THE GLOWBAL COLLECTION of Restaurants Plans Splashy Opening for Its Biggest and Boldest Project Yet: the New COAST Restaurant and O Lounge in Downtown Vancouver.

Emad Yacoub and Shannon Bosa Yacoub, owners of THE GLOWBAL COLLECTION of Restaurants announce:
• the company’s popular Yaletown seafood restaurant COAST is relocating to a newly designed, soaring 7,000 square-foot space in downtown Vancouver; and
• the company debuts O Lounge in an adjacent 1,200 square-foot space.

On Friday, July 10, COAST Restaurant and O Lounge open at 1054 Alberni Street. Josh Wolfe is Executive Chef and Jan Erik Wichmann is General Manager.

“With a back-to-basics seafood menu, COAST will showcase the best quality seafood served with classic style,” says proprietor, Emad Yacoub. “This is a place where diners can slurp icy oysters, crack into a crab claw and savour a rich chowder, along with a crisp glass of wine or a nice, chilled beer.”

Executive Chef Josh Wolfe can capture his approach in one word: dramatic. “Guests will enjoy oysters still dripping with saltwater. Chowders are prepared in front of them. Our Sushi Chef creates something magical before their eyes.”

At the 24-seat ‘Oyster & Chowder Bar’, Atlantic and Pacific COAST oysters will be shucked along with signature dishes like Dungeness crab cakes, seafood platters, lobsters, chowders and sushi. Landlubbers may select juicy cuts of Triple A Canadian Prime beef. A well balanced wine list features 100 wines under $100, stocked full of Pacific Northwest gems.

THE GLOWBAL COLLECTION attracts an energetic and uniquely Vancouver crowd. Known for its playful buzz, COAST will continue its legacy as a place to remember and return to often.

“Clever and inviting design contribute to our signature vibe,” says Yacoub. “And this room is a soulful stunner.”

The expansive space features a clean, contemporary design by Vancouver’s BOX Interior Design. Deep turquoise tones, mosaic-tile floors and lush leather banquettes define a breathtaking, new Vancouver aesthetic and extends a respectful nod to historic San Francisco, home to the world’s most iconic seafood eateries.

The COAST entry welcomes guests through a street-side lounge bordered by fire pits. Doubling the former restaurant’s capacity, the top level seats 120 and the main level seats 125, including a dramatic 20-foot circular ‘Oyster & Chowder Bar’. Beyond, guests will be drawn to a warm and intimate mezzanine featuring a signature ‘Boardroom Table’ and a private dining space.

In addition, O Lounge opens, destined to bustle. Here guests can sip house cocktails, survey the crowd and enjoy the full menu from COAST until midnight. O features an intimate split-level room seating 70, with plush, tangerine mid-rise sofas and sultry back-lit columns.

COAST is open Monday through Friday, 11:30 am to 12:00 am; Saturday and Sunday 4:00 pm to 12:00 am. Please call 604.685.5010 for reservations.

Officially open this weekend (July 3rd), The Edge Social Grille & Lounge is the newest arrival on downtown Granville Street proving that Vancouver businesses are embracing this revived neighbourhood. Promising to become a major destination, this large, modern yet comfortable room is by Nigel Walker of Nigel Walker & Associates who was asked to design a “one-off” room for a unique look in a city of so many casual-fine-dining big boxes. The room is separated into a casual front lounge, bar, back dining room with booths, front dining room and two private rooms. The jewel in the crown on this Granville and Helmcken corner is a 100 seat patio running along the front of the restaurant set deep into the large street front courtyard, the only major dining patio on Granville Street.

Open for lunch, brunch, dinner and late night dining, the menu items include patio fare such as local Albacore tuna salade Niçoise; chopped chicken cobb or a grilled prosciutto and brie sandwich on sourdough with fig jam and basil mayonnaise. Comfort foods include truffled mac and cheese; house ground beef burger with apple wood smoked cheddar; roasted free- run chicken and flat breads – a selection of free formed freshly baked pizzas. The Asian flavours that Vancouverites and visitors crave are offered through five wok dishes that include squid, shrimp, bbq pork and prawns. The menu is varied, with a selection designed for diners who return often, and of course, sustainability and local products are a priority when choosing ingredients. No giant purchasing department here, just one restaurant with chefs that work one-on-one with suppliers committed to superior products.

The people behind The Edge Social Grille and Lounge are a blend of seasoned professionals, astute business people and young guns. Owner Amir Virani is a successful hands-on Hotelier. He has overseen the building of the restaurant but leaves the operations to James Drummond. Drummond, a 20 year industry vet has run some of Vancouver´s leading restaurants as General Manager of Earl´s, Sandbar and Cardero’s as well as a consultant to the hospitality trade. Alongside James is David Sarich. American Express service recipient, David’s background includes Glowbal, Coast, Lift, RedxRed and G Sports Bar and Grill. In the kitchen cooking is Travis Rea, our young gun whose background includes small restaurants and bistros as well as seven years as head chef for Milestones. Behind the scenes is Executive Chef Glen Zoteck, former chef instructor at VCC, Executive Chef for the Spectra Group and consulting chef throughout California and Asia. And marketing – not just about knowing how to market, it’s about knowing your market and for that Jill Wiersma steps into the picture. With a background that includes work with smaller independent companies, Jill’s hands-on style means she really gets to know her market. Together they have put together a team of support staff from assistant managers, to cooks and servers that will be the best trained staff in the city.

Downtown Granville Street has had more than a fresh coat of paint recently; it’s been taken apart, polished and put back together with street scaping, green space, triple wide sidewalks and heritage lighting, not to mention an underground transportation system that crosses it and The Edge Social Grille and Lounge is right in the center of the action. Surrounded by Yaletown, the Financial and Entertainment District, The Edge is expected to be the perfect spot for Vancouverites and visitors dining and entertaining needs, and with the large courtyard adjacent to the patio, a perfect spot to take in the atmosphere of the city on downtown Granville Street.

The Name: The Edge Social Grille and Lounge, a registered and title searched name. The Edge – that name is not a particularly unique one, and as we are finding out there are a number of restaurants and bars in North America that use “Edge” as part of their name, but it is descriptive of so many things and we feel great about using it. Granville Street is on The Edge of becoming one of the “Best Streets in North America”*. Granville and Helmcken is on The Edge of Yaletown and the entertainment district. This part of Granville Street has a bit of an Edge with later hours, nightclubs and live venues. The Edge Social Grille and Lounge, a restaurant that is on The Edge of fine dining, on The Edge of casual dining. Grille and lounge, our “Liquor primary” licence gives us The Edge with later hours and more freedom to serve as a cocktail lounge in off peak dining hours and finally,…offering the best casual fine dining service in Vancouver gives us an Edge.

*“Best Streets in North America” – The City of Vancouver is working to re-establish the status of Granville Street as one of Vancouver’s Great Streets based on the definition of a Great Street which author Allan Jacobs provides in his classic book Great Streets

June is finally here and le soleil is our inspiration!! We bask in it, we celebrate it and we sit ocean side on our glorious patio enjoying the fruits of the sea! We are extending the Spot Prawn extravaganza for another month!! We have a new June Chef’s menu featuring the B.C. Spot Prawn! As a Provence family member you always get rewarded! This month our code word is SOLEIL. Fitting right? Just say the word or you can print the certificate, present it to your server and receive your family member price when you order the Chef’s menu! Every time you order the Chef’s menu you can enter to win this month’s prize: 20lbs of B.C. Spot Prawns, complete with cooking instructions from Chef Jean-Francis… perfect for the BBQ.

Just for fun our Sommelier, Rachelle Goudreau, has come up with some simple suggestions for your outdoor cooking: stay within budget and wow your guests with your amazing wine knowledge, be the star of all your parties! These three suggestions provide a range of styles and price points.

For a fun and inexpensive summer wine you could go with Espelt ‘Corali’ Rosé from Spain. If you prefer a crisp classic warm weather white try Kris Pinot Grigio from Italy. Or for something unique try the lightly oaked Pinot Blanc from Okanagan wine producer Sandhill. All available at BC Liquor stores for $15.99, $21.99, and $17.99 respectively.

Chef Jean-Francis added this tip: for cooking Spot Prawns to perfection simply toss them with sea salt and light olive oil then place on the BBQ whole (heads and shells). Cook for two minutes on each side and squeeze some fresh lemon and voila… the perfect summer meal! Don’t forget June is the month to celebrate your father. We will be taking all sizes of reservations for this very special brunch or dinner so call and book soon to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to sharing patio bliss, belly laughs and fabulous food with you all summer long! Bon Appetit!

Following the launch of their new season menu, Miku Restaurant is proud to announce its certification to the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Program. This significant conservation program serves to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood, helping them make ocean wise seafood choices by identifying dishes on partnering restaurant menus.

Since opening last November, Miku has already made its mark on the city’s culinary landscape with the introduction of its signature Aburi Sushi to North America, lightly flame-seared to release incredible smells and flavors, (a style hailing from the city of Miyazaki on the southwest tip of Japan), Miku has earned recognition as one of the city’s top three Japanese restaurants at the annual Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. “We are keen to excel in all areas of the dining experience” says General Manager Tai Hasumi “partnering with Ocean Wise underscores our values, we are delighted to have been accepted in to the program.”

Miku’s new menu reflects Head Chef Keiichiro Nireda’s traditional Japanese training while showcasing pristine ingredients and cutting-edge techniques. An enticing assortment of aburi-style sushi with signature house made sauces including the Pacific Roll (albacore tuna, yellowtail, shiso leaf, egg and cucumber) and the celebrated Miku Roll (sockeye salmon, cucumber, sea urchin, crab mayonnaise and golden caviar) are featured alongside entrees such as Aburi Washu Beef, (American Kobe beef with wasabi soy sauce). For the ultimate experience, the “Omakase” feast leaves decisions in the experienced hands of Chef Kei and his team who will conjure a seasonal and spontaneous seven-course menu.

Miku’s newly opened chic urban patio complete with huge umbrellas, fragrant flowers and a view through to the mountains, provides the ideal setting inviting guests to feast their eyes on the scenery and their appetites on the magnificent menu at Miku.

Miku Restaurant
Fresh ingredients, global inspiration and artful presentation are the benchmarks of Miku Restaurant’s outstanding, innovative cuisine. From its signature Aburi-style sushi, lightly seared and infused with savory sauces to its tantalizing meats, tenderized by Sumiyaki grilling, and desserts created by its Kyoto-trained pastry chef, Miku introduces cutting-edge culinary techniques to Vancouver. Miku restaurant is located at 1055 West Hastings Street at the corner of Thurlow and is open from 11.30am to 10.00pm throughout the summer season.

Andre McGillivray and Steve Da Cruz have formed their own company, pistol star restaurants inc. and with Chef Anthony Sedlak – the popular host of Food Network’s The Main – will open a new restaurant named the corner suite bistro de luxe in Vancouver this July 2009.

The restaurant will be founded upon a back-to-basics approach with contemporary twists in both the cuisine and restaurant design. Sedlak’s menus will be French at heart done in a modern perspective and delivered at a bistro price range. With the corner suite bistro de luxe McGillivray, Da Cruz and Sedlak plan to offer a smart, eclectic, and innovative restaurant with the intention of livening Vancouver’s independent downtown dining scene.

the corner suite bistro de luxe will serve lunch from noon until 5:00 pm and dinner until 1:00 am Monday through Saturday, closing at midnight on Sundays. Located on the corner of 850 Thurlow Street, the room will have 130 seats total, with 90 in the dining room and 40 in the bar. The restaurant will be owned and managed by McGillivray and Da Cruz, both of whom have operated some of Vancouver’s most successful restaurants. McGillivray was instrumental in the formation of the wildly popular Boneta; Da Cruz has managed and tended bar while creating some of the most coveted cocktail lists in the city. And Sedlak – who is a Vancouver native and earned his stripes at The Observatory and La Trompette before winning the Food Network’s Superstar Chef Challenge and becoming host of The Main – is excited to bring his comfort cooking out from behind the camera and back to the plates of diners.

The restaurant is anticipated to open July 1st, 2009.

ANTHONY SEDLAK – CHEF

Twenty-five year old Anthony Sedlak obtained his first job as a busboy at Lupins Café – one of the restaurants atop Grouse Mountain – at the age of 13. He was very quickly promoted to a line cook position at the mountain’s main kitchen. By 16 Anthony was working at the resort’s flagship dining room, The Observatory, where he made his way from 2nd cook to 1st cook and then Chef de Partie. At the same time, Anthony also completed the Culinary Arts Program at Carson Graham Secondary School in North Vancouver and a four-year BC Chefs’ Apprenticeship through Vancouver Community College.

Next, the just turned 20-year-old Sedlak joined the team at La Trompette in West London. Though he joined the restaurant in a junior role, Sedlak worked his way up to the position of Executive Sous-Chef in just one year. The time in London would prove to be a pivotal experience for the young chef, with late night hangouts with the crew from Fat Duck and Gordon Ramsay’s all part of an 18-hour day’s work. Following two years at La Trompette, Sedlak returned to Vancouver and accepted a Sous-Chef position at The Observatory.

In 2006 at just 22 years of age, Sedlak was selected to represent Canada at the Hans Bueschken World Junior Chef Challenge in Auckland, New Zealand, where he took silver medal honours. Later that same year, Anthony was one of six participants selected to compete in Food Network’s Superstar Chef Challenge. Anthony was a natural in front of the camera as well as in the kitchen, and he won the competition.

Since 2007, Anthony has traveled between Vancouver and Toronto to film the Food Network series, The Main. With filming now wrapped for the 2009 season, the corner suite bistro de luxe will bring Anthony back to his hometown of Vancouver, and into his own restaurant kitchen.
ANDRE McGILLIVRAY – PISTOL STAR RESTAURANTS INC.
Andre McGillivray moved to Vancouver in 1991 with a few years of restaurant experience under his belt. His first day in the city, McGillivray landed a position at the newly opened CinCin restaurant, where he stayed and worked the bar for the next eight years. After CinCin, Andre held a number of managerial positions at some of Vancouver’s top restaurants, namely Lucy Mae Brown, Lumiere, Feenie’s, and Chambar. In 2006, Andre returned to Lumiere and Feenies as General Manager, and followed with a position as Maitre’D at the renowned Le Crocodile.

Deciding that 18 years of experience running other people’s restaurants was enough, Andre opened his own restaurant, Boneta, in June of 2007. Boneta became one of Vancouver’s most acclaimed and talked about restaurant openings of that year, and the restaurant earned numerous awards and accolades locally, nationally, and internationally.

It was at Boneta that McGillivray first worked with Steve Da Cruz, and the two became friends quickly. In late 2008, McGillivray and Da Cruz left Boneta, but remained in close contact. The friendship would prove to be serendipitous. In April of 2009 the two formed a partnership under the name pistol star restaurants inc. and their first restaurant, the corner suite bistro de luxe, will open in July 2009.

STEVE DA CRUZ – PISTOL STAR RESTAURANTS INC.

Steve Da Cruz honed his skills in many New York restaurant bars including; Ristorante Brunelli, The York Imperial, Anju, Ruby Foo’s Times Square, Mona’s, The Tupelo Grill, Time Café, Fez, and City 75 at the Rockefeller. From the top of the Algonquin Hotel to a basement with Tony Bennett and an underground speakeasy, Steve earned his stripes behind the bar, and then some.

Over the last two years Steve has consulted for and managed the bar program at some of Vancouver’s most exciting and beautiful restaurants including Boneta, Chill Winston, and Gastropod. Founded upon his love for the classics, Steve is dedicated to the unearthing of long lost recipes and modernizing them with the finest of techniques. His encyclopedic knowledge of spirits and their amazing stories is a point of pride.

Steve’s personal and program accolades have been many including being nominated as Bartender of the Year in several local media outlets. As well as being partner in pistol star restaurants inc. Da Cruz has also pioneered a new presentation format for classic
