Celebrate Sauvignon Blanc Day on 5 May

Raise a  Glass of Sauvignon Blanc This Friday

One of my favourite grapes in Sauvignon Blanc, perhaps because it goes so well with my favourite food, oysters! This year International Sauvignon Blanc Day takes place on 5 May 2017. We’ve partnered with the New Zealand Winegrowers  to assist with a social media campaign to raise awareness of the day and encourage consumers to celebrate the country’s flagship wine.

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a $1.3 billion dollar export earner, massively contributing to the success of New Zealand wine overseas! This Friday you can choose to purchase a bottle and sip at home or join one of the restaurants participating in a special promo for Sauvignon Blanc.

The Great New Zealand Wine Tiki Tour

New Zealand Wine Visits Vancouver May 5, 2016

New Zealand is my birthplace and I have returned on far too few occasions and I’m left with a gap in my heart each time of think of my home country. I miss my relatives (four generations are still living as my grandparents are in their 90’s) and all the great food and wine that occurs when we are together.

The last time I visited New Zealand I visited many cellar doors in Hawkes Bay where the majority of the extended family lives now, and have been to a few on Waiheke Island, but I have yet to venture further south to explore the many wineries that visit Canada during the spring wine tours. Fortunately the upcoming May New Zealand Wine Tiki Tour in Vancouver on May 5, 2016 provides a tour of the entire country’s wine regions.

Wineries flying over this time include those from the east, west north and south, and it isn’t all about Sauvignon Blanc , AT ALL, or even Pinot Noir. I can’t wait to sample Syrah, Pinot Gris, Gewurtz and some bigger reds.

New Zealand Wine

While you are celebrating NZ Wine by drinking Sauvignon Blanc, or visiting the New Zealand Wine Tour I highly encourage you to pay some attention to Sacred Hill Winery, one I recently visited while in Hawkes Bay.  One of my favourite wines in the world (yes, the WORLD) comes from here, the Rifleman’s Chardonnay; proving, once again, NZ is way more than Sauvignon Blanc.

New Zealand Wine

I’ve stood among the vines in the Rifleman’s Chardonnay is grown, a spectacular site overlooking the white cliffs of the Tutaekuri river. The soil is a mixture of 10,000 year old volcanic ash and deep red metals overlaying limestone, creating low yields and extremely concentrated fruit flavours.  The vineyard is planted 22 year old Mendoza vines and the resulting wine is outstanding. I pray they bring it with them on the tour.

Invivo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – 2011

From 100 per cent Marlborough Fruit this pale yellow wine has aromas of grass, gooseberries, citrus and tropical fruit.  On the palate the wine has concentrated tropical notes, citrus, minerality and noticeable but balanced acidity.  It’s a richer style of Sauv Blanc produced with lees stiring.  I love pairing with oysters, grilled scallops and ceviche, or sipping solo thinking of the ripening vineyards.

Pinot Noir – New Zealand

A Thinking Party

The most significant event on the New Zealand wine calendar. It only happens once every three years and it’s on again from the 28th to 31st January, in Wellington, next year.

Registrations have opened, so all you have to do to secure your place is click here.

There will be 112 wineries across 5 Pinot Noir producing regions who will offer over 300 wines for tasting and savouring alongside the wild foods of New Zealand.

You won’t just be eating and drinking though. Pinot Chair Alastair Maling MW suggests while there will be plenty of splendid Pinot poured he expects everyone to contribute to the talk.

“Most events have speakers where the audience just listens. Our event will have the audience debating the relevance of natural wines – or if funky means faulty, or whether terroir is more about marketing than place.”

“Kiwi winemakers love a contentious topic and we’ve sorted out some beauts.”

Naturally the international guests will be invited to join in and we can “kiss and make up” over a glass of wine.

“We have set up three days of Pinot workshops focussing on our five major Pinot regions which will unearth the stories behind our world class Pinot Noirs – but the regionality doesn’t stop at wine.

The regions have identified their very best food producers to help create memorable lunches. Each day the lunch will focus on a region. It may be salmon from Marlborough or thyme scented rabbit pie from Central Otago, lamb from the Waipara Valley, goat cheese from Nelson or crayfish from Wairarapa.

It’s all about showing the world the very best of New Zealand.

Speakers already confirmed include Jasper Morris MW, Matt Kramer, Lisa Perotti Brown MW, Tim Atkin MW, Australia’s Mike Bennie and Ned Goodwin MW from Japan. The event will be opened by Sam Neill, movie star and proprietor of Two Paddocks.

Pinot Noir is being picked and made into wine throughout the country at the moment; this is being recorded by the participating wineries. The resulting images will capture the spirit of New Zealand Pinot Noir at the event.

The first Pinot Noir Event was held in 2001. It was set up by a group of dedicated Pinot Noir producers (under the chairmanship of Richard Riddiford of Palliser Estate) to explore and celebrate the grape in New Zealand.
Held every three years in Wellington, Pinot Noir NZ has established a dedicated audience throughout the world and previous attendees include Jancis Robinson MW, Allen Meadows, Jamie Goode, Max Allen, Oz Clarke and James Halliday.

Ruth Pretty Catering has always pulled together a culinary programme including the very best Wellington restaurants using New Zealand’s finest produce. The event is supported by New Zealand Winegrowers who regard it as a hero event in the New Zealand wine calendar.

CEO Philip Gregan says Pinot Noir NZ is a springboard for overseas visitors to experience the whole of the New Zealand wine story as they often continue their New Zealand trip to absorb other regions and grape varieties.

Sam Neill opens Pinot Noir NZ 2013

Sam Neill, winemaker, movie god and raconteur will open Pinot Noir NZ 2013 in Wellington next year, Chairman of the Board behind the event, Alastair Maling MW, announced as he opened registrations for the event.

“Sam was our first choice and we’re tickled pink because he’ll set the tone of “serious fun” over the four day event.”

Star of movies such as Jurassic Park, Dean Spanley and Reilly Ace of Spies, New Zealand born Sam established Pinot Noir producer Two Paddocks in Central Otago.

“The quality of Two Paddocks wine and his attachment to it, make Sam an optimistic man. He is inclined to see the glass in his right hand as never half empty, by the simple expedient of ensuring his left hand always holds a full bottle,” says Alastair.

“Sam gets his hands dirty and we’re trying to uncover the real work behind New Zealand’s fantastic Pinot Noirs which have beguiled the world.”

Pinot Noir NZ 2013 is the fifth such wine event and it has been called “one of the world’s most impressive wine events”.

“While we still set out to impress the look and feel is “kiwi laid back elegance” and we hope to engage our visitors with challenging talk, memorable food and of course unbeatable New Zealand Pinots,” Alastair says.

Registrations for Pinot Noir NZ 2013 are now open.

“This is exciting stuff. We have set up four days of Pinot workshops focusing on our five major Pinot regions and asking people to unearth the stories from the people behind our world class Pinot Noirs.”

Speakers already confirmed include Jasper Morris MW, Matt Kramer, Lisa Perotti Brown MW and Australia’s Mike Bennie.

More than 100 New Zealand Pinot producers have signed up to show their wares in Wellington from 28th – 31st January.

The first Pinot Noir Event was held in 2001. It was set up by a group of dedicated Pinot Noir producers (under the chairmanship of Richard Riddiford of Palliser Estate) to explore and celebrate the grape in New Zealand.
