Whistler Brewing Company’s Brewmaster, Joe Goetz decided to push the envelope further with an interesting and perhaps riskier development for Fall 2011 with the new, small batch – limited release, Valley Trail Chestnut Ale. Earlier this year the brewery produced its first ever limited edition beer, Paradise Valley Grapefruit Ale which was a knock-out success selling out in both retail stores, as well as restaurants and bars in record fashion.
The Valley Trail Chestnut Ale is a full bodied ale developed with an interesting blend of robust caramel and crystal malts, but to move this recipe into a totally new territory, Goetz incorporated stone-milled chestnut flour from both roasted and un-roasted chestnuts. While lightly hopped, this ale delivers a surprisingly distinct spiciness along with nutty malt characters – and spiciness significantly enhances the bittering complexity of this beer.
Whistler Brewing Company President, Bruce Dean, notes that the BC craft brewing is moving towards highly-hopped beers and as a result, subtle recipes with more complex characteristics tend to be pushed to the sidelines. “If you are looking for a unique Fall beer, with nutty aromas and a surprisingly spicy hoppiness, then the Valley Trail Chestnut Ale is a must try this season. We suggest pairing this brew with roasted root vegetables, savory braised pork and beef, as well as Asian noodles and roasted poultry,” says Dean.
Valley Trail Chestnut Ale will be available in a 650mL bottle at both Government and Private liquor stores throughout British Columbia as of October. Consumers will also be able to enjoy the product on draught at many local restaurants and bars throughout the province.
