What’s Good This Week June 20 Edition

What To Do In And Around Vancouver This Week

It’s the first day of summer and I’m feeling rather out of sorts for some reason. It’s actually the kind of weather I like today, so that can’t be it, although I know a lot of my friends would be happier with a little more sunshine. However, I’ll soldier through and maybe I just need a night at home or a hug or something. As for my recommendations, there’s lots this week. I’ll be heading off to Chase to a Bison Ranch and catching up with what’s new in Kamloops this weekend, so stay tuned on social for reports on my journey.

Deep South Meets Down Under at Mamie Taylor’s – June 20

Mamie Taylor’s Restaurant is teaming up with Australia’s Alpha Box & Dice winery for a Deep South Meets Down Under Winemakers Dinner on Tuesday, June 20 at 7pm.

The intimate evening will be hosted by the dynamic duo of Dylan and Justin Fairweather, whose laid-back Aussie attitudes and love for the unusual led to the founding of Alpha Box & Dice. The brothers’ winery won internationally acclaim for its “The Alphabet of Wine” — the construction a different wine style to represent each letter of the alphabet. (In case you’re wondering, they’ve just put the finishing touches on number 17.)

What’s Good This Week in Vancouver May 23 Edition

Events In And Around Vancouver

Hope y’all had a great long weekend if you got one. Michael worked all weekend sadly, as did I, so we stayed in Vancouver, but I did get out for an 8 km run through Shaughnessy on Sunday, took some strolls along West 4th and West Broadway and checked out some shops, visited with Tess, Jennifer, my sister and nephew and had another amazing dinner at Chicha. What did you get up to? Any new restaurants, beers or wines we should know about? Comment below if you’d like to share! This week there’s a ton to do food and drink-wise for all, and then we’re headed up to Naramata for the opening of our friend Victor Bongo’s new restaurant https://naramatainn.com/ambrosia-restaurant-lounge/ along with his wine launch at Serendipity Winery. I’ll be insta-storing that and more adventures so tune in and I’ll try to be entertaining. Summer is here! Well for now.

Ribfest Canada Day

Five of the city’s top amateur grill masters to get raked over the coals on Canada Day

RibFest began in 2009 at an East Van backyard BBQ hosted by restaurant industry wine buyer Jeff Curry. Since then, RibFest has been a battlefield where the city’s most ambitious amateur BBQ masters from restaurants across the city meet over the flames of competition.

On Canada Day — Wednesday, July 1stMamie Talyor’s (www.mamietaylors.ca) and Re-Up BBQ (www.reupbbq.com) are joining forces to bring RibFest out of the backyard and into the street — opening the grill games to the public for the first time.

Starting at 4pm, competitors will fire up their grills in front of Mamie Taylor’s restaurant in Chinatown (251 E. Georgia St.) to win bragging rights and the coveted DIY RibFest trophy.

At 7 pm, a judging panel of three experts (Scout Magazine founder Andrew Morrison, Mamie Taylor’s Chef Tobias Grignon and RibFest founder Jeff Curry) will choose the winner. For $5, a limited number of guests can sample the competition ribs and vote for their favourite on a first-come-first-serve basis. (Judging spots are very limited.)

Throughout the afternoon and late into the evening, Mamie Taylor’s will be serving $12 rib plates, smoked by Re-Up and featuring Chef Tobias Grignon’s signature BBQ sauce, alongside coleslaw and macaroni salad. A $5 beer special is available courtesy of Strange Fellows Brewing (www.strangefellowsbrewing.com).

Mamie Taylor’s goes South by Southwest

New brunch menu makes a run for the border

The sun may rise in the east, but Mamie Taylor’s is looking west — Southwest, that is.

At the vanguard of Chinatown’s culinary renaissance, Mamie Taylor’s was the first to bring the delicacies of the Deep South to Vancouver’s brunch lovers. Now, the regional American restaurant is setting its sights on America’s Southwest by featuring a new brunch menu inspired by the sights, sounds and flavours of the U.S. border states.

Chef Tobias Grignon’s twist on regional specialties includes the Fried Green Tomato B.E.L.T.’s thick-cut hickory-smoked bacon, fried green tomato, arugula, fried egg and baconaise layered on sourdough toast; the Chili Braised Pork Shoulder skillet featuring Mexican-style pulled pork topped with a perfectly poached egg, hollandaise and house-made salsa verde and Ham Hock Hash that’s been braised for 16 hours, shredded and combined with baby potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and homemade herbed mustard.

Mamie Taylor’s hasn’t abandoned her roots, however. Guests will still be able to order Southern favourites such as the famous Biscuit Benny with thick cut bacon or vegetarian mushroom and kale; Fried Chicken and Waffles with Bourbon syrup, red cabbage slaw and pickled jalapeño; and the Steak and Grits — the only dish in the city that boasts traditional white, hominy grits, direct from down south.

Mamie Taylor’s brunch is served from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays

Where to Ring in 2014 – Vancouver

lumberjackNow that we’ve almost got Christmas out of the way, it is time to think about New Year’s Eve plans.  While I have spent the last few years at home (don’t worry not ALONE) there’s a few spots that are VERY tempting and I may just hit the town this year (WATCH OUT).  Here’s a few I’d consider and you should too.

Not So Fast and Mamie Taylor’s Serve Pierogies for Charity

Mamie TaylorsWhat better excuse to get out and try a new restaurant if you haven’t stopped by this place already than this tasty fundraising venture. From December 1-14 Mamie Taylor’s  restaurant has teamed up with not-for-profit Not So Fast and will serve an stellar  Pierogi dish with profits benefiting the “Inside The Box” Friday food program at the Strathcona Community Centre.

Chef Tobias Grignon was challenged to create a signature dish using frugal and healthy ingredients from a very short list of affordable dried goods, high-protein nuts and legumes, and seasonal vegetables – The Sunchoke and Goat Cheese Pierogies served on Braised Lentils with Roasted Kale and Walnuts ($18) dish were born.

The “Inside The Box” program provides essentials such as rice, beans or lentils and a recipe that features low-cost, seasonal produce such as kale and root vegetables.

Since the program began last month, more than 150 Downtown Eastside families have been helped with Not So Fast’s “Think Inside The Box” meal starters.
