Memphis Blues Throws Its Weight Behind a Great Cause

Both Vancouver Memphis Blues Barbeque House Locations to Participate in ‘Dining Out For Life’ on Thursday, March 29th

George Siu and Park Heffelfinger, owners of the Memphis Blues Barbeque House group of restaurants, are pleased to announce that both the Broadway (1465 Broadway Avenue, Vancouver) and Commercial (1342 Commercial Drive, Vancouver) restaurants will be participating in this year’s Dining Out For Life on Thursday, March 29th, an annual charity event that raises money for AIDS service organizations.

Over 250 restaurants from Whistler to White Rock and across theFraserValleywill contribute 25% of their sales that day to people living with HIV/AIDS.  Participating restaurants have raised over $3 million for HIV/AIDS support services over 16 years.

Dining Out For Life is BC’s largest restaurant fundraiser, benefiting A Loving Spoonful and Friends For Life.

Numerous advances have been made in the field of HIV/AIDS research, helping people live happier and longer.  This progress could not have been possible without the support that comes through individual Canadians, and through organizations like Dining Out For Life.

George says, “I’m fortunate to not have had friends pass on from this terrible disease, however I do have friends that live with HIV every day. This disease has no boundaries, does not discriminate and has taken far too many lives. Whatever we can contribute to help find a cure we are happy to do so.

Park continues, “I have lost some great friends to AIDS in the past and have some who are living with it.  Anything I can do to help Canadians fighting this disease or assisting those that live with it is simply the right thing to do.

Invite your friends to Dine Out this March 29th.  For more information, as well as a c0mplete list of participating restaurants, please visit DiningOutForLife.com/Vancouver.

About Memphis Blues Barbeque House:

Launched by George Siu and Park Heffelfinger in Vancouverin September 2001, Memphis Blues Barbeque House celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, after serving tens of thousands of happy customers from all across the globe, winning dozens of awards, and garnering citywide and national acclaim – all in the name of spreading the juicy gospel of succulent, slow-roasted Southern baah-bee-cue.  Innovators from the start, they were the first casual self-serve restaurant in the city with a sophisticated twist to what is now a celebrated, but reasonably-priced wine list, recognized by Wine Access Magazine as being one of the ’50 Best Wine Restaurants in Canada’ three years in a row.  Memphis Blues also boasts one of the most extensive Bourbon selections in the city!

The boys have also released a best-selling cookbook, Memphis Blues Barbeque House – Bringin’ Southern BBQ Home (Whitecap Books, 2008), and have just released a series of unique Memphis Blues Rubs and Sauces. A sixth store is set to open in downtown Vancouver in May, and further expansion is planned for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in the coming months.  Memphis Blues has also extensively grown their catering division, and are a sought-after partner for weddings, corporate events, and more.  Now let’s eat!

Park and George Head to the Ring to face Challengers Re-Up BBQ and the ‘Recipe To Riches’ Winner

“I feel good about this.  I really do.  It was important to get back to the old country,” says Park Heffelfinger, co-owner of the beloved Memphis Blues Barbeque House, as he and his partner George Siu step off the plane fromKinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, surrounded by reporters, friends, family and devoted fans.

Don’t worry, my friend.  It’s in the bag,” comforts George.  “Float like a butterfly….

Indeed, it is this unwavering determination, and singular dedication to their craft that has carried them so far in such a short time.  These two heavyweight barbeque champions have just returned from an inspirational culinary pilgrimage to Mai 20 Stadium, the site of the legendary ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ – the 1974 boxing event that pitted former champion and challenger Muhammad Ali against then champion George Forman.

We needed to get back to our roots.  To remember that it was watching this powerful story of strength and fortitude; of the old guard versus the young turks, that was the launching point for Memphis Blues,” states Park.

A reporter at back of the throng suggested, “But wasn’t it your experience at Memphis In May in 2001 that inspired the restaurants?

SOME would say that,” continues Park.  “But it REALLY started back in ’74.  Since then, it’s always been about courage and strength.”

It has been just over 10 years since the visionary pair brought authentic Southern barbeque to the vegan wilds ofVancouver.  And their food has been embraced by customers and fans in their home city and far beyond.  Numerous accolades and awards have come their way, and thousands of stomachs have been succulently satiated.  But next week, they face perhaps their biggest challenge yet….

On Wednesday, February 22nd at 6pm, the boys will re-enter the ring of destiny at another world-famous hall of battle.  At one of the signature opening events for the 2012 BC Home and Garden Show at BC Place Stadium, Memphis Blues Barbeque House will pit its acclaimed pulled pork against not just one, but two challengers for the title:  the Re-Up BBQ, and Robert Luft of Food Network Canada’s Recipe to Riches fame.  This battle will take place at the Outdoor Entertaining Stage, and will feature a panel of celebrity foodie judges.

You know, I respect what the challengers are doing, but I have to tell you – we are not interested in ‘cheffing it up’.  What we do is honest, authentic, and has the weight of more than 10 years of experience, and satisfied customers behind it,” declares George.  “We really believe in what we do.

And with the continued desire to spread the good word about traditional Southern BBQ, on 12:30pm on Saturday, February 25th, Park and George will return to the Outdoor Entertaining Stage for a featured presentation on ribs and brisket, and tips on how you can turn your own barbecue into a smoker.  Memphis Blues Barbeque House will also maintain a booth at the show for its entire run – from Wednesday to Sunday – featuring their all-new line up of Rubs and Sauces – perfect for the BBQ lover at home!

They told me you could cook, George!” shouts Park as they get ready for their final week of training.  “Yep…” replies George.  “I sure can.

Has it been 10 delicious years already?   It was in September of 2001 that local boys George Siu opened the doors of the first Memphis Blues Barbeque House onBroadway Avenue inVancouver.  The dazzling duo has gone on to serve tens of thousands of happy customers from all across the globe, winning dozens of awards, and garnering citywide and national acclaim – all in the name of spreading the juicy gospel of succulent, slow-roasted Southern baah-bee-cue.

The passion-fueled restaurant was an innovator from the start, and continues to be to this day.  Their first taste of recognition in their home city was winning the ‘Best New Casual Restaurant’ Award from the prestigious Vancouver Magazine, the first year after they opened.  Indeed, they were the first casual self-serve restaurant in the city with a sophisticated twist to what is now a celebrated, but reasonably-priced wine list, recognized by Wine Access Magazine as being one of the ’50 Best Wine Restaurants in Canada’ three years in a row.  Memphis Blues also boasts one of the most extensive Bourbon selections in the city!  Numerous other awards followed, including nods from the Georgia Straight, the Westender, North Shore News,Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Magazine, Wine Access, En Route Magazine, and many, more.

In their 10th year of mouth-watering service, George and Park are preparing for further adventures.  After the successful issue of their best-selling cookbook, Memphis Blues Barbeque House – Bringin’ Southern BBQ Home (Whitecap Books, 2008), the pair are preparing to release a series of unique Memphis Blues Rubs and Sauces (to be available at the restaurants this Winter), and are planning a series of interesting menu additions, including a yet-to-be-named food challenge to be unleashed on an unsuspecting Vancouver in the next few months.

With its roots in Vancouver, you can now satisfy your cravings for their signature pulled pork, falling-off-the-bone ribs, hearty beef brisket, flavourful deep-fried catfish (did I also mention their amazing cornbread, baked beans, creamy homemade slaw…?) at not just one, but SIX family-owned locations across BC.  A new store is set to open in downtownVancouverbefore Christmas, and further expansion is planned forAlberta,Saskatchewan, andManitobain the coming months.  Memphis Blues has also extensively grown their catering division, and are a sought-after partner for weddings, corporate events, and more.  Now let’s eat!

As they famously said many years ago, “this is messy food folks.  Dive in and eat with your hands.”

The TASSIMO System: How it works…

· Innovative home brewing system by Bosch: Each T DISC contains ground coffee, tea, chocolate or concentrated milk product, and is sealed to protect the flavours inside. All the brewing happens inside the T DISC’s ‘mini brewing-chamber’. Your drink pours directly from the T DISC into the cup so you can prepare different drinks, one after the other with no taste transfer.

· TASSIMO uses Barcode Technology
· Each beverage has its own single-serve T DISC equipped with a unique barcode. the barcode tells the TASSIMO brewer exactly what it needs to know to brew the perfect cup. The brewer adjusts the temperature, water volume and brew time according to these precise instructions – all at the touch of a button.

· Brand Variety
· T DISCs come in NABOB, MAXWELL HOUSE, CADBURY, and TWININGS®, to name a few of the varieties, and can make over 30 beverages, from coffee, tea and espresso to cappuccino, chai tea latte and hot chocolate.
