With five Curious Flea’s under its belt, the River Market promises the sixth Curious Flea will be bigger, better, and more curious than ever.

The curious floor at River Market, which is on the second floor is a place where visitors can try a circus class, learn an instrument, take in a temporary art exhibit or rent desk space by the hour. For the past year, the Market has gotten even more curious with its quarterly Curious Flea Market, which features a host of antiques, collectibles, whatnots, and doo dads, and has drawn a crowd from all across the Lower Mainland who want to see all that this flea, and New Westminster, has to offer.

At the end of August, River Market is doing it again, with even more vendors and curiosities to discover. On August 30th and 31st, the market will welcome a myriad of vendors who will be selling carefully chosen mid-century modern items, antiques, and collectibles. Many vendors are artisans who are rebuilding and reimagining items, recreating the past with their vision of the future. Vendors include Antique Alley, Savage Secondhand, Urban Sketcher, Signtology, Professor whovianart, Lola Getz and more.

River Market is the perfect location for this modern kind of flea market. It’s already home to quality vintage goods, thanks to merchant Mid Century Modern Home. Owner Jenny Cashin has developed a following for the shop’s beautifully restored Danish Modern and Mid-Century Modern furniture, art, lighting and decorative pieces. It also hosts the Artisan’s Market, an incubator space and retail shop for upcoming artisans to create and sell their wares. And just steps awayis New West’s historic Antique Alley: Front Street’s colourful clutch of antique stores. They’ll be well represented at Curious Flea and visitors are encouraged to complete their day by strolling over to the shops on Front Street.

And this time, to add to the curiosity, they are doing a massive LEGO build.  Over 42,000 pieces of will be put together in a mosaic commemorating the stellar New Westminster summer.  Community groups, kids clubs and interested individuals will be coming together to build this piece.  The end product will be on display on the Curious Floor to commemorate this great community building experience.

Highlights of this Curious Flea include live music, incredible merchandise, the community LEGO build and the Battle of the Curious: a match-up of unusual items that everyone is invited to take part in. Have something jaw-droppingly strange tucked away in the back of a closet? Bring it to the flea on Saturday, August 31st. The most curious object will be immortalized forever in the Curious Hall of Fame, and the winner will receive a spectacular prize. Finally, of course, there’s the food. At no other flea market can shoppers take a break from browsing to enjoy award-winning restaurants alongside a spectacular riverside view.
