WHAT? It’s almost April, and this is our Vancouver weather? Well, at least Vancouver is a city that knows how to function in the rain and whether it’s pouring or sunny, we’ve always got a ton to do to distract us. What to do this week? Here’s just a few suggestions.

March 30 Dining Out For Life


On Thursday, March 30, 2017, dine out for breakfast, lunch or dinner at participating restaurants and support people living with HIV/AIDS right here at home.

From Whistler to White Rock and across the Lower Mainland, our fantastic restaurant partners will contribute 25% of their food sales to A Loving Spoonful. All proceeds directly benefit the programs and services they provide free-of-charge, including:

  • An average 100,000 meals per year delivered by volunteers to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Metro Vancouver and surrounding regions
  • Nutritional counselling and meal planning
  • Easter Sundays where chefs donate their time to cook for a group of 50-60 people
  • Family Pantry Program where families receive fruits, vegetables, and other pantry essentials.
  • Snack Packs all clients receive: fresh fruit, yogurt, bread, juice, milk and more.


Vancouver International Burlesque Festival  March 31 and April 1

The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival  is Canada’s most prestigious and longest running burlesque festival. Showcasing the finest local and international talent since 2006, the VIBF brings global talent and local superstars to downtown Vancouver every spring.

Our City has a rich history of burlesque and cabaret dating back to the Golden Age of Burlesque.  Vancouver has honoured this colourful history by becoming an incubator of cabaret talent and innovation.  The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival was founded in 2006 with an aim to showcase this talent and expose the wonderful people of Vancouver to the intricate art of burlesque. Over the last 10 years this project has grown into a world class cabaret experience. Each year we produce two showcase events highlighting many of the world’s most sought after burlesque performers alongside International Legends from the Golden Age of Burlesque and the best of Vancouver’s Glitteratti. Angels of America Until April 23

Hailed as one of the most important works of 20th-century theatre, Angels in America is a timeless tale of companionship and abandonment that takes place when the personal became political. Set in New York City at the height of the Reagan era and the beginning of the AIDS crisis, Tony Kushner’s modern masterpiece contrasts the lives of five individuals struggling with identity issues alongside the crippling effects of stereotypes and an incurable diagnosis. Through spectacular staging, their stories intersect and crescendo in an exhilarating conclusion that will leave you breathless.


Sakura & Sake Menu

Market by Jean-Georges is celebrating the changing of the seasons with a sakura-inspired tasting menu, available from 1 to 30 April 2017. Created by executive chef Ken Nakano, the Sakura tasting menu pays homage to his Japanese heritage, and is inspired by his mother. Reservations are recommended, and can be made online or by calling 604 695 1115.

Sake-Based Cocktails

As an aperitif to the Sakura menu, guests are encouraged to try the sake-infused cocktails, such as the Sakura Sour made with Junmai Nama Nigori Sake, sakura-infused brandy, lychee, Japanese plum wine, and Strawberry Mah Kwan bitters.  Each cocktail uses award-winning Osake sake from Artisan SakeMaker, handcrafted on Granville Island by sakemaker Masa Shiroki. Movies at MARKET


Chocolat, The Hundred-Foot Journey and Entre les Bras to be screened alongside dinner at MARKET by Jean-Georges 

Movies at MARKET has announced its winter line up of mouth-watering movies to run between February and April 2015. Hosted by Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver in its private Blue Moon Theatre, an exclusive screening of Chocolat, The Hundred-Foot Journey and Entre les Bras will be shown followed by a themed menu created by Chef de Cuisine Montgomery Lau in MARKET by Jean-Georges. Space is limited and the events sell out quickly, so Movies at MARKET fans are urged to book now to avoid disappointment. 


Chocolat, February 13 & 14– A special Valentine’s Day edition of Movies at MARKET will take place on February 13 & 14. The most tempting of all sweets becomes the key weapon in a battle of sensual pleasure versus disciplined self-denial in Chocolat. Set in 1959, a mysterious woman named Vianne moves with her young daughter into a small French village, where much of the community’s activities are dominated by the local Catholic church. After settling into town, Vianne opens up a confectionery shop across the street from the house of worship. While the townspeople are supposed to be abstaining from worldly pleasures, Vianne tempts them with unusual and delicious chocolate creations. Chocolat features a distinguished supporting cast, including Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, and Johnny Depp. For the Valentine’s Day Movies at MARKET, tickets will be priced at $128 per person and include a glass of champagne, gourmet popcorn, movie and a Chocolat themed five-course dinner.

100 Foot Journey

The Hundred-Foot Journey, March 6 & 7 – Hassan Kadam is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa, settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant; the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren) gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own, escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Madame Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite, combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even she cannot ignore.


Entre les Bras, April 3 & 4 – On the French documentary Entre les Bras, the three-Michelin-stars French chef Michel Bras decides to hands his restaurant over to his son Sebastien who has been working with him for 15 years. Entre les Bras follows this gastronomic transition from father to son in the hilly landscape of Aubrac region of France, and provides a window into their family dynamics. Between Jonathan Nossiter’s Mondovino and Raymond Depardon’s La Vie Moderne, this documentary draws a moving and joyful portrait of this outstanding family devoted to the Haute Cuisine for three generations.

Following the movie, guests of the Movies at MARKET are escorted to MARKET by Jean-Georges’ main dining room to enjoy a dinner menu inspired by the film du jour. Movies at MARKET includes a glass of bubbly, gourmet popcorn, film screening, and a private four-course dinner. The doors open at 5:30 pm with a glass of bubbly upon arrival, and the event starts at 6:00 pm with the screening of the movie followed by dinner. Regular tickets (excluding the Valentine’s Day special) for Movies at MARKET are priced at $78 with wine pairings available for an additional $55 or $110. MARKET Launches Winemaker’s Series!


EVEN ALERT! Fine wine and great food comes together at MARKET by Jean-Georges this spring.

MARKET by Jean-Georges will be launching an exclusive new Winemaker’s Series this month, kicking off with the respected Caroline Frey from Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné and Château La Lagune. With a wide variety of wineries from around the world including Cannonball Wine Company and Louis Roederer Champagne, the series will offer something for everyone and all tastes.

On February 27, Caroline Frey, winemaker for Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné and Château La Lagune, will host a special winemaker’s dinner that celebrates the Burgundy and the Rhône Valley of France, their history, their terroir, their exceptional people and their exceptional wines. Cannonball Wine Gourmet Pizza & Wine Party, February 28

Mirroring the philosophy of the Cannonball Wine Company from California, this approachable event is serious about quality, honesty, and enjoying life. Hosted by CEO and Founding Partner, Yoav Gila, the event will take place in the MARKET lounge where for $35, guests will be treated to MARKET’s gourmet signature pizzas alongside Cannonball’s signature wines including their celebrated chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. Louis Roederer Champagne, March 8

In partnership with the Marquis Wine Cellars, MARKET by Jean-Georges will be hosting Frederic Rouzaud, Managing Director of Champagne at Louis Roederer for an evening of the fine food and bubbly. Well recognized as one of the finest champagne houses in the world, Louis Roederer will be pouring some of their best including their Brut Vintage 2007 and the Cristal 2006, a new vintage release for Spring 2014.The evening will begin with a seafood reception followed by a four course menu with select Jean-Georges dishes. Chateau Ste. Michelle Winemaker Dinner

chateau_ste_michelleMarquis Wine Cellars and Authentic Wine and Spirits have teamed up again to bring you a very special wine dinner.  On Sunday, November 10th we will be hosting a Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaker’s dinner at Market by Jean-Georges.  The guest of honour at this dinner will be Bob Bertheau who has been the head winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle since 2004.  Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington’s founding winery with some of the oldest and most acclaimed vineyards in the Columbia Valley.  Built in the 1912 the winery’s roots date back to the Repeal of Prohibition.  Ste. Michelle Vintners planted its first vines at Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972 and this is one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards in the state.  Today the winery owns more than 3,500 prime vineyard acres in the Columbia Valley.

Squeeze the most out of Summer with the Pressé Summer Series at MARKET by Jean-Georges

ImageProxyWith summer in full swing, starting Friday, July 26, MARKET by Jean-Georges will be hosting a series of fresh and fun events to ensure that we all make the most out of our summer nights. The Pressé Summer Series with DJ Charles Blair, complimentary appetizers from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, and drink specials, including a featured pressé for $6.00 and a Grey Goose cocktails roster for $9.00 each. The evenings run from 4:00 through 8:00 pm with the final night of the series on September 13, 2013.

Fresh-pressed and inspired by a favourite French cafe drink, the pressé is traditionally crafted tableside at sidewalk cafes in France. A simple but balanced blend of vodka, fresh-pressed fruit, sugar and club soda, the pressé is the perfect way to celebrate summer and all its bounty.

The Pressé Summer Series will kick off on the patio with DJ Charles Blair spinning some hot summer beats, signature menu items from the MARKET by Jean-Georges lounge menu, Grey Goose cocktails, and the Citrus Cherry Pressé as the feature pressé.
