Celebrated Bartender\u00a0Becomes First Woman to Claim Prestigious Title and\u00a0Opportunity to Represent Canada in Global Finals in Cape Town, South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our Vancouver bartenders are rocking it lately. From\u00a0PR News – It\u2019s been a banner year for\u00a0Lauren Mote<\/a>, as the Bittered Sling Bitters<\/a>\u00a0co-proprietor and UVA Wine & Cocktail Bar<\/a>\u00a0manager was just crowned the 2015 Canadian Bartender of the Year in Canada’s biggest and most celebrated bartending competition, Diageo\u00a0World Class Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hot on the heels of her Bartender of the Year<\/a> award at\u00a0the Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards in April 2015, Mote becomes the first woman to win the coveted Diageo World Class Canada Bartender of the Year title, and only the second woman to compete at the national level (alongside her close friend and peer, Danielle Tatarin, of Vancouver\u2019s The Keefer Bar).<\/p>\n

\"DiageoWorldClass_LaurenMote\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Held June 22 to 24, 2015, the nationwide Diageo World Class competition welcomed 10 of Canada\u2019s top bartenders to Chicago, IL\u00a0to compete in seven gruelling challenges over three days.\u00a0Testing their knowledge, skill, speed and showmanship behind the bar was\u00a0a\u00a0panel of 12 influential bartending and spirits experts: Charles Joly<\/strong>, Dale DeGroff<\/strong>, David Nepove<\/strong>, Dennis Tamse<\/strong>, Jacques Bezuidenhout<\/strong>, Jeff Bell<\/strong>, Jim Meehan<\/strong>, Julie Reiner<\/strong>, Ricky Gomez<\/strong>, Steve Olson<\/strong>,\u00a0Tony Abou-Ganim<\/strong>, and last year’s Canadian champion, Grant Sceney<\/strong>, of Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim.<\/p>\n

\"Diageo<\/a><\/p>\n

The competition kicked off on day one with the \u201cOde to the Windy City<\/strong>\u201d challenge, where Mote developed a super hero pop-up book featuring hospitality workers as the heroes of their community\u00a0with the host city, Chicago, as the backdrop.<\/p>\n

On day two, the finalists competed in two challenges, \u201cSensorium<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cThe Tasting Menu<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0which\u00a0paired\u00a0cocktails and food, as well as a written exam and blind taste test.<\/strong> Mote cleverly won the Sensorium\u00a0challenge with an elaborate sensory experience of her whisky-based cocktail, \u201cLoup-Garou\u201d (“werewolf” in French), set to a live trio of French hornists playing Sergei Prokofiev’s iconic Peter and the Wolf<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On the last\u00a0day of the competition,\u00a0the \u201cLocal Goes Global \u2013\u00a0Ketel One Market Basket Challenge<\/strong>\u201d saw\u00a0<\/strong>Mote make two\u00a0cocktails: \u201cEquinox\u201d (lemon balm-infused Ketel One Vodka, Antica Formula Carpano Vermouth, black garlic-honey cordial) and \u201cFleur-de-Lis\u201d (Ketel One Citron Vodka, spearmint-infused Cocchi Americano, black pepper-rhubarb shrub, rhubarb-ginger preserves, carbonated water). In the \u201cCocktails Against the Clock<\/strong>\u201d speed round, Mote\u2019s storytelling continued when she made six cocktails in eight minutes, all centered around the Soo Line, an underground system of tunnels connecting Moose Jaw, SK and Chicago, IL during the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway.<\/p>\n

Said judge Abou-Ganim of Mote’s performance: “She was simply amazing \u2014 she owned it! It was something to behold.”<\/p>\n

Mote\u2019s road to Chicago began in May, when she presented her cocktails \u201cKid Video\u201d and \u201cAu Lieu de Ski\u201d at the British Columbia regional finals, held at Vancouver\u2019s Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar. As the 2015 Canadian champion, Mote will travel with Sceney to Cape Town, South Africa for the Diageo World Class Global Finals from Aug. 28 to Sept. 5, 2015 where she will not only represent Canada against the world\u2019s best bartenders from an unprecedented 57 countries, but female bartenders everywhere.<\/p>\n

“I cannot begin to express how amazing this feels,” says Mote, who just returned from Montreal and Toronto where she hosted\u00a0a series of educational cocktail seminars, and will soon travel to New Orleans<\/a> for Tales of the Cocktail\u00ae 2015. \u201cTo simply compete amongst my incredibly talented friends and colleagues was an honour, but to win is an absolute privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n
