What’s Up In Vancouver – Events and Happenings
I’d planned on launching into the New Year with new energy and intentions, but as many, I’ve had a nasty cold, so it’s been a bit of a slow start and I’m having to temporarily substitute pajamas for the sports tights I’d planned on wearing. It’s certainly frustrating, but it’s another lesson in balance as I burned the candle at both ends for much of 2017, so a lot of my goals this year will be around more self-care. Here’s hoping your year is of to a good start and here’s a few events that can help pick up your spirits and get you off on the right foot for 2018.
From January 2 through 21 Vancouver TheatreSports™ – Throwdown International TheatreSports Festival
Head to the Improv Centre, on Granville Island for Throwdown where teams from around the world will bring their A-Game to in head-to head matches with each other and local teams comprised of VTSL’s top improvisers. Throwdown 2018 features teams from Philadelphia, Boston, Bellingham, Portland, and Orlando, who won in 2016 and 2017.
From January 2 through 13 four local teams comprised play in a TheatreSports™ round robin competition for bragging rights as to who is the best in Vancouver. The laughs start to flow based on suggestions from the audience and things can quickly become quite partisan as audience members root for their favourite performers. January 16 through 21 welcomes the five US teams in a series of hilarious matches and showcases designed to banish even the gloomiest of times! Performance schedules here
Until January 21 Chinese Lantern Festival at The PNE
Experience Vancouver in a whole new light in this 5-week celebration of Chinese culture featuring massive lanterns, amazing performances, storytelling, food trucks, and a marketplace. This festival is the largest festival of its kind in Canada. It features 35 illuminated displays with more than 1300 individual lanterns, transforming over 14 acres of Hastings Park into an explosion of light and colours.
Until January 28 Capilano Suspension Bridge
New this year, the famous Douglas-firs of Treetops Adventure receive the star treatment – dressed in sparkling lights from top to bottom! New and returning park guests will enjoy the changing light display that illuminates Capilano River from the suspension bridge and Cliffwalk, as well as the magical illumination of the West Coast rainforest. Getting into the spirit of the season is made easy at Canyon Lights with holiday craft stations, cookie decorating, a scavenger hunt and sing-a-long tunes with the band.
