What to do in Vancouver this week of January 2017

Is it just me or does it seem like the new year really starts in the second week of January? Last week wasn’t bad, it’s not like I ate a dozen donuts in one seating, I actually had some great gal pal time  and even planned my pre-wedding week away. I did try a new restaurant, and explored new cocktails and food, and even went for a couple runs. I just don’t feel I buckled down like I need to for 2017 business-wise I suppose. So, since my business is telling you what to do (or something like that), let’s get this week going with a few great events I’m giving the thumbs up to in and around Vancouver. Best Sommelier of BC Competition

Monday January 9 at Rogers Arena (200 Level, Captain’s Lounge, enter via Gate 10, 800 Griffiths Way, Vancouver),  at 1:00 pm you can catch the top three finalist competing in the practical exam that will determine the Best Sommelier of BC. There will be test on Sparkling wine service, Red wine decanting, Food and wine pairing, Menu correction and a Blind tasting of cocktails, red and white wines. It’s open to the public by donation. Later that night, the Winning announcement for BC’s Best Sommelier in 2017 will be announced at a sold out event at CIBO. I’m heading down to catch some of the action.

January 10th, 2017 at the Cinematheque Theatre in Vancouver, BC you can catch Psychonaut, a sci-fi indie feature shot exclusively in the Vancouver area. Psychonaut is a psychedelic sci-fi indie feature about mind travel. It follows one man’s journey on a path of spiritual awakening through science and technology. Scientists who have been pushed into underground research facilities following government intervention, continue to work on discovering the inner workings of the human mind. But when a secret disc containing sensitive research is stolen, it’s a race against time to recover the disc before worlds collide, causing catastrophic consequences.

Tutto Dinner at Campagnolo

tuttoChef Joachim Hayward of Campagnolo Roma is proud to present Tutto, a dinner celebrating the whole ingredient.   

 

“During my time spent in Italy, I gained a strong admiration for cooking with whole ingredients,” says Joachim Hayward, chef de cuisine of Campagnolo Roma. “A little seasoning and technique was all that was required to allow the flavours and natural beauty of quality ingredients to shine.”

 

On Wednesday, September 24 guests will gather around communal tables to feast on a variety of dishes honouring ingredients in their natural form, served alla famiglia and complemented by beer from Bomber Brewing. Each satisfying dish will showcase one local delicacy including freshwater smelts, wild BC Sockeye salmon, crispy Braeburn Farms chicken, Sloping Hill Farm porchetta, Stoney Paradise tomatoes, Chilliwack corn, Okanagan peaches and cherries, and many more regionally sourced seasonal ingredients. Tickets for Tutto are $79 inclusive of tax and gratuity.

Spot Prawns Spotted at Campagnolo and Campagnolo ROMA

campagnolo prawnsAt both Campagnolo locations from May 13 until the last Wild BC Spot Prawn’s rears its pinkish head, Chefs Nathan Lowey and Joachim Hayward will present a four-course family feast staring this succulent creature. Start with a BC Spot Prawn boil with spot prawns with house-made sausage and seasonal vegetables. Three more family-style courses follow: pizzas, pastas, and then desserts.  $49 per person (plus tax and gratuity). Both restaurants are currently taking reservations for tables of four or more from May 13 through to the end of BC Spot Prawn season.

Campagnolo’s Quinto Quarto dinner

The staff at ROMA are hosting their third Quinto Quarto dinner on Wednesday, September 26 with two seatings available at 6pm and 8:30pm. Dinner is served “alla famiglia,” showcasing offal served at communal tables. Quinto Quarto refers to the “fifth quarter” of the animal (the offal) that Roman butchers often kept for themselves, as it was all the poor or people of lower classes could afford. Offal, in Roman cooking, is as important as any of the outer quarters, fore and hind. Chefs Ted Anderson and Nathan Lowey are dedicated to keeping this important Roman tradition alive! Tickets are $49 and can be purchased here!

Every Wednesday, Chef de Cuisine Adam Vaughan and Executive Chef Ted Anderson shop at the Main St. Station Farmers Market, located just steps from Campagnolo. They find the best seasonal ingredients of the day and create a summer dish available for that night’s dinner service at Campagnolo (1020 Main St.

If you prefer to cook at home… shop the Main St. Market on Wednesday’s, look for the Campagnolo table, pick up some of our house-made pasta and add your fresh market finds.  Check out this delicious recipe inspired by the Main Street Farmer’s Market.

Did You Ask for Fried Chicken?

Well, somebody did and we were listening. Fat Dragon Bar-B-Q introduces Dragon Fried Chicken. This half Polderside Farm’s Chicken is brined in smoked water and double fried, making it extra crispy. Served with our house-made Korean chili barbecue sauce, this spicy bird is available daily on our regular menu, while it lasts.

Campagnolo ROMA to serve a family style dinner showcasing the “fifth quarter”

Campagnolo ROMA is hosting their second Quinto Quarto dinner on Wednesday, May 2 at 9pm. Dinner is served alla famiglia, showcasing offal at communal tables. Quinto Quarto refers to the “fifth quarter” of the animal that Roman butchers often kept for themselves. Traditionally, in Rome, cattle was divided into quarters; the first “quarto” was dedicated to be sold to the nobles, the second for the clergy, the third for the middle class and the fourth “quarto” for the soldiers. The poor or lower class could only afford the entrails or fifth “quarto”. Offal, in Roman cooking, is as important as any of the outer quarters, fore and hind. Chef de Cuisine Nathan Lowey is dedicated to keeping this important Roman tradition alive and will be hosting a Quinto Quarto dinner at ROMA a few times throughout the year.
