\u00a0New participants for 2014 include:\u00a0East Van Roasters\u00a0<\/b>(Gastown),\u00a0Last Crumb Bakery & Cafe\u00a0<\/b>(Main St.),\u00a0Koko Monk Chocolates\u00a0<\/b>(Kitsilano)\u00a0and\u00a0Uva Wine Bar<\/b>\u00a0(Downtown),\u00a0<\/b>as\u00a0<\/b>well as four new franchise owners from\u00a0Blenz Coffee<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Cool factor \u2026<\/i>This year for the first time, vendors\u00a0Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Uva Wine Bar<\/b>\u00a0will be offering the option of cold, hot chocolates. Plus the flavour in the cups of hot chocolate at\u00a0Bella Gelateria\u00a0<\/b>will be inserted via gelato master James Coleridge’s new ‘gBARs’ (frozen gelato on a stick).<\/p>\n

\u00a0Mixologist\u00a0Lauren Mote<\/b>\u00a0(Uva Wine Bar) will be breaking our former rule of ‘no alcohol’ with four cocktails inspired by traditional hot chocolate. Two without alcohol (one hot, one cold) will be available all day, while those of the boozier sort (crafted with Mote\u2019s own\u00a0Bittered Sling<\/b>\u00a0extracts) may only be sipped in the p.m.<\/p>\n

WHAT’S FUN: \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0With over 60 flavours to choose from, it’s going to take at least a month to try them all. \u00a0Trend observers won’t be surprised to see salted caramel, Earl Grey tea and cardamom as popular flavour choices again this year. But if they\u2019re looking for something a little edgier, they will find plenty to tempt their curiosity.<\/p>\n

After all, when\u2019s the last time you tried a hot chocolate flavoured with\u2026<\/p>\n

*\u00a0PARMESAN<\/b>:\u00a0<\/b>The “Phaun’s Fancy<\/i>” from\u00a0CocoaNymph<\/b>‘s lineup (named after the Classical Gods), unites chocolate with cheese and nutmeg.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0LICORICE:\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0Kerrisdale\u2019s\u00a0Gem Chocolates\u00a0<\/b>makes a\u00a0“Twisted Romance<\/i>” of Belgian chocolate and Australian natural black licorice.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0CURRY: \u00a0<\/b>Festival newcomer,\u00a0Koko Monk Chocolates<\/b>\u00a0will fly chocolate lovers straight to Bollywood with\u00a0“The Brunette Bangle<\/i>“.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0POTATO CHIPS: \u00a0<\/b>Ouch!\u00a0Mink Chocolates\u00a0<\/b>takes a playful stab at the\u00a0Food Network<\/i>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/b>“Paula Dean’s White Trash Train Wreck”<\/i>\u00a0<\/b>– a caloric spectacle of milk chocolate, condensed milk, salted Kettle Chips and whipped cream.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

*\u00a0CABERNET:\u00a0<\/b>Wine lovers will want to take a spin with\u00a0Terra Bread’s\u00a0<\/b>“Call Me a Cab”<\/i>\u00a0<\/b>– a joy ride of chocolate, red wine, cinnamon and pear.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

*\u00a0PEPPERMINT & TUMERIC<\/b>:\u00a0\u00a0Groovy, baby!\u00a0Leonidas Chocolates<\/b>\u00a0captures the artistic temperament with\u00a0“Boho Secret”\u00a0<\/i>– a performance piece of honey, black pepper, peppermint and turmeric.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0FOREST FIRE FUMES:\u00a0<\/b>Take the batteries out of the smoke detector!\u00a0Thomas Haas Chocolates\u2019<\/b>\u00a0“Campfire<\/i>” will be smoldering with smoked Hawaiian sea salt and smoked caramel.<\/p>\n

* And meanwhile … localvores should not overlook\u00a0Soirette Macarons & Tea.\u00a0<\/b>The drinks at this Coal Harbour sweet shop and caf\u00e9\u00a0have been inspired by the Vancouver landmarks of Stanley Park, Chinatown, Grouse Mountain and the Granville Island Public Market. \u00a0A cup of cedar-scented\u00a0“9 O’Clock Gun”,<\/i>\u00a0anyone?<\/p>\n

Hot chocolate purists need not fret. Most of the vendors will be serving at least one drink featuring unflavoured, hi-cocoa content chocolate only. \u00a0Thierry’<\/b>s “Apamakia<\/i>“, for example, will be made from a special plantation-grown cocoa that is exclusively available at their Alberni Street patisserie and cafe.<\/p>\n

Now while you can\u2019t get around the fact that these drinks contain sugar, beyond the pure, high antioxidant-rich dark chocolate, several vendors will also be upping the health quotient with\u00a0coconut, soy or almond milk, as well as 100% vegan ingredients. Look for these marked on the menus at\u00a0French Made Baking<\/b>,\u00a0Schokolade, CocoaNymph<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Chocolateria de la Nouvelle France<\/b>.<\/p>\n

WHAT’S MORE:<\/b><\/p>\n

Regardless of flavour, all drinks are guaranteed to be deliciously photogenic, and in that light, festival goers are invited to enter photos of their drinks to an online contest that could earn the lucky winner a set of gift certificates from all participating vendors.\u00a0It’s a $500 value and a great way to extend the Festival throughout the year.<\/p>\n

For the festival-goer’s dollars, all drinks will come with extra goodies that reflect each shop’s culinary specialty. Profits from all Festival sales will be donated to The\u00a0PHS Community Services<\/b>\u00a0program for Downtown Eastside women’s employment and job skills training programs (as run by\u00a0East Van Roasters<\/b>.)<\/p>\n

The lights of Christmas may be gone, and it’s going to be a long grey stretch until spring, but if anything can banish the chilly gloom of January, this cheerful Festival can.<\/p>\n

After all, it’s a scientifically proved fact that \u00a0“CHOCOLATE MAKES YOU HAPPY.”<\/p>\n
