FashioningCancer_2014_757x422-0508-560x312Tuesday, September 23, 2014
6:30 – 9:00 pm

Porsche Centre Vancouver 688 Terminal Avenue Vancouver, BC

In partnership with alumni UBC, Western Living Magazine (WLM), the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and Porsche Centre Vancouver.

Fashion, like art, might be seen as a reflection of society, and clothing designers can find inspiration in the unlikeliest of places — even cancer.

Jacqueline Firkins, a costume design professor in UBC’s Department of Theatre and Film has created a collection of ten exquisite evening gowns inspired by colourful microscopic images of cancer cells, captured in the lab of UBC scientist Christian Naus. Her goal was to bring science and art together to generate discussion about the experience of cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as cancer research and prevention. Having attracted significant media attention over the past few months, the gowns will now be sold to raise money to support the work of the Cancer Prevention Centre, a partnership between UBC and the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS).

On Tuesday, September 23rd, join business and community leaders for a glittering evening of fashion, music, and philanthropy. Fashioning Cancer – part of Western Living‘s Design Week – will provide an unforgettable evening of inspiration, education, and entertainment, with Canada’s Queen of Punk, Bif Naked – a cancer survivor, herself – performing in support of cancer prevention.

Guests will enjoy a cocktail party featuring food by Hawksworth Restaurant, a silent auction of unique items and live auction of the most-talked about, one-of-a-kind dresses. Show your support and join us for this special evening! To preview the collection of dresses, please visit the Fashioning Cancer project website.
