Bartender Justin Taylor at The Cascade Room – Burrard Gimlet
If you been following the Hand Crafted Spirits Show, you may have caught a few segments where Joe Leary and I search for tasty cocktails on TSN1410. This week we were off for a quick lunch and cocktail sampling in East Van.
Main Street’s Cascade Room is now home to Justin Taylor, who’s been a fixture behind the bar at places such at the Four Seasons, and recently Boulevard at The Sutton Place Hotel. He impressed us with his Burrard Gimlet and let us in on what the Cascade Room’s been up to this fall.

Now this sounds like fun! Even if you’re not part Scottish!
The Cascade Room (2616 Main Street) is marking the occasion of Robert Burns Day (a celebration of the life and poetry of Scottish poet Robert Burns) on Monday, January 25, with a delicious Scottish-inspired evening featuring bagpipes, whisky, haggis and other treats (including deep fried Mars bars!). This is the seventh year The Cascade Room has hosted a Robert Burns’ Night event.
The celebration will kick off at 6 pm on January 25, with the ‘piping of the haggis,’ which will see local bagpiper Matt Dolan pipe in the haggis with The Cascade Company’s very own Dougie Stewart (bartender from El Camino’s) addressing the Haggis.
A special three-course dinner menu will be on offer throughout the evening: Starter – Cock-a-Leekie Soup; Main – Traditional Haggis with ‘Neeps an’ Tatties; and for dessert — a Deep Fried Mars Bar. The menu is priced at $29 (a la carte available as well).
The evening will feature live Celtic music, perfect for raising a glass from the bar — which will be offering specials from the evening’s sponsor, Glenlivet, along with a cask of Scotch Ale from Main Street Brewing.
Guests are welcome to Robert Burns’ Night at The Cascade Room, on a first come, first served basis.
If you are looking for more treats than tricks this Halloween,
The Cascade Room, The Union, El Camino’s and Charlie’s Little Italian are all featuring their Halloween promotions on Saturday, October 31 — with lots of delicios food & drink specials.
Instagramers can also win by dressing up and snapping a picture with one of the restaurants’ scary drink specials (‘shocktails’) and then posting to Instagram, tagged with the corresponding ‘shocktail’ hashtag for each restaurant (i.e #elcaminosshocktails, #unionshocktails, #charliesshocktails, etc.). The restaurants’ followers will vote on the best costume and the winner will receive a $75 gift certificate for a Cascade Company restaurant.

For the sixth year in a row, we’re bringing together some of the city’s most prominent chefs and mixologists and the region’s best growers and producers for a fun night of B.C. wine and beer pairings, cocktails, and tasting stations! This year is especially exciting as we are celebrating our 10th anniversary!
Join us on a culinary adventure as guests can wander from kitchen to kitchen and watch the chefs in action. Each chef will be paired with a local B.C. grower and producer to celebrate the best of the season. Throughout the night you’ll get to try dishes from more than fifteen of the city’s best chefs! Each chef station is also paired with a carefully selected B.C. winery. Wine pairings provided by Constellation Brands.
Here’s a sneak preview of just a few of our participating restaurants!
This is it! The Carrotmob is on, and we are mobbing The Cascade Room with a fabulous “Buycott” in return for going green!
All you have to do, the ONLY thing, is to come down to The Cascade Room on Wednesday JUNE 27th and purchase something – perhaps their cleverly crafted culinary creations or custom cocktails – and EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR spent that Wednesday will be put towards improving the energy efficiency of that shop!
So what is The Cascade Room offering in return for a mob of customers Carrotmob style?
– Replacing their current dishwashers with new energy star models
– Getting an oil filtration system to cut deep-fryer oil use in half while prolonging equipment life (www.vitooil.com)
– Starting an “ask for water” policy to avoid wasting our most valuable resource
– Implementing a composting system to eliminate waste from ending up in a landfill.
Stay tuned for details on the fun prizes and live entertainment that we’ll have lined up for the event!
Hmmm… Drink cocktails to save the planet anyone? 😉
The Mount Pleasant BIA will be hosting The Smoking Sausage BBQ Cook-Off on Saturday, July 30th 2011 from 5 pm to 9 pm in the alley west of Main between Broadway and West 8th Avenue (100 Block E Broadway). The Event is co-hosted by Livable Laneways and VIVA Vancouver’s PATHS TO PLAZAS Laneway Markets Event Series.
Foodies are invited to sample the unique creations by Burgoo Bistro, The Cascade Room, Hyde Restaurant, The Rumpus Room and Eight ½ Restaurant Lounge and vote on who can take home the bragging rights and trophy. Reminiscent of back street pedestrian oasis found around the world, though perhaps not until now in Vancouver, the laneway will be transformed for the evening, into an almost lounge-like atmosphere, with music, pop up theatre and a night market.
All sausages will be the creation of Main Street’s own Master Sausage Maker Drews Driessen of D-Original Sausage Co. in accordance with recipes supplied by the participating restaurants. Condiments will enhance the uniqueness of their offering. Cobs Bread is donating all the buns and giving away tasty samples. Cuppa Joe and Starbucks Coffee will be supplying free coffee.
For a $3 dollar donation you are invited to join in the fun and sample delicious BBQ Sausages from each participating restaurant, while quantities last, with all proceeds going to the Vancouver Food Bank. Vote for your favourite sausage and you get a chance to win a $25.00 restaurant gift certificate as well as an amazing taste experience.
