The Roundhouse and FarmFolkCityFolk’s Get Local Project are pleased to announce the return of “SUSTENANCE Festival: Feasting on Art & Culture.” A unique celebration of food and the art it inspires, SUSTENANCE Festival starts on Friday, October 8 and culminates on World Food Day: October 16th.
SUSTENANCE Festival kicks off with the opening celebration on Friday, October 8. Guests can enjoy local food by Salish Catering and wine from Nk’Mip Cellars while celebrating the launch of the SUSTENANCE art exhibition curated by Malcolm Levy of the New Forms Festival and CODE Festival of the Cultural Olympiad. Vancouver Design Nerds will be rolling out their large-scale interactive “Gramorail”, a fully functioning, pedal-powered, four-person locomotive that inspires thoughts about Vancouver’s transportation history. Fresh off the New Forms Festival and the Cultural Olympiad series, eatART’s “Mondo Spider”, the world’s first walking electric vehicle, will be on display. The evening continues with ANU’s musical-magical improvisational performance of Hunger, produced by Tanya Evanson and Mother Tongue Media.
SUSTENANCE Festival presents its headline event, Dinner & Dialogue: 5 Courses of Conversation on Thursday, October 14. Join five of Vancouver’s top chefs for a unique five-course dinner featuring local and organic ingredients provided by their local farmers and product suppliers. The meal will be paired with wine and conversation about each chef’s commitment to supporting local producers, and the benefits that extend to the environment, the economy – and to the food. Chefs include: Karen Barnaby (The Fish House in Stanley Park), Todd Bright (Wild Rice), Chris Whittaker (O’Doul’s Restaurant & Bar at the Listel Hotel), Quang Dang (Diva at the Met) and Todd Hodgins (Pair Bistro). Tickets are $70 and can be purchased through www.Roundhouse.ca.
The final day of festivities will celebrate World Food Day on Saturday, October 16 with a full day of activities at The Roundhouse. Kick off Pumpkin season with Clive, an expert pumpkin sculptor, who will be onsite doing live carvings. David Gowman aka Mr. Fire-Man will demonstrate his handcrafted horns made out of living materials. World Food Day workshops include Chef Andrea Potter’s class on preserving food by natural fermentation, and SCHOKOLADE’s Chocolatier Edward Sutter will share his secret to making the perfect truffle.
