PRESS RELEASE:
You may have seen a certain figure around town before: a man who looks like he’s just walked out of a 1920s carnival, with a curly moustache and a bed of nails in tow. That dashing figure is none other than Neil E Dee, a sideshow stunt artist who has been performing for over ten years. Neil has recently decided to re-vamp his infamous ‘Danger Thrill Show’.
When asked why, Neil replied, “I thought it was about time to introduce some new material. It’s a chance to not only broaden the scope of the show, but it is a chance to challenge myself as a performer.”
And what a challenge that must be! After sitting in on a rehearsal with him and burlesque sensation Melody Mangler one morning, I found myself in awe at some of the stunts these two have come up with. And that’s to say nothing of some of the other unique talent that Neil has managed to line up for the show.
“We’ve got a straight jacket escape from Iain Duncan (a local and well known juggler), feats of strength by The Mighty Barsky-Strong Woman, as well as aerial trapeze by Lady La May,” Neil explained to me as he settled down on the bed of nails as if it were the most comfortable thing in the world.
“I really wanted a show based on the old carnival ways, but mixed with some newer tricks and music. A mash-up of the old and the new.”
And as he and Melody practised together it was very clear to me the devotion and planning that has gone into this show, I mean how often do you get to see a triple bed of nails stunt? Not to mention a few raunchy balloon acts, over a dozen darts being thrown at Neil, and a Motorcycle stunt that had me cringing!
When I asked Melody Mangler how she’s been enjoying working with Neil, she just shot me a mischievous smile. “Let’s just say that I’ve never had so much fun abusing someone with my feet!”
So whether you think of it as abuse or entertainment, one thing is for sure, this is going to be an all new kind of Danger Thrill Show!
You can catch the show Friday November 30th at the Wise Hall, doors at 8pm show at 9pm
