National Rum Day at the Refinery

Calling all Vancouver rum lovers…August 16th is National Rum Day!
Did you know that more rum is sold in Vancouver during these warm summer months than any other time of year? And did you also know that rum was originally called the Kill Devil and used to clean hair and keep it healthy in the 1800s? Well, it’s true.

One of Vancouver’s top mixologists, Lauren Mote and the bartending team from The Refinery is bringing sexy back – Flor de Cana Rum has chosen us to host rum-party on August 16 to celebrate National Rum Day. Simultaneously, rum lovers from across North America will toast their refreshing libations amongst friends. What better place to mingle with friends than the Refinery!

Drinking: $5 Flor de Cana rum cocktails – this includes a new list of cocktails, using homemade orgeat, gingerbeer and bitters. Have you tried the gorgeous Rum Old Fashioned yet? You will.

Eating: The Refinery’s Ben de Champlain will conquer the ultimate Rum inspired menu for rum lovers with their cocktails! Help yourselves by donation!

Lauren will also show Kid Carson Show listeners how to create some classic rum cocktails and new cocktails for their own National Rum Day celebrations – this happens at 8:20 am sharp Monday August 16! She will even give away a National Rum Day prize pack that contains all the essentials for a great celebration including VIP swag, and GCs to the Refinery on National Rum Day!

Recipes:
Rum Old Fashioned
1.50 oz Flor de Cana Rum
0.25 oz House Bitters
0.25 oz Chocolate Vermouth
1 dash Angostura BItters
1 bar spoon raw sugar
Stir all ingredients together to dissolve the sugar – one dissolved, add ice, and stir for 30-45 seconds. Pour over ice in a single old fashioned glass, garnish with burnt orange peel.

Punch-Buggy
1.50 oz Flor de Cana Rum
0.50 oz Dehli Bitters
0.75 oz Lime Juice
1.00 oz Pu-erh Tea Syrup
2.00 oz Homemade Gingerbeer
Build all ingredients in a collins glass over ice. Stir, and top with freshly grated nutmeg.

Nuevo Macuá
1.50 oz Flor de Cana Rum
0.50 oz Tamarind & Pomegranate Bitters
0.75 oz Orange Juice
0.75 oz Lime Juice
0.75 oz Macademia Syrup
Vigorously shake all ingredients together, pour over fresh ice in collins glass.

Amargo
1 egg white
1 Tbsp Coconut Cream
1.50 oz Flor de Cana Rum
0.50 oz Black Cherry & Noyaux Bitters
0.75 oz Lemon Juice
1.00 oz Orgeat
1 dash Angostura Bitters
Dry shake ingredients for 10 seconds, add ice, shake vigorously. Double strain into an old fashioned glass. No garnish.
