Snacks For Kids Fundraiser – Proceeds from Dinners at all Flying Pigs and WildTale – Oct 5

100 percent of proceeds from dinner food sales at WildTale Restaurant in Yaletown as well as its sister restaurants, the Flying Pig locations, will go toward this important cause Oct 5 dinner. Firefighters themselves will be on hand to greet guests. Vancouver Firefighters Charities provide nutritious snacks to Vancouver kids in need throughout the school year.

Last week I started doing Thanksgiving prep for our annual dinner and stopped in at Kin’s Farm Market in City Square.

I picked up a big bag of mostly local produce; I did have to grab a couple California peaches, but the apples, squash, grapes, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant are all coming in from local farms.

Windset Peppers, big and small are also a great value, cut them up for spaghetti sauce or stuff them with rice and veggies.

I picked up at big bag of goodies for just over $35 and we now have 2 $35 Kin’s Farm Market gift certificates so you can do the same. In the meantime, I thought I’d offer up a why to use up some of that leftover turkey. Just add a wee bit more mayo if your turkey is a little dry. White and dark meat mixed works best in this and feel free to put a scoop on your salad greens, spread it atop crackers or use as sandwich filling.

Turkey Waldorf Salad

2 cups left over turkey torn in pieces
1/3 cup plain yogurt
1/3 cup mayonnaise
3 TBSP Cranberry Sauce (if you have it)
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 cup seedless grapes, halved crosswise
1 apple cut in small cubs
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (3 ounces)
3 tablespoons drained capers, chopped
salt and pepper to taste

Stir together yogurt, mayonnaise, and mustard and add in turkey and remaining ingredients and salt and pepper to taste.

PR – Falling in Love with Harvest Season at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards

Summer’s nearly over but harvest time is just around the corner and the change in season marks a happy time of celebrations, family-style dining and making the most of the South Okanagan’s natural bounty at Tinhorn Creek.

Communal dinners, vineyard hikes and wine festival events will all be held amongst the spectacular backdrop of Tinhorn Creeks unique wine country terroir this fall. The annual Okanagan Fall Wine Festival kicks off on October 3rd 2013 and Tinhorn Creek Vineyards and Miradoro Restaurant will be taking part in this year’s festivities to help celebrate the local wine industry.

On October 4th 2013, Miradoro’s Executive Chef Jeff Van Geest will be taking on Chef Adam Pegg, from Vancouver’s award-winning La Quercia restaurant, in a light-hearted Chef vs Chef dinner. Each chef will cook alternate courses and all dishes will be paired with fine wines from Tinhorn Creek’s premier Oldfield Series. Winemaker Sandra Oldfield, assistant winemaker Korol Kuklo and viticulturist Andrew Moon will guide diners through the evening’s pairings.

Combining Pegg’s love of Italian food with Geest’s passion for local produce and Mediterranean flavours, the Chef vs Chef menu features the very best of fall food such as classic antipasti, heirloom tomatoes and burrata, whole fire-roasted suckling pig and olive oil hazelnut cake with pine mushroom gelato. The meal takes place between 6-10pm and tickets cost $125 pp; call 250-498-3742 to reserve a place.

Dig deeper into the world of winemaking this harvest season with a vineyard hike and lunch on October 7th, 8th and 9th 2013, as part of the Fall Wine Festival. Proprietor Kenn Oldfield will be leading a behind-the-vines tour of Tinhorn Creek’s Golden Mile vineyard, giving a unique glimpse into vineyard practices, grape varietals and terroir during a fun and educational hike through the vineyard. After the hike the 20 guests enjoy a well-earned lunch and leave full of new found knowledge and good food. Tickets cost $35pp and are available from www.tinhorn.com.

Thanksgiving, on October 14th, is a great time to get together with family and friends but the celebrations don’t have to stop once the holiday is over. Every Tuesday, from October 15th until December 17th 2013, Miradoro Restaurant will be hosting communal table dinners that offer family-style food. Chef Jeff Van Geest and his team showcase the best local seasonal produce during a multi-course dinner, all enjoyed in the company of old and new friends. Each week’s communal table dinner is a different theme, highlighting a region, style of cuisine or showcasing a delicious local seasonal ingredient. Tuesday night communal table dinners take place between 6.30-9.30pm and cost $30pp; call 250-498-3742 to book your place at the table.

Thanksgiving at The Irish Heather Long Table Series

The spectacular September weather might make it feel like summer, but the calendar says that Thanksgiving is just around the corner and with only two weeks until the big day, it’s an ideal time to pre order the centrepiece of your feast.

Along with locally-raised turkeys from Rossdown Farms, Big Lou’s Butcher Shop will also be offering smoked Sloping Hills Hams, Big Lou’s signature turduckens and complete thanksgiving dinners served hot and ready to take home and serve.

Our Rossdown Farms local, free range turkeys are a perfect starting point for building your Thanksgiving dinner and will be available for $4.65/lb. Pre-ordering is always recommended to avoid disappointment.

Big Lou’s Turducken is made with Rossdown Farms Turkey, Rossdown Farms Chicken, Yarrow Meadows Duck and pork sausage. They are available for $14.00 per lb, oven ready and must be pre-ordered by Monday October 1st, to be ready for Thanksgiving weekend.

We will also be offering smoked Sloping Hills Hams if you want a non-poultry centrepiece or are looking for a second protein for a big feast.

If you don’t want to do any cooking at all, we’re also offering full Turkey or Ham dinners hot and ready to go. The meals include your choice of: Rossdown Farms Turkey with Italian sausage stuffing and a  full selection of classic sides like: pomme puree, seasonal carrots, beets, brussel sprouts, gravy and cranberry jelly.

The meal comes family and costs $175 and feed a group of 6-8. These meals must be pre-ordered by Monday, October 1st for pickup on Thanksgiving Weekend.
