You don’t have to head to the Okanagan for a wine-country road trip. This October, the Fraser Valley Wine Passport is back, bringing together wineries, cideries and a distillery across Langley, Abbotsford and Surrey for a month of tastings close to home. Running October 1 to 31, the passport includes 13 wineries, three cideries and one distillery, with each participating stop offering a tasting experience. Some locations are pouring changing daily selections or tasting flights, while others add cocktails, food, patios, picnic areas or full restaurant experiences. Every stop is also required to offer a non-alcoholic option. At $30 including…

Negroni Week runs through September 27, with classic pours, inventive riffs and a few very good reasons to plan an early drink. There is something deeply satisfying about a Negroni when the evenings start to turn. It is bitter, herbal, citrusy and just a little bit dramatic: a drink that knows exactly what it is doing. Negroni Week is on now through Sunday, September 27, bringing participating bars and restaurants together in support of Slow Food International. Vancouver has no shortage of places to order the textbook gin, Campari and sweet-vermouth formula, but this year a handful of spots are…
The Metro Vancouver Croissant Crawl is a very good reason to gather a friend, choose a neighbourhood or three, and spend a day exploring the city through flaky, butter-rich pastry. It is self-guided, delightfully low-stakes and full of limited-edition creations that go far beyond the classic croissant. This year’s crawl brings together 35 participating bakeries and cafés across Vancouver, Burnaby, the North Shore, the Tri-Cities, Richmond, Surrey and Langley. Each is offering a limited-edition creation, ranging from classic pastry-shop indulgence to proper savoury lunch territory. A handful have also created drinks to pair alongside. When: September 25 to October 4,…
A self-guided pastry trail through Abbotsford From an apple crumble fritter to a cinnamon bun cupcake, Taste of Abby’s self-guided pastry trail is a very good reason to head east this September. There are plenty of reasons to point the car toward Abbotsford in fall and, since I happened to have a Nissan Pathfinder for the week, I felt professionally obligated to investigate farm stands, pumpkin patches and a serious roster of independent cafés. This month, Taste of Abby gave me an even more specific mission: the Bun Run, a self-guided pastry trail that turns a handful of local bakery…

The 10 B.C. hotels with Michelin Keys There are hotel lists, and then there are hotel lists that make you immediately start mentally planning a road trip. Michelin has just updated its Canadian hotel distinctions for 2026, naming 10 B.C. stays to its Key list. I’ve been lucky enough to sleep, snack, spa, sip coffee and generally conduct my preferred form of field research at nine of them. The only one I have not yet experienced firsthand is Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, which happens to be the province’s sole Three-Key hotel, and, frankly, a fairly persuasive reason to finally make that…

There’s a lot happening in B.C.’s food and beverage world right now, and sometimes the best reminder of just how creative the industry is comes in a box. https://www.instagram.com/p/DdXckAevmtH/ BC Food & Beverage recently sent Good Life Vancouver a collection of products highlighting some of the makers connected to the 2026 RISE Awards, and unpacking it was a delicious snapshot…
A few things I ate, drank and discovered around Vancouver this week. Some weeks have a clear flavour. This one was bright, salty, a little glamorous and unexpectedly dill-forward: an anniversary party with a martini fountain, an especially memorable Indian tasting menu, a pickle festival and a run of drinks that reminded me how much pleasure there is in a well-made glass of something. September has properly arrived, but I am not quite ready to trade every bright, social evening for a night at home. There is still time for a good party, a good cocktail and a plate that…
Desi Indian Lounge’s Himsagar for Summerland fundraiser From September 10 to 12, 50 per cent of sales from the seven-course, Summerland wine-paired experience will be donated to relief efforts. Vancouver’s Desi Indian Lounge is turning its newest tasting-menu experience into a three-night fundraiser for Summerland. From September 10 to 12, the downtown restaurant will donate 50 per cent of sales from its Himsagar seven-course tasting experience to Summerland fire relief efforts. The $85-per-person menu will be paired exclusively with wines from the Okanagan community, including selections from Silk Scarf Winery and Lightning Rock Winery. Created by executive chef Bal Ajagaonkar,…
There is a particular kind of early September week I always love. The air changes just enough to make lunch feel like an occasion again, the kitchen starts calling for something beyond tomatoes and burrata, and the calendar somehow manages to be both full and full of possibility. This week, I found myself thinking about Spain, lingering over a few very good lunches, and wondering why we do not all keep a tin of octopus in the cupboard. What I’m eating I have been dipping into Spain My Way, the new cookbook from José Andrés and co-author Sam Chapple-Sokol. It…
