Barb Wild’s #WineWednesday Wine Pick For January 14, 2020
We’re adding more wine into the Good Life Vancouver mix this year and introducing you to Barb Wild, The Good Wine Gal, whose nose, palate and wit will be sure to impress you! I’ve been leaning on Barb for her wine recommendations for a while now and she has yet to disappoint. I grow more knowledgeable each time we sip and savour together, on the topic of wine and more. I know many of you in the wine world will know her already, but for those who don’t there’s more about Barb below and you can read more on her own site https://goodwinegal.blogspot.com/. The Winemakers Cut Sauvignon Blanc is her pick for this weeks #winewednesday. – GLV
Happy hump day! It’s time for a celebration because, well, we are halfway through the week and we are still here. (Haha.) One of the ways I celebrate is to open a bottle of mid-week wine and enjoy it with a dish I lovingly prepare. For me, cooking is how I relax and get ready for what lies ahead – Thursday and Friday.
My #winewedesday wine recommendation is for a mid-week wine considered “vino with value”. It’s that bottle you would happily bring to any dinner party on the weekend. It didn’t break the bank and it can hang around in your fridge or cellar for a few weeks, maybe longer without causing concern.
Wine Recommendation?
This week I’m recommending “sunshine in a bottle” from Dead Man’s lake in the south Okanagan, to go with one of my favorite dishes – grilled chicken breast with creamy mushrooms. The perfect wine for this dish is one that has lots of acidity to offset the richness of cream and butter. It’s a wine that has a big enough body to stand up to the meaty texture of the mushrooms and density of the grilled chicken. Head on over to Damn Delicious for a recipe for the Chicken in Creamy Mushroom Sauce (that’s also her dish pictured above).
Winemaker’s Cut Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is a white wine that offers crisp, fresh, and clean aromas and flavours of yellow grapefruit, lemon zest, gooseberry with grassy, green apple reminiscent of a New Zealand classic. It comes in a screw top bottle so if for some reason you don’t finish, no harm no foul, you can stick it in the fridge for Thursday evening pre-dinner wine.
With only 300 cases available for the vintage, the Winemaker’s Cut Sauvignon Blanc this wine is not going to stick around. I noticed it is on “by the glass” at El Santo in New Westminster for $12. If you live in Yaletown stop by Swirl Wine Shop ‘cause it’s on feature this week for $21.99 before taxes. Bargain! Here’s a link to the Swirl online store. What are you waiting for?
Here’s a fun fact: The Winemakers Cut wine maker is Michal Mosny, originally from Slovakia, who has a passion for natural, sustainable grape growing and winemaking. He’s also a fan of classical music and he plays it in the vineyard and winery whenever possible. Seriously, the grapes are raised by Beethoven, Mozart and Bach!
About Barb Wild From Barb Herself!
I’m a foodie at heart. Because of my love for food, I discovered wine. At the time I had no idea what the difference was between Bordeaux and Burgundy or why I would choose one over the other to go with my meal. Seriously! I would look through wine lists and become totally lost, wondering to myself “if I ordered the more expensive bottle would I get a better wine” and “how do I make the right choice?” That was the birth of my wine life.
Today after thousands of hours of wine study, thousands of dollars of wine tasting, and thousands of miles traveling the wine regions of the world, I think I have the answer to the question “what is good wine and how do you find it?” In this way, wine becomes less complicated and more accessible to you the wine lover and to everyone interested in wine.
In 2018, after successfully completing one of the most rigorous wine courses on the planet, I launched my wine media brand “Good Wine Gal” to share my passion for wine with the single purpose of inspiring others to wine in an unstuffy way that brings more joy and possibilities for both the people who are interested and the wines that are waiting. My wine adventures can be found on the Good Wine Gal blog (goodwinegal.blogspot.com) and social media channels of Facebook and Instagram @goodwinegal.

$21.99 before taxes is a value wine? Guess you get paid a lot more than me.
Dick,
Thanks for reading and commenting. Our fellow wine writer, Kurtis Kolt, published this article and I think it gives some insight as to why the wine is not comparatively expensive.

We’ll be sure to look into some less expensive wines too, so please do stay tuned!
