Galloway’s Specialty Foods’ owner Annie Kara is proud to announce the opening of her 2nd location. The bright, spacious store on Marine Way in South Burnaby offers more than 9000 products, from black cocoa to red quinoa (keen-wa). For years, customers have trekked to the Richmond location for specialty food that offers the world – fine spices from the sunny West Indies to exotic Africa, rich oils from Portugal to Australia.
Galloway’s first opened in the 1940s and shoppers today often reminisce, “I went to Galloway’s on Robson Street with my grandmother.” Today, Galloway’s is a support system for foodies and kitchen pros who have an appetite for experimentation, look for specialty diet items such as gluten-free and sugar-free, appreciate the hard-to-find items such as black eye peas, and like to converse about recipes.
Since the Robson Street days, bins of dried fruit, nuts, beans, seeds, flour, grain, and spices have been replaced with several sizes (50g to 2kg depending on product) of Galloway’s packaged goods: calimyrna figs to goji berries; roasted pepitas to dry-roasted edamame; black turtle beans to channa; chia seeds to black sesame seeds; amaranth flour to teff flour; quinoa to spelt; ajwan seed to tukmeria (as well as 8 blends of curry). The promise, however, remains the same: freshness and quality.
Shelves overflow with exceptional baking items and decorations, glace fruit, and Callebaut chocolate. The gourmet collection of international food includes Carnaroli rice from the Andes Mountains (the preferred rice for risotto), rose and orange water from Lebanon, harissa from Morocco, roasted piquillo peppers from Northern Spain, double 00 flour from Italy (the best for pasta and pizza crust), sriracha sauce and coconut cream powder from Thailand.
“With its quality spices and reasonably-priced, one-of-a-kind items sourced from around the globe, Galloway’s has contributed to Vancouver’s gourmet food landscape,” says Julian Bond, award-winning chef and Executive Chef and Program Director of Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. “It’s a place where the future chefs at PICA get inspired.”
