The Oliver Osoyoos Oyster festival is held each year in the heart of the wine country, a perfect venue for hosting Canada\u2019s Oyster Wine competition. \u201cCanadian wines are a natural pairing for our country\u2019s oysters\u201d, states Claire Sear, creator of the Canadian Oyster Wine Competition<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The inaugural competition saw over 80 entries divided into nine categories and was open to all wineries in Canada. The competition also included a \u201cWild Card\u201d category open to any alcoholic beverage produced with 100% Canadian ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>The categories and winners for this year\u2019s competition were:<\/p>\n<p><b>Best of Show: <\/b>Blue Mountain 2011 Vineyards Pinot Gris<\/p>\n<p><b>Pinot Blanc:<\/b> \u00a0Winner:\u00a0 Kraze Legz Estate Winery 2012;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runner-Up: Lake Breeze Vineyards 2012<br \/>\n<b>Un-Oaked Chardonnay: <\/b>Winner: Poplar Grove Winery 2011;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runner-Up:\u00a0 Meyer Family Vineyards 2011<br \/>\n<b>Oaked Chardonnay: <\/b>Winner: Upper Bench Estate Winery 2011;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runner-Up:\u00a0 Dostana 2010<br \/>\n<b>Riesling: <\/b>Winner: Intrigue Wines, Focus Riesling 2012;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runner-Up: Kalala Estate Winery 2010<br \/>\n<b>Pinot Gris: <\/b>Winner: Blue Mountain Vineyards 2011;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runner-Up:\u00a0 Tinhorn Creek Vineyards 2012<br \/>\n<b>Sauvignon Blanc: <\/b>Winner:\u00a0 Bench 1775 2011;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Runner-Up: Clos du Soleil Fume Blanc 2012<br \/>\n<b>Sparkling: <\/b>Winner:\u00a0 Haywire The Bub 2011\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Runner-Up:\u00a0 Noble Ridge Winery The One 2009<br \/>\n<b>Wild Card: <\/b>Winner: Cherry Point Estate Winery Gewurztraminer 2011\u00a0 Runner-Up: Tinhorn Creek 2Bench White 2011<\/p>\n<p>Judging took place at Walnut Beach where wines were paired with Marina\u2019s Top Drawer Oysters from Outlandish Shellfish grown near Cortes Island.\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Cassandra\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/Temporary%20Internet%20Files\/Content.Outlook\/DS24EKTT\/www.outlandish-shellfish.com\">www.outlandish-shellfish.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Judges this year included Rhys Pender, Master of Wine and owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wineplus.ca\/\">www.wineplus.ca<\/a>; Mark Filatow, Sommelier and Chef <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterfrontrestaurant.ca\/\">www.waterfrontrestaurant.ca<\/a> and Canadian Culinary Championships British Columbia winner and finale competitor;\u00a0 Audrey Surrao, WSET certified and co-owner www.raudz.com; Cassandra Anderton, food and wine writer and publisher of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodlifevancouver.com\/\">www.goodlifevancouver.com<\/a> and Brad Cooper, Okanagan winemaker and owner of Black Cloud Winery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was an interesting competition.\u00a0 Many of the wines showcased quite well when paired with the raw oysters,\u201d comments Rhys Pender, MW and owner Wine Plus+ \u201cWe all agree that 82 entries in year one was quite an impressive number for a first year competition and we look forward to watching the competition grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Oliver\/Osoyoos Oyster Festival is sponsored by Walnut Beach Resort and was created to showcase the sustainable oysters produced by the farmers and guilds of the nearby West Coast together with the award-winning wines of the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association.
