Petite Patios

Although we are well into mid-summer, it’s not too late to redesign your outdoor living space, or at least give it a spruce up. In Vancouver, apartment living means our outdoor space is rather small, but we’ve managed to utilize it well and have a beer fridge, Weber BBQ, patio set and a good selection of herbs and flowers.

With the extreme heat and lack of air conditioning here in our west facing Arbutus Walk apartment, by the end of the day staying indoors is intolerable. So I set up an outdoor table where Michael can read, and I can catch up on my social media posts, in a much cooler spot. With the beer fridge within reach, and a BBQ for our summer meals, it’s ideal.

We do Diner En Blanc every year, so last year I had the smart idea to order a table and chairs, which arrived, well after the event, and proved to be far too large for our little balcony.  Presidents Choice to the rescue! I drove out to the garden center on Grandview highway and found an excellent, more fitting set, and grabbed an umbrella and a nice bright lantern, and cushions too.

Picked up some colourful flowers and herbs to pretty up the space and to add to our summer meals.

There’s a lot to choose from, and if we had more space, which we will one day, there’s plenty of other things I would add to the back yard. Like a smoker, room for more guests or some side tables.

Community Garden

The other awesome thing about Vancouver is our community gardens and we are lucky to have one at city hall. This year we’ve planted tomatoes, zucchini peppers, lavender, tiny basil and are also dealing with a very aggressive lemon balm maniac of a plant.  Again all from the garden section at Presidents Choice. Pictured above is our garden in June and now when it’s almost overrun.  To the far left there’s even an experimental goji berry plant.

There’s lots of great advice on their gardening site, and I’ve go more tips from last year’s patio spruce up here. NEVER forget to read the labels on the plants and pay attention to how much light they need and plan according to your space.

Good luck with your outdoor space and here’s some other cool ideas I came across.

*President’s Choice sent us a gift card that covered part of our flower purchase.

Dockside Dine Out Vancouver 2013

Dockside2-960-300Dine Out Vancouver is on until February 3, 2013 and if you are looking for a room with a view, Dockside Restaurant in Granville Island is an excellent choice.  Dine oceanside with views of False Creek and if you want to have a mini staycation, the Granville Island Hotel is an elevator ride away.  The menu here is $28 and well worth the money.  Wine and beer pairings are available as the restaurant also houses an onsite brewery where brewmaster Mark Simpson crafts a wide variety of beer styles.  Chef Simon McNeil wasn’t in the night we visited, but the kitchen was left in good hands and all flowed smoothly on the floor.  If you have the chance to sit in monsieur Julien’s section don’t miss it.

Dockside Dineout 2013

The dinner begins with an amuse of creamy tomato fennel bisque served with a cheddar puff pastry.  Off to a superb and tasty start.

Dockside Dineout 2013

We then chose the crab and corn bisque with a tasty rice cracker and pepper crab butter.  Time had been taken to roast the crab shells giving the bisque a divine richness.

Dockside Dineout 2013

The Arugula salad with goat cheese and tomato chips had just the right amount of the zippy olive oil and roast pear vinaigrette.

Dockside Dineout 2013

The sablefish was roasted to perfection and the accompanying vegetables and barley the perfect companions.

Dockside Dineout 2013

The lamb neck inside the tortellini was tender with a flavourful smoked carrot and roast apple veal jus, but the pasta dough needed some work, and was a bit tough.

Dockside Dineout 2013

The vegetarian option, a grilled leek and carrot quinoa sounded like nothing particularly special, but was truly the highlight of the meal,  full of layers of flavour and accented with a butternut squash and almond hash.  Beautifully done.

Do save room for the dessert and make your tablemates share as you will want to try both the eclair pastry and the dark chocolate cream cup with brandied black cherries.

Great value at $28 and a perfect pre or post-theatre meal.  Ride the Cyclone is currently on at The Arts Club Granville Island stage and absolutely blew me away – roaringly funny!

The Westin Grand – Pop Up Patio

Act quick to check out the latest pop up at The Westin Grand at Homer and Robson Street.  Sit poolside and catch the last rays of summer amongst the gardens with music from their live DJ.  On every Thursday and Friday while the weather lasts.

The menu is created by Executive Chef Matthew Richmond and is served from a BBQ action station.  Bartenders from Hidden Tasting Bar & Social Lounge have created cocktails and there’s a selection of beer and wine available.

On a particularly sunny Friday we stopped by to enjoy some drinks and bites.  I was tempted to jump into the pool, but managed to contain myself.  The menu is well-priced and a few appies together can make a meal, or one or two will start the night off right as you unwind after work with a couple drinks and then proceed on to dinner.

PATIO MAKEOVER!

Our patio has a new look!

We have been collaborating with Vancouver artist Scott Sueme of Kids at Heart Creative to enhance the ambiance of our patio space.

We are happy to report that the result is an inspiring, unique and timeless mural that has people talking!

The artist’s goal was to create a piece that had a sense of balance between his street art graffiti imagery and a more abstract ideology.

Come in for a cocktail on the patio and check out our new art.   Or read our blog for more info!

SALMON IS BEST SERVED.…

We don’t mean to start an argument, so we’re featuring salmon served two of the most time-honoured ways — smoked and roasted –- a single dish: West Coast duo of BC Wild Salmon Salad with smoked & roasted salmon, honey dressing and hints of soy.

This salad combines the best of both worlds: the richness of hardwood smoked salmon and the sweet tang of ginger soy roasted salmon.

Try it today or take a look at our full menu for many more delicious options.
