\"IMG_7182\"<\/a>Chef Eligh proved his culinary prowess last night, taking home the gold award at the Victoria 2014 Gold Medal Plates competition held at the Victoria Convention Centre. Chef Eligh went head to head with eight of the province\u2019s finest chefs at the prestigious culinary competition and will now go on to compete at the Canadian Culinary Championships, the Gold Medal Plates Finale, in Kelowna on February 6 and 7, 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am elated,\u201d says Chef Kristian Eligh. \u201cIt\u2019s an incredible feeling. This is my hometown. To win here with my family and friends is what means the most. It was a tough competition and I want to congratulate everyone who took part for really raising the bar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chef Eligh wowed the judges and a crowd of hundreds with his dish of confit pork neck, granny smith apple, puffed avonlea cheddar, m\u00e2che paired with Meyer Family Vineyards 2012 Tribute Series Chardonnay \u2018Kelly Hrudey\u2019 Old Main Road Vineyard. Wesley Young from Wildebeest took home the silver\u00a0medal and the bronze was awarded to Terry Pichor from Sonora Resort.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe felt the standard had really lifted this year compared to last,\u201d said National Judge James Chatto. \u201cThe top three or four could have gone either way and it was a tough decision. Ultimately, Chef Kristian Eligh\u2019s dish was simple but vivid with a great wine match, which gave him an edge over his competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Proceeds from Gold Medal Plates go to the Canadian Olympic Foundation, supporting programs that further Canadian high-performance athletes\u2019 pursuit of excellence on the world stage \u2013 programs such as Own The Podium and COC\u2019s Athlete Excellence Fund. Since 2004, Gold Medal Plates has generated over $8.2 million for Canada\u2019s Olympic athletes.<\/p>\n

Judges for the British Columbia competition included notable media and food critics: James Chatto (Head Judge), Andrew Morrison (BC Senior Judge and Judge\/Referee), Gary Hynes, Sinclair Philip, Shelora Sheldon and last year\u2019s Victoria winner Chef Brian Skinner. Each dish was judged out of 100 points, based on visual presentation (20%), texture (20%), taste (30%), wine compatibility (10%), originality (10%) and wow factor (10%).<\/p>\n
