The Greasy Spoon Vol 14. Featuring Trevor Bird from Fable Kitchen – April 26

An evening affair that will defy your preconceptions of diner food! The Greasy Spoon Diner was conceived by a group of passionate Vancouverites led by Mark Brand who hosts it monthly at his Save On Meats diner. It pairs a chef and his chosen team, often from many other kitchens, alongside a front of house team comprised of people from all sectors in our city. A new menu is created each month which fuses together fine dining and diner food to deliver a four course meal to remember. Proceeds from this edition will be going towards a great cause which focuses on hunger solutions: A Better Life Foundation.

Cafe Medina Chef and Me

Food Day Canada’s Anita Stewart and Cafe Medina Chef Jonathan Chovancek

In Vancouver we toured Fable, Cafe Medina, Campagnolo, and Forage with Food Day Canada founder and Canadian Lentils campaign ambassador, Anita Stewart. It was a super fun and super delicious luncheon, with each chef creating a widely different, and ever so delicious dish with the mighty Canadian Lentil.

Sadly I did not get to try the Cafe Medina dish as I had to leave the tour early, but I’ll be heading soon to Medina to get it a whirl. The competition is tough with each Chef bringing an entirely different take on the lentil to the table. You’ll have to decide for yourself. As for me? I think I better try them all at least one more time.

Get out and taste and vote, vote, vote!

Fable hosts a special dinner with Chef Dale Mackay

Chef Dale Mackay

Well if it isn’t just one of our favourite chefs visiting one of our favourite local restaurants for a collaboration dinner! On Friday January 30th, Chef Dale Mackay will visit Fable Restaurant to create a five-course meal alongside the Fable’s Chef Trevor Bird

Last year former Vancouver dweller Chef Mackay headed back to his hometown of Saskatoon to open Ayden Kitchen.  It was named as a 2014 top 10 new restaurant in enRoute magazine and he has continued to impress restaurant critics and guests with his locally-focused cuisine.

It’s one night only so be sure to book soon. Tickets for this special dining event are $125 including all taxes & gratuities – beverages sold separately.  Seating is from 5:30 to 8:30pm, as per arranged reservation time.  Tickets can be purchased directly from Fable at 604-732-1322 or via email food@fablekitchen.ca.

Feast of Fields Craft Brewers

Chef GoodLifeVan (Michael Smith)

I was told that I could come to Feast of Fields this year to sit on a blanket, read a book and drink craft beer. Well I only managed to do one of the above but that one was the best part! The beer sampling of course.

The BC craft beer community was well represented with the following breweries:

Driftwood Brewing www.driftwoodbeer.com
Hoyne Brewing www.hoynebrewing.ca
Mission Springs Brewing Company www.missionsprings.ca
Powell Street Craft Brewery www.powellbeer.com
R&B Brewing www.r-and-b.com
Red Truck Beer www.redtruckbeer.com
Russell Brewing Co www.russellbeer.com
Salt Spring Coffee www.saltspringcoffee.com
Squeezed Wines www.squeezedwines.com
Stanley Park Brewery www.stanleyparkbrewery.ca
Surlie Brewing www.surliebrewing.ca

So, like the trooper I am, I took upon my self to try them all (or at least ones I haven’t had previously) and I came up with my own beer awards for the day.

Mission Springs

#1 Mission Springs – Cherry Bomb Pale Ale
#2 tie Powell Street White IPA
#2 tie R&B Spruce Tip Pale Ale
Honourable Mention Surlie Brewing Solitaire Belgium Strong Dark Ale
Also worth mentioning was the Driftwood Farmhand Saison and Crooked Coast Altbier

Oh yeah there was food as well, and my notables were Forage with their pickled and preserved vegetables, Fable, who served an amazing pate topped with fruit, Choices inventive sturgeon and vegetable shooters and Lolita’s ground beef and chorizo tacos.

Cheers for now,

Fable Restaurant

Olive Oil Poached Salmon with soy truffle vinaigretteRight in the heart of Kitsilano Fable Restaurant delivers fresh, local food with flair.  Chef Trevor Bird and front of house partners Kathy Shleyer and Ron MacGillivray are genuinely invested in their concept of farm to table cuisine.  After a near win on Season 2 of Top Chef Canada, Vancouver fortunately seduced Chef Bird and he promptly found an appropriate location in Kitsilano at 1944 West 4th Avenue. The room is comfortable and inviting with exposed brick walls, wood beams and a bar with views into the kitchen.   Lunch is a casual affair with fresh sandwiches, soups and salads, while dinner is a more intense with an ever-changing menu including items such an Asparagus Salad with fresh ricotta and bacon vinaigrette, their signature Canned Tuna, Slow Cooked Spring Salmon or Potato Crusted Chicken.  Weekend brunch is a hit.  Welcoming service, great cocktails and a great wine list complete the experience. www.fablekitchen.ca www.facebook.com/fablekitchen www.twitter/fablekitchen 1944 West 4th AvenueVancouverBC. Rockford Wok|Bar|Grill, a fresh new take on Vancouver’s casual premium dining experience, has announced a unique lineup of summer patio parties to celebrate the season. Much more than canapés and drinks, their parties put a new spin on the popular summer past time – a spin that includes everything from large ‘fire woks’ to ‘ceremonial shots’ and Pacific Rim-inspired cuisine.

Aptly named the: ‘Fire Wok with Us Patio Party,’ the series of festivities will highlight Rockford’s distinct combination of Asian flare with their hip casual-premium dining.

With three big dates booked for three locations: Friday, June 1st at Rockford West Broadway; Friday, June 8th at Rockford Langley; and Friday, June 15th at Rockford North Vancouver; the restaurant chain is generating a huge buzz throughout the Lower Mainland area.Going for a fun and edgy feel, each party will feature three large woks at the entrance – with the first wok containing a burningfire, the second wok containing a full moon iced tea shooter, and the third wok containing signature wok-fired squid. “We love summer and really wanted to incorporate an interactive summer ceremony into the celebration, so our fire wok not only serves as an attractive display, but as a way for guests to make summer wishes,” says Darnel. Specifically, the party invitations encourage attendees to write down what they want to forget about winter, in addition to a summer wish. Then, at the party they can toss their invite into the ‘fire wok’ as a symbolic ‘burning away’ of their ‘winter worries’ and ‘ignition’ of their ‘summer dreams.’
With no shortage of perks, guests also have the chance to win Rockford’s VIP Patio Party Prize Pack which includes a $150 Rockford gift card and a 2-night stay at the Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort with two lift passes. “They really will
be a series of parties unlike any other,” remarks Darnel, “fire, drinks, amazing food and the best patio on West Broadway? Summer at Rockford is here.”
