Lost Horn Mediterranean Grill Opens in Kelowna

Restaurateur Peter Contos Opens Lost Horn Mediterranean Grill in West Kelowna

Kelowna’s Westside has been rather limited when it comes to dining choices, but that has changed as The Lost Horn Mediterranean Grill just opened on Main Street. The Lost Horn offers a fast-casual approach to dining, focusing on quality, local ingredients wherever possible. Kelowna is a mecca for fresh fruit, produce and vegetables and has become known for artisanal products, offering everything from specialty meats to honey and cheese, and the restaurant is working alongside local farmers to bring your seasonal items at their freshest.

The restaurant’s owner and operator, Peter Contos, is no stranger to the restaurant business. Growing up his father’s restaurant in Edmonton, Peter loved the way people interacted over food, sharing stories while breaking bread. By age twenty-five he owned his first restaurant in Banff, and he eventually moved west to Vancouver to open the well-awarded Ouzeri on West Broadway. The Ouzeri was always bustling, full of regulars, and Peter was always at the center of the room ensuring all were well looked after. My friend Tess that you see so often in our social media worked there, it’s where I met her, and I used to work for Peter across the street, at a restaurant called Magiaria, on Broadway where Olympia Pizza resides now.

Peter Contos moved to Kelowna’s west side to pursue an education in wine and shortly thereafter saw the opportunity to bring a true community-focused restaurant to the area. He’s built a menu with filled with health-conscious quality ingredients with a Mediterranean flare. You’ll find grilled lamb chops, fresh artisan breads, baguette & panini sandwiches, oups, Charcuterie, Nicoise salad, duck confit poutine, traditional Greek gyros, spanakopita, and souvlaki, falafel, empanadas, artisan pizzas & pastas and with plenty of quick meals takeout when time is tight. The menu is customizable, if you want your sandwich, souvlaki, or lamb chops with pomme frites, roasted potatoes, soup or salad, the choice is yours.

The Lost Horn can cater outside the restaurant as well, they’ve got a large outdoor grill & rotisserie for lamb or pig roast for up to 100 people, and a small private room should you wish to host a special evening. Winemakers dinners and collaborations with other artisans, chefs and producers in the area will be frequent, this will be a true neighbourhood place, reflecting local community values.

  1. Marianne Hassel says:

Dinner was nice and flavorful. Biggest problem I had was not being able to reserve a table for two. Told to come before 6:00PM to be guaranteed a table for two. Want to eat later when dining out. Hopefully this gets changed…..summer is busy but it is the locals that see you through the slow times…..many dine out just in twos…..

  2. Ann Deacon says:

Food was good, service a little slow but it was an enjoyable evening.
Wine was expensive especially when we live in wine country.

Thanks for letting us know how your experience went. I guess new restaurants take a while to iron out the kinks.
