TWG Valentine’s Day Menu and Treats

TWG Valentine’s Day – Take Time For Tea

Got plans for Valentine’s Day yet? On Friday we checked out Chef Cliff Hohl’s latest menu at TWG Tea and left very impressed with just how gorgeous and delicious the TWG Valentine’s Day menu was. I love doing afternoon tea here (TWG was previously the Urban Tea Merchant) as it gives me the chance to chat with a friend over a selection of fine tea, and what is always delightful treats; this meal was the perfect excuse to cozy up and catch up on a rainy afternoon.

TWG Tea

The menu begins with a Bain de Roses Tea-infused sparkling wine cocktail and followed by the Mon Amour Tea, a black tea blended with yellow blossoms and sweet notes of quince, known as the sacred fruit of the Goddess of Love. How perfectly romantic! You could also go for an iced tea made with a blossom-infused green tea if you would like something cold, and we tried both as well as a sorbet-infused tea.

TWG Tea

The main course is a plate almost too pretty to consume, a perfectly-seared pan-seared scallops complemented by a dashi broth infused with a white tea and served wtih steamed garden vegetables and garlic Korean brown rice; so very precious!

TWG Tea

Dessert is just as stunning, a Bain de Roses Tea infused mousse and raspberry confit, served with scoop of Vanilla Bourbon Tea infused ice cream and fresh berries. As I am on a diet of sorts, preparing to fit into my wedding dress, I just had a bite, and that was very difficult.

One thing I managed to confuse was pouring the remainder of the broth into my tea, which made for an interesting cup of tea broth, I don’t recommend this, but do highly recommend the meal!

On until February 14 for $65 per person. TWG

Open Daily 10:00am to 8:00pm

Temperatures are rising in Vancouver, but by the weekend should cool off and we may even see some rain, so get out on those patios today and tomorrow! This year, World Champion Oyster Shucker Patrick McMurray, AKA “Shucker Paddy,” will make a special appearance to shuck fresh oysters for guests. McMurray is also owner of The Ceili Cottage Restaurant in Toronto, ON.

Over the course of the festival, guests can sip Canadian wine, craft beer and spirits, paired with delicious oyster creations from local chefs. A number of new events are planned for this year’s festival, including an International Oyster Night, featuring internationally-inspired oyster dishes; and the Under the Sea brunch at Watermark Beach Resort. info

Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words Vancity Theatre January 27 and 28

Casablanca, Notorious, Voyage to Italy… That Ingrid Bergman, three-time Oscar winner, is one of the movies’ all-time greats is inarguable. Narrated by Swedish (and now Hollywood) star Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Stig Björkman’s intimate exploration of Bergman’s personal and professional life benefits immensely from the cooperation of Bergman’s children, especially daughter Isabella Rossellini, who allowed him access to never-before-seen private footage, notes, letters, diaries and interviews.

push festival

Le Temps scellé – Push Festival January 27-29

With this performance from choreographer Nacera Belaza, contemporary dance is that much larger for a work that moves boundaries—but does so more with grace than with force. We begin in darkness, hearing pounding drums and plaintive vocals: half song, half chant. Two bodies move, at first so close to each other that they seem as one. As they separate it looks like a birth in the dark—a new creation. The dancing is liquid, with postures taken and abandoned in a perpetual movement; it’s like a never-ending reincarnation. As the patch of light widens, the two figures move in a bigger space, still coming together only to part.

Wilkinson’s stunning cinematography vividly captures the raw beauty of this very special part of the world. It is also, of course, a battlefield, though Wilkinson finds reasons to hope that First Nations’ long-view of environmental sustainability can prevail over short-term economic interest. It’s an inspiring film, and a worthy conclusion to a fine trilogy.

Moon Festival Tea Service The Urban Tea Merchant

moon-festival-tea-service480x511

The Chinese Moon Festival is on Monday, September 8 this year and until then The Urban Tea Merchant is serving up their Moon Festival Tea Service. Always a fan of afternoon tea at The Urban Tea Merchant, I was excited to mix it up a bit with the addition of Moon Cakes and a few extra Asian-influenced items on the platter.

They’ve had to expand the seating into the shop in addition to the tea salon since the tea shop is often busy, but I like the ambiance of the salon, so parked myself there. Apparently the Moon Festival is one for families as well as being a romantic one. As neither were available I sipped solo and was therefore not quite in the tradition.

I could faintly remember trying a Moon Cake before, but didn’t think too much of it. They are typically made with a rather bland red bean paste that seems to appeal to those who grew up with it. My early years were dominated with Vegemite and baked beans, and these cultural experiences were not included in my childhood culinary education.

The Moon Cakes are made by TWG and shipped out especially to The Urban Tea Merchant. There are four kinds that are all infused with teas. I preferred the Red Lantern with mixed nuts and smooth lotus paste infused with a jasmine and exotic fruit tea. The cakes are rather like a gourmet fig newton in flavour and texture. They serve slices of all four so you can sample the range before picking up some gifts.

IMG_6400

Red Lantern Tea is a combination of red tea and white tea, and has flavours of jasmine and exotic fruits and fruits and sweet spices. I recommend it as it’s only available at this time of year.

Moonfest at Urban Tea Merchant

Along with the cakes there are some savouries and fruit, which make it perfect for an alternative to lunch or an afternoon snack.

There’s a delightful miso-maple glazed sable fish in butter lettuce, “Dignitary’s Tea” chicken cone, chilled prawn ceviche, torchon de Fois Gras and tropical fruit.

The tea is only on until the festival is over, so I suggest acting quickly. Don’t forget your mooncakes to go for gifts; you can buy them in lots of one, two and four.  I shall try to sample a few more around town this year.
