Amacon & Hives for Humanity Unveil Vancouver’s 1st Free Public Beekeeping Experience at “Breakfast with the Bees” Milross Gardens Launch
Just in time for the summer break, Vancouverites are encouraged to come explore the wonderful world of bees
On Monday, July 14, representatives from Amacon and Hives for Humanity will officially launch the community Milross Gardens on Main, kicking off Vancouver’s first free weekly Beekeeping Mentorship Program open to the general public. A community celebration, the “Breakfast with the Bees” event will mark the first day of the unique beekeeping experience, which is available to anyone, every Monday from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM, in season.
Located at Milross and Main, the Milross Gardens is a partnership project between Amacon and Hives for Humanity, and is an urban oasis that fosters a spirit of community, openness, horticulture, and beekeeping. Complete with plots for local green thumbs, the Milross Gardens also act as a pollinator sanctuary — an urban meadow that provides essential forage and habitat for critical pollinating insects, currently at risk worldwide. The gardens also feature two honeybee hives, which offer locals the therapeutic benefits of beekeeping, raises awareness about pollinators, and empowers environmental stewardship. Bees and other pollinators are essential for a sustainable food system, and the Milross Gardens aim to be a “first-step” local solution to a global challenge.
The Milross Gardens Beekeeping Mentorship Program is hosted by beekeepers from Hives for Humanity, and all Vancouverites — from toddlers to grandparents — are encouraged to stop by and immerse themselves in the fascinating world of beekeeping. Just in time for school children on their summertime break, this hands-on program offers an interactive opportunity to “bee” a beekeeper, observing bees, tasting honey fresh from the comb, and learning about the importance of our pollinators.
Embracing the spirit of community, children and representatives from KidsSafe will be attending the “Breakfast with the Bees” launch, and will participate in a fence beautification project, complete with painting and hanging wooden pollinator cut-outs.
