Weekly Goods – Fish Fights, Fish Sales and More

Events this week and on the Horizon

New(ish) for this week we are switching “What’s Good Week of” (because that title was kind of silly) to “Weekly Goods”. Each week (well most weeks) we will bring you what’s up for the week, a couple good things on the Horizon, and perhaps a few other good things. Does this sound too much like Martha Stewart’s “It’s good thing”?

Tuesday October 25 Chefs FISH FIGHT

What’s Good This Week

What’s Good This Week in and Around Vancouver

We are well into July, which means into the second half of the year! Time is flying by this summer. Last week’s Deighton Cup was a grand success and this week we are heading to a White Caps Game, Vancouver Theatresports newest show, Firecracker, checking out the newest hot spot in town, Fable on Broadway, and starting a new radio segment on spirits with Joe Leary and TSN1410 with the first recording at Mission with bartender Marc Smolenski. What else is up you ask?

Firecracker! July 21 and 28

Get ready for some fun folks. First up this week in an improv with Rebecca Bollwitt, Miss604 and then me, Cassandra Anderton on July 28th! YIKES! TICKETS You can also WIN tickets here.

Watch out Vancouver as we light a fuse to Vancouver’s comedy scene – shattering stereotypes and sparking a lot of laughs. Firecracker! features an all-star cast of female improvisers. It’s a different improv experience with an all-female cast, resulting in stories told from a uniquely female perspective. The ensuing comedy is inventive, unpredictable and uproarious.

Through the medium of improv comedy, Firecracker! will explore what it means to be a woman in Vancouver with audience suggestions inspiring the improvisers’ wicked wit. The inaugural shows will honour a special female guest whose stories of their life, work and achievements will inspire the performance. We are delighted to have the following guests join us for these performances.

Vancouver Foodster Tasting Plates North Vancouver

IMG_5615Finally made it to Vancouver Foodster Tasting Plates as I’d missed the last few due various annoying occurrences. While the weather didn’t cooperate and I ended up with rather wet feet, I still managed to enjoy a night roaming the North Shore with some transportation assistance from Jay Minter and Billy Hur when it came to traipsing up to the upper parts of Lonsdale. I boarded that boat they call the sea bus and crossed to the North Shore a without much hassle at all. I am mastering public transportation since we’ve given up the car. Headed to Pier 7 Restaurant where I picked up my event package and enjoyed their tasting plate item.

IMG_5602

Pier 7 Restaurant did a tasty compressed melon salad with yuzu on prosciutto carpaccio with a side of fresh scallop ceviche. Have also had a great family brunch here and you can’t argue with the view!

TasteNorthVan016

Next would have been Anatoli Souvlaki but as it was packed we opted to move on and then I was too full later to even think about going back. Pretty lame but I am not going to make myself sick in the name of food research! Dianne Chow of Fabulously Frugal provided this photo of Grilled Haloumi Caprese, Avgolemono soup (chicken rice soup with egg and lemon), or Fasolada soup (vegan bean soup),  Spanakopita and Houmus + pita.

TasteNorthVan013

Unfortunately the same went for Fishworks Restaurants so I missed their Halibut Poutine. Perhaps I should have ran in between restaurants to build up my appetite.

IMG_5607

Was super impressed with the layout and food at PlantoPlanto. Healthy and tasty plate filled with smoked tofu caprese salad, beets & feta, wasabi spiced potato salad, and sesame soy corn & quinoa.

acai bowl

raspberry lemonade

The Juicery Co had some refreshing strawberry lemonade on tap, served a vegan raw cocoa acai bowl and some vanilla bean & pear almond milk. I keep meaning to do another juice cleanse…..hmm.

cod bites little district

The Little District had some tasty deep fried bites of cod and shrimp fritters with spicy mayo. This room and menu is calling me for a return visit for sure! Sorry that the picture isn’t going to win any food photography awards as it was dark.

Rosemary RockSalt served up some Montreal Smoked Meat on a Rosemary Rocksalt bagel, Lox & Cream Cheese and Sweet Rugelach pastry. Loved these and will be back to the nearer location on Main Street for a full version of the smoked meat bagel

Missed a picture of Two Daughters Bakery, but their Gluten free vegan donuts and Gluten free vegan brownies made an excellent breakfast the next day.
