Chefs to the Field
On Sunday, August 9th, from 11am to 4pm gather your friends and family and head to Terra Nova Rural Park in Richmond for a day of food, music, and family fun at the 8th Annual ‘Chefs to the Field’. This year, 20 chefs from some of the lower mainland’s finest restaurants will donate their time and talent to provide tasty offerings for sale to raise funds for the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society. This year’s participating restaurants include Beyond, Blue Canoe, Cibo, Crave, Culinary Capers, Diva at the Met, Globe@YVR, Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver, Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, Papi’s, Raincity Grill, Indigo, Steveston Pizza, Tapenade Bistro, The Mosaic, Vancouver Airport Marriott, Vancouver Community College, and Wild Rice. Tickets for these treats are $4 each. All proceeds benefit the Terra Nova Schoolyard Society and The Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Society. Terra Nova Rural Park is located at 2631 Westminster Highway (featured in above map).
For the first time, Chefs to the Field will feature 2 Green Cuisine Black Box Competitions. During the Student Competition from 11am-12:30pm, students from Vancouver’s leading culinary schools and the Richmond School District #38 Apprenticeship Program at Richmond Secondary School will compete by creating one dish. The Professional Competition takes place from 2-3:30pm where ten of the participating restaurants will harvest from the field to accompany their mystery black box item. Judging begins at 3:30pm. Watch the competition on 5 LED screens throughout the garden, bid on a silent auction item or take a guided tour of the area – a real hidden gem. Parking is limited so all visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle (there will be secure bike parking) or carpool to 1 of 2 shuttle bus locations. A free shuttle bus service will depart from the City Works Yard (5599 Lynas Lane) and WorksafeBC (off Elmbridge Way) every 15 minutes from 11am-4pm.
Terra Nova Schoolyard Project operates on 7000 square feet of growing space generously provided by the City of Richmond. The program aims to create an environment that instills a value of fresh food, healthy eating, personal and social responsibility. Working with volunteers, students plan their garden in the winter, prepare the beds in spring, plant the seeds and maintain crops in summer, and harvest their produce in the fall. Through hands-on learning, children learn where their food comes from, appreciate seasonality, and gain an increased awareness of their natural environment and the community around them.
