Ploger Delikatessen – 1900 West 1st Avenue

Looking for a little taste of Europe on your way to the beach or after West 4th shopping? Ploger Delikatessen has just been transplanted from its Frankfurt home to Kitsilano at West 2nd and Cypress.

With a clean classic interior complete with cushy seats comfortable grey banquettes for inside visits, and patio tables outdoors for those warmer days, it is your go to spot for dine in as well as a source for high quality deli take-out.

Owners Corinna and Frank Ploger moved to Vancouver from their native Germany where Frank’s grandparents opened the original deli in Frankfurt in 1935.  During WW2, the family left the country for the US, but they returned post-war and moved the focus to high end gourmet wares.   Klause, Frank’s father, joined the deli and when he married, he  and his wife Monica became heavily involved in the daily operations.  Along came their son Frank, who, when old enough, also joined the Ploger Deli and then brought his wife, Corinna, onboard. This is a true family business. After many years, an offer to buy came along, and this generation of the Plogers closed the Frankfurt Deli and moved to Canada to open the Kits location.

Behind the counter there are tasty sandwiches.  Try the chicken breast on 3 chili cheesebread, pork schnitzel or salami-cheese on foccacia. Add a salad for a complete meal; couscous with mixed nuts, hearty potato or carrot apple slaw will certainly add both flavour and nutrition to your day.

The Plogers make all their own stocks and there’s daily quiche as well. Three varities were on the fresh sheet on a recent visit – spinach, onion and Lorraine. The dessert and bakery section include fresh apple strudel, walnut or almond tarts, lemon coconut cookies and a selection of chocolate.

If you are shopping for home, you’ll find a fresh veggie and fruit section. Deli meats, Hills ground beef, and of course a big sausage selection can also be added to your cart. Milk, ice cream, bread, pasta sauces, dressings and crackers are all top quality and Ploger even makes its own jam.

Ploger is a fantastic spot to meet a friend and catch up over a latte, have some lunch or sweets and then pick up the ingredients for your evening meal. Staff are super friendly and helpful and there’s usually a parking spot or three available nearby.

Dear Ploger on west 1at avenue @ Cypress:

Any chance of having Hours of Operation posted on your front door? Please. I mentioned this to someone who works there a couple of weeks ago and they looked at me like I had three heads. Most professional businesses do this so customers don’t have to guess when you’re open. Thanks.
