Do Chay’s Delightful Takes on Vegetarian and Vegan Fare

Michael and I ventured out for lunch last week, in the, once again, foul Vancouver weather, but it was well worth it as we discovered a delicious spot, Do Chay Saigon Vegetarian, that has opened this summer, at 1392 Kingsway. I was rather thirsty as I’d been overindulging lately, so the charcoal lemonade was exactly what I needed, and Michael took advantage of the craft beer list and ordered a local brew from Parallel 49 Brewing.

The menu is broken down into three categories: street food, noodle bowls, and rice bowls. Most items are vegan and even gluten-free,  a few are just vegetarian, such as the Pan Fried Daikon Cakes made with egg, salted radish, papaya slaw, and green onions.

We choose the Tapioca Glass Dumplings filled with mung bean and carrot, crushed peanut, caramelized onion, and paired with Do Chay’s “ish” sauce; the texture was perfect, soft with little bit of chewiness.

The Spring Rolls were delightful, extremely crispy and served with mustard green leaves and herbs for wrapping for extra good measure.

XO Green Beans are wok tossed in a spicy mushroom sauce and served atop crunchy noodles, once again proving that texture is king at Do Chay!

Our favourite dishes were both the Black Garlic Eggplant with tofu, black garlic, red chili and yo choy with rice and the Satay Noodles with peanut and sesame spicy satay broth, broccoli, yuba, tomato, and rice noodles; such depth of flavour in all these dishes.

The 1,200 square-feet space is modeled after the Chinese herbal medicine shop, which used to occupy the space. You’ll find a large welcoming wooden door at the entrance and the interior has ingredients displayed in glass containers and a water wall.

Do Chay is licensed with a full beverage menu. It is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Seating is first come, first serve but the large round table can be reserved for groups. For more information, please visit www.dochay.ca
