But that’s only one small part of the story. In its homeland of Emilia-Romagna, Lambrusco has been enjoyed for centuries, with styles ranging from delicate and floral to dark, structured, and remarkably complex.

A recent tasting at Homer St. Café & Bar offered a chance to explore just how diverse modern Lambrusco has become. By the end of the lunch, one thing was abundantly clear: if you still think Lambrusco is one wine, you’re missing the plot entirely.

Think of it less as a wine and more as a family reunion. Some relatives show up in tailored Italian suits. Others arrive on Vespas. A few are loud and boisterous. Today, it is produced primarily in Emilia-Romagna, the region that also gave the world Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, traditional balsamic vinegar, and some of Italy’s most beloved pasta dishes.

Unlike many wine categories, Lambrusco isn’t made from a single grape variety. Instead, it encompasses a family of related grapes and appellations, each producing distinctly different wines. Sorbara, Grasparossa, and Salamino are among the most recognized styles, ranging from pale and delicate to dark and richly fruited.

That diversity was on full display during the tasting.

One Name, Many Expressions

The lineup featured: (sorry I missed some of the vintages)

Umberto Cavicchioli L’Ancestrale Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC

Umberto Cavicchioli Vigna del Cristo Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC

Umberto Cavicchioli Rosé del Cristo 2022

Righi Lambrusco di Sorbara

Pra di Bosso Lambrusco Reggiano Amabile

Cavicchioli Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro Amabile

Pra di Bosso Lambrusco Reggiano Secco

Albinea Canali Ottocentonero Lambrusco

Casali Lambrusco dell’Emilia Secco

Tasted side by side, the wines revealed an impressive range of aromas, textures, and personalities.

The Sorbara wines were among the most captivating. Pale ruby in colour and surprisingly elegant, they delivered notes of raspberry, wild strawberry, watermelon, rose petals, and citrus. Vigna del Cristo, often considered one of the benchmark wines of the appellation, showed remarkable finesse and freshness.

L’Ancestrale offered a glimpse into a more traditional side of Lambrusco. Produced using bottle fermentation, it added a savoury, almost yeasty complexity to its vibrant fruit profile.

Rosé del Cristo was equally compelling, combining delicate berry flavours with crisp acidity and fine bubbles that practically demanded another sip.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Lambrusco Grasparossa showcased the darker, richer side of the category. Blackberry, plum, and subtle spice notes gave the wine more structure and depth while still maintaining the bright energy that defines great Lambrusco.

One of the World’s Most Underrated Food Wines

The tasting reminded me how incredibly versatile Lambrusco is at the table.

The lighter Sorbara wines immediately brought oysters to mind, and there they were. Their bright acidity, delicate fruit, and lively bubbles were a natural pairing for freshly shucked oysters, and I’m imagining seafood towers, spot prawns, crudo, and other coastal favourites. While many people instinctively reach for Champagne with shellfish, these wines make a compelling case for looking to Emilia-Romagna instead.

As the wines gained body and depth, the pairing possibilities expanded. Charcuterie boards, pizza, fresh pasta, grilled vegetables, and aged cheeses all felt perfectly at home.

The richer Grasparossa styles seemed made for fried chicken, and it totally worked. In fact, if you’re already a fan of Champagne and fried chicken, Lambrusco should be your next obsession. The acidity and bubbles cut through richness beautifully while the fruit complements the savoury flavours in a way that’s almost effortless.

These aren’t wines that demand hushed tasting rooms and lengthy discussions about terroir. They’re wines that make you want to order another plate for the table and settle in for a longer lunch.

Which, perhaps, is exactly the point.

Time for a Revisit

Today’s Lambrusco feels perfectly suited to the way many people want to drink now.
