Lift Has a New Menu

Executive Chef Soojin Park has just released a new menu at Lift, one of the most scenic restaurants in the city and highlights include:

Ahi Tuna – with mascarpone stuffed piquillo, summer vegetables and fennel marmalade
Mahi Mahi – with Hawaiian salsa, beurre blanc, carrot puree, roasted fingerling potato and vegetables
Pork Ribeye – with plum vinaigrette, onion velute, mashed potato, red wine jus

Canuck Place to host Vancouver’s largest blanket fort at their “Best Day Ever” event 

On Saturday, May 13, Canuck Place will transform the corner of Seymour and Georgia with the construction of Vancouver’s biggest blanket fort that will span almost 2,000 square feet. Event attendees will enjoy interactive musical performances, childhood culinary delights (like Earnest Ice Cream and Mom’s Grilled Cheese), and family-friendly games and activities. There will also be special appearances by Daniel Sedin and beloved Fin. Ever celebrates the favourite ways that Canuck Place families spend time together, from quieter moments spent in the Canuck Place Hospice gardens to exciting adventures on recreation therapy outings. Currently nestled in the Naramata Bench, we are enjoying our stay at Quidni Estate Winery and are very reluctant to leave! We’ve had some great food here and tasted some amazing wine and beer, so stay tuned for a Penticton/Naramata travel edition. Parallel 49 Brewing Company Hosting Beer Garden & Brewery Tours for East Vancouver’s Hop Circuit Open House, April 30th from 1pm to 5pm

On Sunday, April 30th, Parallel 49 Brewing Company is participating in East Vancouver’s Brewery District Hop Circuit Open House. From 1pm to 5pm, Parallel 49 Brewing Company will be offering self-guided brewery tours and hosting a beer garden behind their brewery (between Triumph St and Pandora St.), with Parallel 49 Brewing Company brews available for purchase. Minors will be allowed in the brewery as part of the self-guided brewery tours.  Parallel 49 Brewing Company’s tasting room is still undergoing renovations and will not be open to the public during Hop Circuit.

This is the second year Parallel 49 Brewing Company has participated in Hop Circuit, an event dedicated to uniting Vancouverites and the “Yeast Van” community. Popular brews like Parallel 49 Brewing Company’s Craft Lager and Bodhisattva Dry Hopped Sour will be on tap.

Vancouver TheatreSports™ League’s (VTSL) presents Western World

We’ve seen this and it’s absolutely hilarious! Head to the Improv Centre on Granville Island and check out Western World, inspired by the HBO series Westworld.

Each night features a totally new ‘episode’ under the watchful eye and guiding mind of Robert (sometimes Roberta) Ford. Guests begin their Western World adventure with an orientation. “Who are these hosts? Where do they come from? What roles do they play? Where is Western World?” are typical of the many questions that only VTSL’s esteemed Guests can answer. Throughout the first half, Guests help craft the story-line that becomes the basis for the second half of the show. In this artificial world of improvised comedy anything can, and will, happen.

Chef Ned Bell is on his way to Victoria this week to compete for the in Gold Medal Plates culinary competition and we posed a few questions in advance to get a feel for just what he might be preparing.

Tell us a little bit about your restaurant and/or style of cooking.

My Focus is on Wild Seafood from the Pacific Ocean, and responsible aquaculture, farming seaweeds, shellfish and fin fish in a responsible way from a clean ocean.  (Chef Neb Bell is at the Vancouver Aquarium)

Where do you eat in your city?

At home with my family, having 3 boys and a very busy wife keeps me close to the family table.

What would be your ideal food day? 

I am a very early riser, usually 4:30 am, and I travel a lot, so my fitness routine and my breakfast are always the same, no matter where I am, it keeps me on schedule mentally and physically. Breakfast and fitness set the tone for me for the day, after that, I will eat whatever I want as long as its healthy and of course indulgent.

What trend do you wish would die?

‘Trends’ in general, Everyone is trying to create the next cronut, lets focus on food as a pathway to health. I am not saying don’t eat your favorite things, but lets put more energy into eating well, then eating trends.

What trend/s do you wish would be next?

Food as a gateway to a healthy lifestyle, when I eat well and exercise, I rest better, have a happier clearer mind, and I am a better father, partner and son.

What ingredient do you always have on hand?

Really Good Sea Salt, I never leave home without it. (Van Island Sea Salt)

What’s your go-to recipe when you’re eating at home? 

Kate’s (Ned’s wife) Turkey Spaghetti.

What equipment do you wish you had in your kitchen?

My wife and I are renovating our kitchen at home, and I have lots of fancy kitchen gadgets at our Cookculture shops, so, honesty, I have all the kitchen equipment I need.

What cookbook would you suggest for a gift for your foodie friends this year?

Well, My first Seafood Book is coming out in Sept of 2017, so I’d say that one 😉. (Can’t wait!)

Any hints on what dish you will be preparing for Gold Medal Plates?

Very fall, roasted, caramelized, foraged mushrooms from Tofino, elderberries, fish and lots of tasty business .

Sustainable Table at The Vancouver Aquarium

Food enthusiasts have another reason to rejoice this season – Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre’s executive chef Tim Bedford has created a contemporary, ingredient-led event to tantalize guests on February 20: The Sustainable Table.

The Sustainable Table is an unforgettable feast showcasing some of British Columbia’s finest local and sustainable ingredients. Working in collaboration with esteemed executive chef Rob Clark at this inaugural event, The Sustainable Table will take guests along an unexpected culinary journey amid the magical backdrop of the Vancouver Aquarium.

Sustainable seafood advocates Bedford and Clark will delight guests with progressive, ocean-friendly seafood dishes, prepared in signature West Coast style. Guests may look forward to six sustainable courses, each with its own story – highlighting Ocean Wise sturgeon, B.C. spot prawns and Humboldt squid, among other local ingredients – as part of the journey.

The Sustainable Table takes place on February 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Aquarium. Tickets are $100 and support the Vancouver Aquarium’s conservation, research and education programs, such as its national Ocean Wise program. Aquarium After HoursThis Halloween season, explore the spooky seas with the 50,000 mesmerizing and mysterious aquatic creatures at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre.

On Wednesday, October 29, join the Vancouver Aquarium’s next adults-only event, After Hours*, for a frighteningly fun evening as event guests enjoy special hair-raising programs such as Snakes on a Stage, a special appearance by Darth Vader at the Venomous Fishes dive show and a guest presentation by the Aquarium’s head of cetacean research, Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard Killer Whales: Tyrannosaurs of the Sea.

Explore our galleries with a beer or glass of wine in hand as you learn about the spine-tingling creatures that call the Aquarium home, from venomous fishes and jellies, to bats, bugs, snakes and scorpions. You’ll also have the opportunity to get hands-on in our Wet Lab and to immerse yourself in the thrilling effects of our Goldcorp 4-D Theatre, featuring BBC Earth’s The Great Salmon Run.

Those in the Halloween spirit are invited to wear a costume** to the event and snap a “selfie” in our galleries with the hash tag #AfterHours for a chance to win a free pair of tickets to our next event.
