In the spotlight at participating BC Liquor Stores this May
This May, sixty (60) BC Liquor Stores throughout the province will feature German wines with a focus on their food-friendliness with Asian cuisine. Eight wines have been selected from the German offering to showcase ‘Perfect Pairings’, with these wines on display in participating stores. A free booklet has been developed with the help of Jeannie Cho Lee, Asia’s first Master of Wine (MW), for consumers to take home, matching the wines with such foods as Indian curry, Korean stir fry, Chinese barbecue and more.
At the free consumer event on Saturday, May 5, 2012, consumers can try samples of all eight featured German wines paired with Chinese Brasserie fare by local Chinatown restaurant Bao Bei. The event is open to the public at the Cambie and 39th Signature BC Liquor Store between 3 and 6 pm, no purchase required.
The wines of Germany are generally heralded as great food friendly wines. This is a very bold statement, but most sommeliers and other food and wine professionals will agree. British Columbia, being the multi-ethnic province that it is, offers a wide array of cuisines that virtually reach out for German wines. The not-really secret here is German wines’ variety in styles (dry to sweet, sparkling or still), grape varieties (Riesling and Pinot Noir, to name the top ones) distinct levels of richness (light to full, to honey-like) and, as they are based on a cooler climate, the wines generally have a good amount of acidity (considered vital for a great food wine) and lower levels of alcohol than warmer climate peers.
