Refinery Cocktail Kitchen Series Part 2

As one one of the most innovative cocktail programs in Canada, The Refinery is proud to start the second segment of a six month interactive and educational competition called “The Cocktail Kitchen Series”. Launched on July 8th 2010, “The Cocktail Kitchen Series” aims to promote niche craft cocktail development, through the expertise of Vancouver’s best veteran and up and coming bartenders who have demonstrated creativity and leadership in their cocktail craft.

Here is the premise of the program:

Each month, a bartender is paired with a different spirit, and a different country – this will be repeated 4 times a month with a different bartender each Thursday. Guests are invited to come down and experience the interactive teachings of the featured bartender, who will attempt to effectively pair the featured country’s menu, with a set of three cocktail using the base spirit. Plus, there’s another spin: the bartenders will shop at The Refinery – it is mandatory that each cocktail include a Refinery house bitters. One week prior their Cocktail Kitchen, the bartender will be able to score 1 oz x 3 types of bitters/vermouths available at the Refinery for cocktail testing. The Refinery’s Bitters Program inventory sits at 19 types as of today.

Concept & Rules:

– 3 cocktails, submitted at least 48 hours in advance – including methods, names, recipes

– The cocktails will be paired to the featured 3 course tapas-style dinner, the menu of which bartenders will know about 1 week earlier

– Each cocktail must include a Refinery bitters/vermouth/tincture

– Each Thursday, guests will be given a score card, rating the bartender in the following criteria:

            * Presentation

            * Taste

            * Originality

            * Delivery:  Knowledge, Speed, Presence, Showmanship, Inspiration,                    Passion

            * Grand Prize each month

– Bartenders will change monthly, giving most an opportunity to participate in the program

– Bartenders will be given a bar tab just for participating, and gift from the monthly liquor sponsor

– The winning bartender will be invited back to participate the following month during week 4

– The end of the sixth month, and seemingly covering 6 different regions/countries and spirits, the bartender with the most wins will receive a grand prize trip to Napa Valley, provided by the owners Ray, Peter and Ryan of the Refinery and SIP Resto Lounge Granville Street.

– This is a 6 month long promotion and contest – BUT we do not take time off – we keep going every 6 months

We urge you to check out website under “Press” to see for yourself how representing your bar/restaurant with the Cocktail Kitchen Series at The Refinery is best for business. Each week we will have 2 different media personalities in attendance, as well as a film crew and photographer. The press releases we write are reaching more than just Scout Magazine and Urban Diner for local restaurant industry news. We also do radio segments, TV spots, and reach a broad range of national and international publications, not to mention the persuasive and domineering food and beverage blog industry here and across the globe. As a bartender, this is an excellent avenue to raise your profile in the municipal and national community.

The Granville Room Crafts Olympic-Inspired Cocktails

granvillecocktailAs the Olympic torch makes its way across Canada, the Granville Room shows its spirit with the announcement of its Olympic-inspired cocktails, created by resident bar star Trevor Kallies. Available January 1st until the end of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, each cocktail is inspired by a great Canadian Olympic moment and showcases Canadian liquor and ingredients. Trevor created five cocktails in honour of the five Olympic rings, which sell for $9 each.

The Winner Take All, inspired by Cindy Klassen’s 2006 speed skating performance in Turin, blends Crown Royal Special Reserve Whiskey, honey syrup, Gamay Noir float and flamed orange peel. Lord of the Oval is named for Gaetan Boucher’s three medals in long-track speed skating at 1984’s Sarajevo games, and marries Wiser’s deluxe, muddled red grapes, peach bitters, ginger ale and peach juice. The Gold, Silver and Greene, inspired by Nancy Greene’s 1968 double medal performance in Grenoble, melds Victoria gin, Barnston Island basil, simple syrup, grapefruit juice and orange-flower water. The Double Lucky Loonie, named for the men’s and women’s hockey teams (which both took home gold from the 2002 games in Salt Lake City), blends Canadian Club Premium Whiskey, maple syrup, Whistler Black Tusk Ale and Sortilege Canadian Whiskey & Maple Liqueur. The Golden Redemption, named for Jamie Salé and David Pelletier’s near miss of figure skating gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City games, marries Alberta Premium Rye with applesauce, fresh lemon juice and a dash of Fee Brothers’ rhubarb bitters.

$45 cocktail! – Granville Room Launches The 957

The Granville Room Kitchen & Cocktail Bar kicks off summer with the launch of the luxe 957 cocktail, created by resident bar star Trevor Kallies.

Crafted in three parts, the ultra-chic 957 blends Hennessy XO and Belvedere vodka and is topped with an aromatic vanilla foam. Adding further personality, the cocktail is crowned with a ‘GR’ monogram in the Granville Room’s trajan typeface, which is achieved by spritzing whiskey-barrel aged cocktail bitters through a stencil onto the foam. This elegant cocktail has caused quite a stir for Granville Room patrons shelling out $45 to sip on this luscious concoction.

Named after the Granville Room’s address on bustling Granville Street, the 957 was inspired by master mixologist Kallies’ current love affair with cognacs. The Hennessy XO’s rich, spicy notes and natural vanilla flavours are balanced by the vanilla liqueur in the foam and the hints of oak in the Belvedere vodka; the aromatic bitters compliment the foam’s sweetness. Rounding out the 957 experience is a creamy mouthfeel and luxurious texture.

The 957 is among a bevy of new flavours coming to the Granville Room and DHM Bars this spring and summer, thanks to Kallies, who spearheads the company’s cocktail development program and is regarded as one of the city’s finest bartenders. The new summer menus emphasize contemporary cocktails brimming with refreshing, fruity flavours, including new ingredients such as rose, orange & kiwi syrup, cinnamon sticks, Bulleit bourbon, apple twist vodka and cherry brandy. Meanwhile the classic cocktails adhere to the original recipes that have long made them favourites.

An oasis of good taste and casual elegance in the Entertainment District, the Granville Room may just be the least talked about place that everybody loves. Always busy with metropolitan locals and a chic pre-club and post-theatre crowd, the Granville Room focuses on excellent service, fine, quality craft cocktails and a boutique dining menu. The richly dark interior is accented by large mirrors, inviting couches, intimate booths and a lavish bar. The Granville Room is located at 957 Granville Street, and is open from 4pm – 2am daily.
