available in store and online.

To celebrate the technology changes that have taken place over the years, Galloway’s is hosting an online blog party on Friday, Sept 16 starting at 10 am. Check it out hourly to see what people are saying about Galloway’s and to win some great prizes. During the anniversary week, $75 gift certificates will be drawn daily for in-store customers.

As well, owner Annie Muljiani will cook her famous Chickpea & Potato in Creamy Tamarind Sauce on Friday, Sept 16, at 1pm at the Burnaby store.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT GALLOWAYS SPECIALTY FOODS

“It is so nice to see there are still specialty shops like Galloway’s out there for professional chefs or professional house cooks,” says award-winning Chef Hamid Salimian of Diva at the Met. “Galloway’s has always been my first choice to get any especial ingredients for home or my work. Happy 75th anniversary Galloway’s.”

“With its quality spices and reasonably-priced, one-of-a-kind items sourced from around the globe, Galloway’s contributes to Vancouver’s gourmet food landscape,” says Julian Bond, award-winning chef and Executive Chef and Program Director at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. “It’s a place where the future chefs at PICA get inspired.”

Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM) is providing Canadian shoppers with a new level of transparency about how farm animals are raised by now offering beef, pork and chicken certified under the 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system.

The rating system is the signature program of Global Animal Partnership, a nonprofit organization that facilitates and encourages continuous improvement in animal agriculture. Independent, third-party certifiers audit farms and rate animal welfare practices and conditions using a tiered system that ranges from Step 1 (no crates, cages or crowding) to Step 5+ (animals spend their entire lives on one farm). The system provides a way to engage a broad spectrum of producers who are committed to higher welfare for farm animals, and gives shoppers a way to make informed choices at the meat counter.

“In my 20 years of working with ranchers and farmers in Ontario and across Canada, this is the largest commitment to improving farm animal welfare that I have seen. Producers need to meet approximately 100 requirements to get a Step 1 certification, so achieving the first level is a remarkable accomplishment,” says Anne Malleau, global animal production and welfare coordinator for Whole Foods Market. “Whole Foods Market is able to adopt the 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system thanks to the true partnerships we have with our producers who put just as much emphasis on the lives and welfare of their farm animals as they do on ensuring high-quality products.”

More than 1,540 farms and ranches across the U.S. and Canada have received Step certification through independent, third-party certifiers. This includes the nearly 200 Canadian producers that provide the company’s Canadian stores with product. Colour-coded signs and stickers throughout Whole Foods Market meat departments identify these Step ratings.

“I’m proud to be a part of such a forward-thinking program as the 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system,” said Vincent Breton, president of Les Viandes du Breton. “Like many animals, pigs are happiest when they’re in their natural surroundings, doing the things they love to do, like roam free without being crowded. Having a Step 1 rating, my pigs do just that. They live in a comfortable environment, which can only lead to a higher-quality product.”

Step-rated options are now available at all Canadian Whole Foods Market stores. The company launched the program in the U.S. this past February and it has had a similar step-rated program in the U.K. since 2007. Additional species will receive rating as Global Animal Partnership standards are completed.

“I’m so honored that Global Animal Partnership is able to work with Whole Foods Market as our pilot partner. Their commitment to fully adopting our 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating program will definitely have a significant and positive impact on animal agriculture – to the benefit of farmers and ranchers, consumers and the animals themselves,” comments Miyun Park, executive director for Global Animal Partnership. “We’re already in discussions with other grocers and restaurateurs, who, like Whole Foods Market, are dedicated to improving the welfare of farm animals.”

About Whole Foods Market®

Founded in 1980 in Austin, Texas, Whole Foods Market (wholefoodsmarket.com, NASDAQ: WFM) is the leading natural and organic food retailer. As America’s first national certified organic grocer, Whole Foods Market was named “America’s Healthiest Grocery Store” by Health magazine. The company’s motto “Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet”™ captures its mission to ensure customer satisfaction and health, Team Member excellence and happiness, enhanced shareholder value, community support and environmental improvement. Thanks to the company’s nearly 60,000 Team Members, Whole Foods Market has been ranked as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America by FORTUNE magazine for 14 consecutive years. In fiscal year 2010, the company had sales of more than $9 billion and currently has more than 300 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

About Global Animal Partnership

Global Animal Partnership (globalanimalpartnership.org), an international, nonprofit charitable organization founded in 2008, brings together farmers, scientists, ranchers, retailers, and animal advocates—a diverse group with the common commitment to continually improve the lives of farm animals. The organization’s signature program, the 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Standards, recognizes and rewards the welfare practices of producers who are audited and certified to the different Step levels by independent third-parties; promotes and incentivizes continuous improvement through its unique, multi-tiered design; engages the broad spectrum of industry; and better informs consumers about the production systems they choose to support. Already in these early years, Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Standards has fast become North America’s leading welfare certification program. To date, more than 140 million farm animals are raised annually according to the 5-Step standards by more than 1,540 farms and ranches.

The Local Fresh Food Market has risen out of the ashes of adversity and transformed into a farmer owned store that is fast becoming a vital part of the neighbourhood.

Formerly known as the Grow-In Grocer, the store almost collapsed when former owner, Deb Reynolds, disappeared with the trust and money of farmers and customers alike.

Luckily, the passion of the farmers prevailed and the many of the former customers have returned to revitalize the store. Designed to avail busy city folk of Fraser Valley’s best produce, farmers eliminate the middle man and deliver the season’s freshest and finest when the harvest is at the peak of perfection. All members are committed to safe and sustainable farming and welcome the opportunity of forging a direct relationship with the consumer.

“Guaranteed access to fresh produce, often picked within hours of selling, lets our customers experience unsurpassed flavours and textures,” shares Bernice Noel, store manager. “The Fraser Valley generates some of the finest food ingredients in the world. We are a community of farmers who are collaborating to bring quality ingredients to our market within hours of harvesting.”

The owners include the Gelderman family, who began farming in 1978 on their property in Abbotsford, raising pigs and growing blueberries. Their environmental awareness is reflected in superior products and the practice of full circle farming.

Another owner is the Taves family, who run The Apple Barn. In 1940 Great Grandfather John decided to farm the fertile soils in the south part of Abbotsford. Grandson Loren and his wife Corinne have continued the orchards full of crisp sweet apples and have added berries and greenhouse vegetables, using integrated pest management for high yields without chemical pesticides.

”Just flavourful healthy beef” is the slogan for Redl’s Home Grown Beef. The two brothers raise cattle the natural way, on pasture, without antibiotics, pesticides or herbicides, or growth hormones.

Wendy Boys is the proud owner of Cocolico, a Vancouver-based company specializing in small-batch, hand-crafted chocolates and dessert sauces. She is an award-winning pastry chef who has apprenticed under world-renowned chocolatiers and designed dessert programs for some of Canada’s top restaurants. As one of the owners of Local Fresh Food Market, Wendy brings her taste for the extraordinary to the store.

Striving for excellence in local product, the store carries Birchwood Dairy gourmet ice cream, delectable cheeses from Amie’s Cheese & Dairy, Wild Coast Edibles teas, mushrooms and berries, piping hot coffee and fresh baked organic goodies from Aphrodite’s Cafe & Pie Shop, and wild sustainable seafood harvested by Blue Comet Seafoods.

The Local Fresh Food Market is the place where folks can buy local, fresh, organic or natural products grown or made in British Columbia. A shopping trip to The Local Fresh Food Market at 3010 Cambie Street is the beginning of a fresh experience and a lifetime of tasty and healthy dining.
