Traditional home-cooked turkey?
Preparing your own tender, juicy turkey doesn’t have to be a daunting a task. These simple tips from Whole Foods Market will have you roasting to perfection in no time!
Plan Ahead; Buy Local:
Make sure to order at least one pound of turkey per guest, plus more for leftovers. Whole Foods Market carries Traditional JD Farms Specialty Turkey $3.99 per pound and Organic Maple Hill Farms Turkey $4.99 per pound from family farms located in B.C.’s Fraser Valley. Turkeys are either free range or raised in spacious, well-ventilated barns and are fed a natural diet of grain, vitamins and minerals without medications or animal by-products. All Whole Foods Market turkeys are brined and ready-to-roast, so all you need to do is season and stuff!
Turkey Cooking Tips:
- wash the turkey and dry thoroughly with paper towel
- brush the turkey generously with melted butter before roasting for the best colour and flavour
- stuff the turkey just before roasting – never in advance
- cooking times vary widely, but a good benchmark is three to four hours for a 12- to 16-pound turkey at 350°F
- roast the turkey on a rack with white wine or liquid in the bottom of the pan, basting the turkey often with drippings from the pan
- begin roasting the turkey with the breast side down for the first hour
- after the first hour, turn the turkey right-side-up and continue cooking until the legs and thighs reach an internal temperature of 180°F and the breast 170°F
- always use an instant-read thermometer to measure internal temperatures – remember that the internal temperature will increase by 10°F after you remove the turkey from the oven
- let the turkey rest for approximately 20 minutes before carving to keep the meat moist
- make sure to save the drippings for gravy!
Delicious Seasoning Rubs:
Create your own tasty turkey rub by mixing together complementary dry herbs and spices from Whole Foods Market. Make sure to rub all-over the turkey before roasting.
- Cajun – fennel seeds, thyme, sage, paprika, cayenne, salt and pepper
- Latin – cumin, oregano, cayenne, salt and pepper
- Caribbean – cumin, coriander, ginger, allspice, cayenne, salt and pepper
- Mediterranean – thyme, oregano, sage, salt and pepper
