Saturna Island Family Estate Riesling 2011 ($16.99)

Saturna Island Family Estatsaturnae Winery’s Winemaker, Homan Haftbaradaran, has made some welcome changes at Saturna Island winery; one being sourcing some of the grapes off-island to develop varieties not grown on the Saturna.

Haftbaradaran sourced some of the grapes for the 2011 Riesling wines from Okanagan Falls and from the Similkameen’s Cawston from sunrise vineyards owned by the Gidda Family.  The wine is full of quince, grapefruit, lemon, lime and has some hints of guava.  The acidity balances the residual sugar nicely.  Very good with fatty cured meat such as salumi or some dried chorizo with manchego and quince paste.

**please note that in 2009-2010 I was the Marketing and Sales Manager for Saturna Island Family Estate Winery, but I have currently have no affiliation with and receive no financial compensation from the winery.

My grandparents used to have a cottage on Saturna Island, but before any wine was being made there. Is a good idea to source some grapes from other regions as there are only a handful of varieties which could do Well in this climate. Its cool that they’re doing well though!
