I used to think of Burgoo as a place to head to in the winter for stews and heavier dishes. They even bill themselves as a soup and stewhouse, but they are in fact much more than just that. On Fourth Avenue in Kitsilano, they have a lovely patio and there’s a new seasonal menu showcasing summer items such as ceviche and poke as well as salads and lighter soups.
The wine and beer list is locally focused and service is prompt and friendly.
We stopped in for a meal and gobbled up the fresh Summer Greens salad with bacon, apple, almonds, cucumber, local goat cheese and a light vinaigrette.
The Ahi Tuna Poke had some good flavours but was a bit heavy on the dressing and I’d like to see something crisper with the dish than pita to scoop it up. Maybe deep fried wontons?
Mac and Cheese was rich and full of flavour and the jambalaya was another hit. Sadly no room for dessert.
For the Khatshalano Art and Music Festival on July 13, 2013 Burgoo will be doing strawberry lemonade and pulled pork sliders curbside and have an extended patio so we can enjoy the (cross fingers) sun.
