Bar Isabel, Toronto: \u201clooks, feels and tastes vaguely Castilian but does far more than ape a menu straight out of Madrid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2. Shoto, Toronto: \u201ca storybook of a tasting menu, with all the typical annoying bits \u2013 the repetition of ingredients, the showy caprice, the monotonous pacing \u2013 smartly edited out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. Fogo Island Inn, Joe Batt\u2019s Arm, Nfld. and Labrador: \u201cThere\u2019s a terrific survivalist spirit bursting out of Chef McDonald\u2019s kitchen, where most everything is made from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4. Supply and Demand, Ottawa: \u201c It\u2019s not supposed to be this easy for a first-timer &#8230; you notice all the little things that rookies Steve and Jennifer Wall are getting so right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>5. Pidgin, Vancouver:\u00a0 \u201cThe cuisine of Winnipeg-born Chef Ono, who ran restaurants in Beijing and Hong Kong, draws from multiple languages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6. Carino Japanese Bistro, Calgary: \u201ca Japanese-Italian wine bar that defies logic in the most wonderful ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>7. Maison Publique, Montreal: \u201cA mere 250 years after the Treaty of Paris, cooking Anglo food in Montreal is cool again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8. Le Bouchon du Pied Bleu, Quebec City: \u201cone of the most convivial, playful, unabashedly fun dining experiences I\u2019ve had anywhere in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>9. The Acorn, Vancouver: \u201cThat the food is meatless is almost beside the point unless you\u2019re a foodie vegetarian who\u2019s long hankered for a compromise-free night on the town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>10.
