Location: 425 Middle Bench Road North, Naramata Bench, Penticton, BC

Vineyards: 110 estate acres (60% Naramata Bench; 40% East Bank Osoyoos)

Owners: Tony Holler, Ian Sutherland and Barrie Sali

Winemakers: Ian Sutherland, Stefan Arnason and Nadine Allander

Viticulturist: Valeria Tait

Visitors can tour the barrel hall, sample Poplar Grove’s award- winning wines and enjoy a picnic on the viewing deck overlooking Penticton’s scenic waterfront. Artisanal cheeses, meats & breads are available. The restaurant and professional kitchen are part of the phase two opening and are expected to be ready early spring 2012.

The winery was designed to intertwine with the natural landscape and topography. Poplar trees, lavender, iris and Russian sage are being planted on the property in order to incorporate the local flora into the winery landscaping. Within the new estate vineyards, Poplar Grove planted foundation plants to harmonize with biodynamic principals, including hard fescue, red clover and bluegrass. The vineyard edges are lined with crested wheatgrass, wild mustard and annual rye. The decision to move towards a biodynamic estate vineyard stemmed from evidence that quality could be increased through the use of biodynamic principles that add an extra dimension to a natural farming process.

“Tony Holler said, “We are thrilled with our new winery! The whole team at Poplar Grove has been involved in every aspect of the design and function of this exciting project. Our goal has been to build an iconic winery on our new location on Munson Mountain. The new property looks over both the Okanagan and Skaha lakes; from the viewing deck we can see the waterfront from Penticton to Peachland. This building is the legacy to our journey to produce world class wines from our estate vineyards in the Okanagan Valley.”

Ian Sutherland recently stated, “The best part of my day is showing people around our new winery. I couldn’t be more pleased with how it has turned out. I love it when people drop in for a glass of Merlot.”

About Poplar Grove Winery

One of the original 5 wineries on the Naramata Bench, Poplar Grove began in 1993 as a boutique winery. Quite literally a “garagiste”, Ian Sutherland began making wines out of his garage. In 2007, Tony Holler became majority owner and president. Ian Sutherland and Barrie Sali complete the newly defined ownership team. Tony Holler & his wife Barb Holler brought with them 110 acres of prime vineyard throughout the Okanagan, which allows Poplar Grove to produce 100% estate grown top quality wines. Over the years, Polar Grove Winery has gained a far-reaching reputation for producing quality wines and winning numerous medals – three of which include the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence (2002 Cabernet Franc and 2007 Syrah) and a gold medal at the 2011 Decanter World Wine Awards (Syrah 2008).

About Biodynamic Farming
Biodynamic farming principals focus on a holistic approach to planet earth. The term “biodynamic” is derived from the Greek ‘bio’ meaning life and ‘dynamic’ meaning changing force. A biodynamic winery employs a natural approach to farming that involves attaining a healthy living soil and balanced vines that are in harmony with nature without upsetting the delicate balance of nature. A biodynamic winery uses only natural pest repellents and no synthetic herbicides.

One of the goals at Poplar Grove Winery is to create a positive difference in the local community. Each year, the Poplar Grove team selects a charity to support; this year’s focus is the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS). For the 2010 season, Poplar Grove’s tasting room team requested a tasting room donation with all money raised going to SOWINS. Through the generosity of our 2010 tasting room visitors, on Dec 15, the Poplar Grove team presented the South Okanagan Women in Need Society with a cheque for $10,000.00. The money raised will go a long way to making it a warmer winter for the clients of the South Okanagan Women in Need Society.

Ian Sutherland, Founder & Executive Winemaker of Poplar Grove, recently stated “we are thrilled to be able to support SOWINS with the charitable donation that originated from guests sharing wine in our tasting room. The real credit goes to our tasting room staff for their good work and to our guests for their generosity.”

Tony Holler, President & majority owner of Poplar Grove Winery, said that “through bringing awareness to this important cause, we are hoping that we can encourage others to donate to SOWINS in efforts to make it a warmer winter for the clients of the South Okanagan Women in Need Society.”

Donna Henningson, Resources Coordinator, South Okanagan Women in Need Society, in accepting the donation said that “the crew at Poplar Grove and, in particular, the women in the tasting room really showed a lot of heart and initiative in asking for donations to SOWINS this past season. And it has paid off big time for us. Proceeds paid for our 2010 kids Christmas party with Santa, which saw 100 women and children. Poplar Grove proceeds will also pay for household extras to improve the Transition House. We’re very thrilled. Operational funds are tight this year. This money has come at a very good time. Poplar Grove: you are angels!”

About Poplar Grove
Poplar Grove is an international award winning winery located on the slopes of the Naramata Bench in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. The winery focus is on Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and the aptly named Legacy, their premium blend. Poplar Grove began in 1993 as a small winery in the Naramata Bench. Quite literally a “garagiste”, Ian Sutherland began making wines out of his garage. Over the years, Poplar Grove gained a far-reaching reputation for producing quality wines and winning numerous medals – two of which were the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence (2002 Cabernet Franc and 2007 Syrah). In 2007, Tony Holler became majority owner and president. Ian Sutherland and Barrie Sali complete the newly defined ownership team. Mr. Holler brought with him 110 acres of prime vineyards throughout the Okanagan – which allows Poplar Grove to produce 100% estate grown top quality wines.

About South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS)

Since 1981, the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) has helped regional women and children facing domestic abuse get on with their lives. SOWINS does so by providing empowerment through short-term housing, support to families, and the building of awareness in the communities of the South Okanagan. SOWINS goal is to eradicate abuse. Donations can be made to SOWINS by going to the website www.sowins.com.

Pinot Gris 2009

Tasting Room Release: October 1, 2010

The 2009 Pinot Gris shows light straw color in the glass and first aromas evoke memories of baked apple and Grand Marnier. Light to medium in body, the first taste brings out fresh peach and quince. Resting in the glass this Pinot Gris begins to show notes of crème caramel and melon. The clean crisp acidity is the perfect foundation for a foodie wine; something rich and succulent and enjoyed very slowly. Linger with your lover over the finish.

Wine Club

Our first annual Wine Club BBQ was a smashing success! Chefs Roger Planiden and (our very own) Laurie Barnes rolled out a fabulous feast of grilled salmon, hand-made gourmet burgers and fresh, haute salads. The ever effervescent Poplar Grove staff poured our tastiest wines (including our secret dessert Riesling) while we danced the night away on the edge of the lake.

Thank you to everyone who came and spent the evening with us and if you were not able to attend we hope that you can make it to the next Poplar Grove Wine Club BBQ in August 2011, which will be at our new winery…

Legacy 2004, 1.5L Magnum
The Big Boys are always a favorite with us here at the winery. They look sensational as display bottles in the cellar or as a show stopper at a dinner party, but ultimately its the wine in the bottle that tells the story.

The Legacy 2004 is a big brooding blend of Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv and Malbec that shows strong black berry fruit, laced with spice and sage. There’s a lot going on as the ripe tannins are becoming silky smooth with age. We think it is showing well now and will age gracefully for the next 10-15 years. Already a favorite with our clients this is the first release of the Magnum format. Price of $150.00 includes a wooden display box. Contact the Winery to assure your allocation.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES – POPLAR GROVE

Poplar Grove Pinot Gris 2008: Floral and quince on the nose. Honey, apple and lemon pie in the first sip with hints of mineral as it lingers in the mouth. A good crisp finish makes this a foodie wine, ready to take on the creations of the hidden chef in all of us.

Poplar Grove Chardonnay 2008: This classic Chardonnay has aromas of green apples, peaches, & a hint of cashew nuttiness. Nectarine, honey & pear flavours arrive on the palate. Mineral & citrus notes come through on the finish. 20% of the grapes were barrel aged, which adds a hint of toast & caramel while the stainless portion brings on solid fruit & clean acidity.

Poplar Grove Merlot 2008: Cherry & cocoa aromas come through on the nose. Rich, long-lasting tannins overlay full-bodied Italian plum & blackberry flavours. A touch of spice appears on the finish. This Merlot is complex, round & exhibits well-balanced fruit, tannins & acidity. Enjoy now & take note that it will continue to improve with cellar aging. (shown, but not served)

Poplar Grove The Legacy 2005: The strength of this signature blend begins with the elegance of Merlot. The power of Cabernet Franc and the richness of Cabernet Sauvignon bring out a medley of blackberry, plum & spice. Malbec picks up the backbeat in the mid-palate. Ripe tannins build length in the finish. As big and brooding as it is now, it will develop gracefully in the years to come.

DOMAINE NOTES

Poplar Grove Winery is located on the slopes of the Naramata Bench about 10 minutes from downtown Penticton. In 1993, Poplar Grove began as the quintessential garage winery and has recently entered an era of reinvention.

Poplar Grove is planning a new showcase winery on Munson Mountain, situated at the gateway to the Naramata Bench. The new estate will welcome visitors with breathtaking views overlooking Lake Okanagan. Wine lovers will be able to tour the barrel caves, enjoy a picnic on the viewing deck and sample Poplar Grove’s signature wines. As they move into their 16th year, their continuing goal is to produce world-class wines from family-owned estate grown fruit.
