Sea lice part of Fraser River sockeye crash? The disastrous crash of most of this year’s Fraser River sockeye salmon run is sending shock waves throughout B.C. communities. Commercial fishermen were left high and dry, First Nations leaders are concerned about a shortage of the food fish so critical to their communities, and the ecosystems that thrive on the influx of nutrients from wild salmon will inevitably suffer.

Finding Coral Update—Now the Real Work Begins After two weeks of adventure-filled research on the Central Coast of B.C., the Finding Coral Expedition (link to FCE site) wrapped up on June 23. The team found their land legs, said their goodbyes, and went their separate ways. The Cape Flattery steamed south to home port in Seattle, and the Nuytco submersible team packed up the subs and moved on to their next project.

Bycatch report analyzes Pacific Groundfish bottom trawl fishery The issue of bycatch in Canada’s Pacific is highlighted in a new Living Oceans Society report. “Bycatch in the Pacific Groundfish Bottom Trawl Fishery” analyzes the unintentional catching and discarding of unwanted species during commercial fishing.

Forging links in Ottawa Living Oceans Society held a week of meetings and workshops in Ottawa in mid September to help bridge the distance between the decision makers and the Pacific coastal communities their policies affect.
