What’s Good This Week – Easter Weekend Special

What To Do in Vancouver for Easter Weekend?

Folks I’ve been so wrapped up in wedding thingies and my big weight loss challenge that I’ve been running around like a chicken with my head chopped off! AND yes, they sadly do that and really, so do I. I don’t even think I told you I won the challenge, but more about that later. However, I can’t let Easter go by without at least a couple suggestions as I believe in fully celebrating each and every holiday. It’s something I got from my mother, who went out of her way to make my sister feel loved and festive during each season. Thanks for all those little (and big) gifts and for instilling that spirit in us!

I’ll be celebrating this weekend again, as for one it’s my bachelorette party (can’t wait) and for two Easter. Since I can’t invite you all to the girls day/night, you’ll have to make do with some Easter events that I can.rocky

Les Petits Bonheurs Pop-Up Shop At Les Amis

Les Petitis BonheursOn Saturday July 05, 2014 from Noon to 5pm head to les amis du FROMAGE at 843 East Hastings St. for your weekly cheese rations and pick up dessert at the same time.

Les Petits Bonheurs started as a bakery concept between two good friends who share a love of sweets and desserts. They specialise in classic French desserts, specifically choux à la crème (cream puffs). Les Petits Bonheurs sources all of their staples locally and try to source the best ingredients for the flavour components (matcha, pistachio, fresh lemons etc) and do not use preservatives. They make everything by hand to coax out the best texture and flavour.  Their treats are made on a smaller scale, that way you can always have more than one!

Vista D’oro Farms – Pop-Up Preservatory at 843 East Hastings Vancouver

vista d'oroThe preserves, chocolate and macarons are perfect for gifts and for entertaining this holiday season! GLV

The artisanal preserves and ‘friends’ are the featured attraction at the weeklong Pop-up Preservatory –  until November 24th.  Vista D’oro  chose the location as the ultimate venue with the perfect neighbours – Les Amis du Fromage and just down the road from Gourmet Warehouse!

The preserves will be available alone or in one of the five, about to be launched, ‘Trio’ packs; The Entertainer, The Bachelor, The Mixologist, The Sweet Tooth and The Epicurean. Each checkered ‘Trio’ pack comes with three (no kidding) preserves and inside each is a three-course ‘menu’ with recipes for each. A few collaborative items will also be available in the Pop-Up Preservatory, among them; Soirette’s Vin de Noix Macaroons – made with the farms flagship fortified walnut wine D’oro; Chocolate Arts’ exclusive Vista D’oro creations each incorporating either a wine or preserve from the farm; and Lavender Sugar for Lavender Eight Farm in South Langley.

If you can’t make it to the Pop-up Preservatory, you can still head to farm at Vista D’oro in South Langley at Campbell Valley Park and find those same ‘fancy jams’ and of course taste the wines and hang out with the resident wine dogs, Paris & Chablis.

Tips for Holiday Entertaining – keeping it simple locally

Click to listen – Foodie Fridays December 2

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, there’s bound to be some parties on your calendar.  If you are entertaining at home, or contributing to the items at friends, there are some great local products that will be sure to impress your guests.

Smoked Oysters – The Oysterman

Once you’ve had these you’ll never go back to the mass produced version.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that these are my new favourites

Premium fresh quality oysters nurtured and grown in the deep waters of Effingham Inlet in Barkley Sound on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. This remote pristine environment produces oysters perfect for serving on the half shell. Effingham Inlet oysters have plump cream coloured meat with a vibrant briny flavour and smooth lettuce like finish. On-site conditioning with tumbler guarantees uniform size, deeper cup and clean hard shells. Available year round

Caviar – Nothern Divine

Spoil your guests with some Sunshine Coast Caviar.  Put atop baked potato slices with some crème fraiche or sour cream.

Seasonal Items, Croissants, etc.

La Baguette L’Echalote has frozen croissants to go, that will be sure to impress for brunches.  Just think how your house will smell!  While there why not pick up a Buche de Noel, some country pate and gingerbread cookies.

If you really want to make things simple they’ve got whole meals you could create at home.  Treat such as stuffed quail, lamb shank, duck confit and seafood in lobster sauce.  Mix up a salad, steam or roast some veggies and a pot of rice or potatoes you’ve got a meal.
