From Tourism Victoria
DisThe coffee culture in Victoria, BC has just expanded by one. Based on the belief that great coffee is for everyone, Discovery Coffee who came onto the scene in 2006 opened the doors to their second location in Oak Bay in September 2009. The family run business stands on a core set of beliefs, that the brewing process should be accessible to everyone, belief in the professionalization of the coffee service with staff dedicated to the craft and a love of brewing and a commitment to respect on every level – respect for farmers who produce coffee, for the folks who brew it and the people who drink it. The new Oak Bay location houses the capital city’s first vacuum pot and halogen bar. The 150 year old brewing method uses a halogen heater instead of a Bunsen burner allowing the brewer to zone in on the flavours of the bean giving nuances of a tea-like coffee. With stools set up in front of the bar, visitors to the coffee house are encouraged to ask questions as the brewer explains the process the coffee is going through. Discovery Coffee is dedicated to giving back to the community by offering private classes in home brewing, educational lectures as well as playing host to barista jams and competitions.
