Venture out to New Westminster and you’ll soon be able to sample right from the tap at Steel Oak Brewing Co. It’s fitting that the city be home to a new brewery as it’s history of brewing dates back to the 1800’s and continued until 2005 when one of the big guys shut its doors. In fact there is a Brewery District brewing in the city. Owned by locals Jorden Foss and James Garbutt. Beers brewed by Peter Schulz who spent time at Russell Brewing and then headed to Germany to take the brewmasters program at the Technical University of Berlin.…

I love a good oyster bar, even if oysters are the only forte. However, when there is the addition of a cocktail program, a serious scotch selection and a menu that showcases local products, I’ll spend more than a few moments checking it out. Recently I lunched at such a place – The Blackbird Public House & Oyster Bar. Chef Alvin Pilay is in charge of the menu here and I am giving what I have tried so far a big stamp of approval. Lunch started with some fantastic oysters from Sawmill Bay, the Read Island Gems served up creatively…

Headed down to Feast Tofino Dock Festival and grabbed a mug of Tofino Brewing Blonde Ale to cheer on the release of a rehabilitated octopus! Had it in a plastic cup which is by no means the best way to drink it, but it worked dockside and was less of a hazard if you happened to have a few. It has a pale straw colour with a nice floral, biscuit and fruity aromas and on the palate clean peachy, orange bitters taste with abit of light hoppiness and mild carbonation.
